  • In this work, a new rate control algorithm for transmission of H.264/AVC video bit stream through CBR(constant bit rate) channel is proposed. The proposed algorithm predicts target bit rate and MAD(mean of absolute difference) for current frame considering image complexity variance between neighboring backward and current images. In details, respective linear regression analysis for MAD and encoded bit rate against image complexity variance produce correlation parameters. Additionally, it uses frame skip technique to maintain bit stream within a manageable range and protect buffer from overflow or underflow. Implementation and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can provide accurate bit allocation, and can effectively visual degradation after scene changes. Also our proposed algorithm encodes the video sequences with less frame skipping compared to the existing rate control for H.264/AVC.

  • In order to achieve high coding efficiency, H.264/AVC video coding standard adopts the techniques such as variable block size coding, motion estimation with quarter-pel precision, multiple reference frames, rate-distortion optimization, and etc. However, these coding methods have a defect to greatly increase the complexity for motion estimation. Particularly, from multiple reference frame motion estimation, the computational burden increases in proportion to the number of the searched reference frames. Therefore, we propose the method to reduce the complexity by controlling the number of the searched reference frames in motion estimation. Proposed algorithm uses the optimal reference frame information in both $P16{\times}16$ mode and the adjacent blocks, thus omits unnecessary searching process in the rest of inter modes. Experimental results show the proposed method can save an average of 57.31% of the coding time with negligible quality and bit-rate difference. This method also can be adopted with any of the existing motion estimation algorithm. Therefore, additional performance improvement can be obtained.

  • The M-algorithm for decoding convolutional codes can significantly reduce the complexity of the Viterbi algorithm by tracking a fixed number of survivor paths in each level of the decoding trellis. It is an easily-implementable algorithm suited for real-time processing of high-speed data. The algorithm, however, generates a sequence of catastrophic errors when the correct path is not included in the set of survivor paths. In this paper, the performance of the M-algorithm obtained from using various decoding complexity levels, frame lengths, and code constraint lengths is presented. The performance gain is quantified when the algorithm is used in conjunction with codes of increased constraint length. In particular, it is demonstrated the gain from the increased code free distance overcompensates the loss from the correct path being excluded from the survivors, when the frame length is short to moderate. Using 64 survivor paths, the signal-to-noise ratio gain obtained by increasing the constraint length from K=7 to K=9, 11, 15 is respectively 0.6, 0.75, and 08dB, when the frame of length L=100 has the frame error rate of 0.01%.

  • The H.264/AVC standard developed by the joint Video Team (JVT) provides better coding efficiency than previous standards. The new emerging H.264/AVC employs variable block size motion estimation using multiple reference frame with 1/4-pel MV(Motion Vector) accuracy. These techniques are a important feature to accomplish higher coding efficiency. However, these techniques are increased overall computational complexity. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes advanced fast mode decision suited for variable block size by classifying inter mode based on Rate Distortion Optimization(RDO) technique. Proposed algorithm is going to use to implement H/W structure for fast mode decision. The experimental results shows that the proposed algorithm provides significant reduction computational complexity without any noticeable coding loss and additional computation. Entire computational complexity is decreased about 30%.

  • The first frame of a GOP is encoded in intra mode which generates a larger number of bits. In addition, the first frame is used for the inter mode encoding of the following frames. Thus the encoding results of the intra frame affects the first frame as well as the following frames. Traditionally, the quantization parameter for an intra frame is determined only depending on the bpp not considering the characteristics of the intra frame. For accurate intra frame encoding, we should consider not only bpp but also the complexity of the video sequence and the output bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a real-time quantization model which is used to calculate the quantization parameter for an intra frame encoding based on the investigation on the characteristics of a GOP. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed quantization model captures the characteristics of an intra frame effectively and the proposed method for model parameters accurately estimates the real values.

  • This paper introduces three efficient frame selection schemes to reduce the computation complexity for the multi-reference and variable block size Motion Estimation (ME). The proposed RSP (Reference Selection Pass) scheme can minimize the overhead of frame selection. The MFS (Modified Frame Selection) scheme can reduce the number of search points about 18% compared with existing schemes considering the motion of image during the reference frame selection process. In addition, the TPRFS (Two Pass Reference frame Selection) scheme can minimize the frame selection operation for the variable block size ME in H.264/AVC using the character of selected reference frame according to the block size. The simulation results show the proposed schemes can save up to 50% of the ME computation without degradation of image Qualify. Because the proposed schemes can be separated from the block matching process, they can be used with any existing single reference fast search algorithms.

  • Video Stabilization For Vehicular Applications Is An Important Method Of Removing Unwanted Shaky Motions From Unstable Videos. In This Paper, An Improved Video Stabilization Method With Image Stitching Has Been Proposed. Scale Invariant Feature Transform (Sift) Matching Is Used To Calculate The New Position Of The Points In Next Frame. Image Stitching Is Done In Every Frame To Get Stabilized Frames To Provide Stable Video As Well As A Better Understanding Of The Previous Frame'S Position And Show The Surrounding Objects Together. The Computational Complexity Of Sift (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform) Is Reduced By Reducing The Sift Descriptors Size And Resticting The Number Of Keypints To Be Extracted. Also, A Modified Matching Procedure Is Proposed To Improve The Accuracy Of The Stabilization.

  • Efficient quantization methods of the line spectrum pairs (LSP) which have good performances, low complexity and memory are proposed. The adaptive quantization range method utilizing the ordering property of LSP parameters is used in a scalar quantizer and a vector-scalar hybrid quantizer. As the maximum quantization range of each LSP parameter is varied adaptively on the quantized value of the previous order's LSP parameter, efficient quantization methods can be obtained. The proposed scalar quantization algorithm needs 31 bits/frame, which is 3 bits less per frame than in the conventional scalar quantization method with interframe prediction to maintain the transparent quality of speech. The improved vector-scalar quantizer achieves an average spectral distortion of 1 dB using 26 bits/frame. The performances of proposed quantization methods are also evaluated in the transmission errors.

  • We apply IEEE 802.3 frame burst mode (FBM) to the Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) downstream link and compare its performance with non-frame burst mode for various traffic patterns. Although in light traffic loads (p<0.5) the efficiency of the FBM mechanism is not significant, it does feature high throughput, small jitter, low queue occupancy, and short queuing delay in optical line terminals under various traffic loads with various numbers of optical network units (ONUs). The FBM performance always approaches that of full-duplex mode, especially under heavy traffic loads (p>0.5). Moreover, an increase in number of ONUs will decrease the burst performance. Our work shows that FBM scheme is very useful for EPON transmission and has low design complexity.

  • Productivity improvement is one of the most challenging problem facing the motor industry. This paper deals with the lot sizing and production scheduling problems of the side frame press shop in a domestic truck manufacturing company. The problems can not be solved simultaneously due to the computational complexity. Thus, we present a heuristic method which solves the two problems sequentially with the objective of maximizing the press utilization while maintaining a minimum inventory level. A micro-computer-based software is developed for easy implementation of the heuristic in the shop floor level.
