A study was undertaken on rats in order to clarify the gastric mucosal, morphologic response to oral and subcutaneous administration of acetylsalicylic acid(aspirin). Aspirin was administered orally (oral group) and subcutaneously (subcutaneous group) at does rate of 60 mg per kg of body weight per day to 40 normal rats. On the 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 15th day of administration, in addition to clinical observation, 5 rats each from the both groups were sacrificed and examined macroscopically, histologically and electron-microscopically for the morphological changes of gastric mucosal cells with the following results. Although the clinical, macroscopic and histological changes were not significant, marked ultrastructural changes were observed. Parietal and chief cells were affected most severely by the administration of aspirin ; parietal cells showed increase in the number of SER and intracellular canaliculi, where-as in chief cells fragmentation, luminal dilatation, decrease in the number and structural abnormalities of RER were seen. Relatively mild changes were observed in mucous, mucous neck and basal-granulated cells. Although the degree of changes was milder than those of oral group, the similar changes were also observed in the subcutaneous group. From these results, it would be concluded that aspirin injury of gastric mucosa is effected not only by the direct injury to the mucosa but also indirectly by the blood concentration of aspirin.

Unfertilized oocytes age inevitably after ovulation, which limits their fertilizable life span and embryonic development. Rapamycin affects mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) expression and cytoskeleton reorganization during oocyte meiotic maturation. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of rapamycin treatment on aged porcine oocytes and their in vitro development. Rapamycin treatment of aged oocytes for 24 h (68 h in vitro maturation [IVM]; $44h+10{\mu}M$ rapamycin/24 h, $47.52{\pm}5.68$) or control oocytes (44 h IVM; $42.14{\pm}4.40$) significantly increased the development rate and total cell number compared with untreated aged oocytes (68 h IVM, $22.04{\pm}5.68$) (p<0.05). Rapamycin treatment of aged IVM oocytes for 24 h also rescued aberrant spindle organization and chromosomal misalignment, blocked the decrease in the level of phosphorylated-p44/42 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and increased the mRNA expression of cytoplasmic maturation factor genes (MOS, BMP15, GDF9, and CCNB1) compared with untreated, 24 h-aged IVM oocytes (p<0.05). Furthermore, rapamycin treatment of aged oocytes decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity and DNA fragmentation (p<0.05), and downregulated the mRNA expression of mTOR compared with control or untreated aged oocytes. By contrast, rapamycin treatment of aged oocytes increased mitochondrial localization (p<0.05) and upregulated the mRNA expression of autophagy (BECN1, ATG7, MAP1LC3B, ATG12, GABARAP, and GABARAPL1), anti-apoptosis (BCL2L1 and BIRC5; p<0.05), and development (NANOG and SOX2; p<0.05) genes, but it did not affect the mRNA expression of pro-apoptosis genes (FAS and CASP3) compared with the control. This study demonstrates that rapamycin treatment can rescue the poor developmental capacity of aged porcine oocytes.
We have sequenced a portion of mitochondrial CO! gene (403 bp) of the firefly, Pyrocoelia rufa, to investigate genetic diversity within population, geographic variation, and phylogenetic relationships among haplotypes. A total of seven mtDNA haplotypes ranging in sequence divergence from 0.2% to 1.2% were obtained from 26 fireflies collected at four localities in Korea: Namhae, Pusan, Muju, and Yongin. The samples collected at the urban area, Pusan, were all fixed with one haplotype, differently those collected at the forest and/or agricultural areas. This appears to suggest that habitat fragmentation and population bottleneck caused by urbanization might have been severe in Pusan. On the other hand, from Muju known as the largest habitat and sanctuary for the firefly, four haplotypes with the maximum sequence divergence of 1.0% were obtained, and this estimate was the highest among the areas studied. The fireflies collected at the isolated islet, Namhae, revealed relatively low haplotype diversity(H=0.25), but one haplotype (PR7) was phylogenetically differentiated from others. This phenomenon was explained in terms of biogeographic history of the island and gene flow in the recent past. Grouping of Muju- Y ongin and Pusan-Namhae, respectively, in the hierarchical genetic analysis suggests the presence of historically occurred, biogeographic barrier against gene flow between them.
This paper presents design and operational characteristics of 150 MW pulse power system for high current pulse forming network to control trigger time. The system is composed of two capacitor bank modules. Each capacitor bank module consist of a trigger vacuum switch, 9k 33kJ capacitor, an energy dump circuit, a crowbar circuit and a pulse shaping inductor and is connected in parallel. It is controlled by trigger controller to select operational module and determine triggering time. Pspice simulation was conducted about determining parameters of components such as crowbar circuit, capacitor, pulse forming inductor, trigger vacuum switch and predicting results of experiment circuit. The result of the experiment was in good agreement with the result of the simulation. The various current shapes with 300~650 us pulse width is formed by sequential firing time control of capacitor bank module. The maximum current is about 40 kA during simultaneous triggering of two capacitor bank modules. The developed 150 MW pulse power system can be applied to high current pulse power system such as rock fragmentation power sources, Rail gun, Coil gun, nano-powers, high power microwave.

Background: Cigarette smoking and tobacco chewing are common modes of consuming tobacco all over the world. Parents need to be aware that germ cell integrity is vital for birth of healthy offspring as biological parenting begins much before birth of a child and even before conception. The present study was conducted to determine the etiology of non-familial sporadic heritable retinoblastoma (NFSHRb), by evaluating oxidative sperm DNA damage in fathers due to use of tobacco (smoking and chewing). Materials and Methods: We recruited 145 fathers of NFSHRb children and 53 fathers of healthy children (controls) in the study. Tobacco history was obtained by personal interview. Seminal reactive oxygen species (ROS) in semen, sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and 8 hydroxy 2' deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels in sperm were evaluated. The RB1 gene was screened in genomic blood DNA of parents of children with NFSHRb and controls. Odds ratios (ORs) derived from conditional logistic regression models. Results: There was significant difference in the levels of ROS (p<0.05), DFI (p<0.05) and 8-OHdG (p<0.05) between tobacco users and non-users. The OR of NFSHRb for smokers was 7.29 (95%CI 2.9-34.5, p<0.01), for tobacco chewers 4.75 (2.07-10.9, p<0.05) and for both 9.11 (3.79-39.2; p<0.01). Conclusions: This study emphasizes the adverse effect of tobacco on the paternal genome and how accumulation of oxidative damage in sperm DNA may contribute to the etiology of NFSHRb. In an ongoing parallel study in our laboratory, 11 of fathers who smoked underwent. Meditation and yoga interventions, showed significant decline in levels of highly mutagenic oxidised DNA adducts after 6 months. Thus our lifestyle and social habits impact sperm DNA integrity and simple interventions like yoga and meditation are therapeutic for oxidative damage to sperm DNA.
Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is an uncommon adenocarcinoma which arises from the epithelial cells of the bile ducts. The aim of the study was to investigate the cytotoxicity, toxicity, and anticancer activity of a crude ethanolic extract of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) against CCA. Cytotoxic activity against a CCA cell line (CL-6) was assessed by calcein-AM and Hoechst 33342 assays and anti-oxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH assay. Investigation of apoptotic activity was performed by DNA fragmentation assay and induction of genes that may be involved in the resistance of CCA to anticancer drugs (MDR1, MRP1, MRP2, and MRP3) was examined by real-time PCR. To investigate anti-CCA activity in vivo, a total of 80 OV and nitrosamine (OV/DMN)-induced CCA hamsters were fed with the ginger extract at doses of 1000, 3000, and 5000 mg/kg body weight daily or every alternate day for 30 days. Control groups consisting of 10 hamsters for each group were fed with 5-fluorouracil (positive control) or distilled water (untreated control). Median $IC_{50}$ (concentration that inhibits cell growth by 50%) values for cytotoxicity and anti-oxidant activities of the crude ethanolic extract of ginger were 10.95, 53.15, and $27.86{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. More than ten DNA fragments were visualized and up to 7-9 fold up-regulation of MDR1 and MRP3 genes was observed following exposure to the ethanolic extract of ginger. Acute and subacute toxicity tests indicated absence of any significant toxicity at the maximum dose of 5,000 mg/kg body weight given by intragastric gavage. The survival time and survival rate of the CCA-bearing hamsters were significantly prolonged compared to the control group (median of 54 vs 17 weeks). Results from these in vitro and in vivo studies thus indicate promising anticancer activity of the crude ethanolic extract of ginger against CCA with the absence of any significant toxicity. Moreover, MDR1 and MRP3 may be involved in conferring resistance of CCA to the ginger extract.

Governmental authorities have been trying to develop our city in respect to the growth of economy and it is true that their developmental policies have negative effects on ecosystem without doubt. To estimate these negative effects, this study is mainly focused on analysing the usage of the land according to the urban growth, and the temporal and spatial patterns between the elements which consist of the landscape of Daegu Metropolitan Sphere, by using the GIS method and the landscape indices. The results of the this study are as follow; the urban areas widened for $193.4km^2$ due to the shift of the urban function, and the forest areas were encroached for $455.6km^2$ into other landcover patterns. It was the shift of the agriculture areas that are given the most influence in those procedures since those developmental conditions are relatively satisfactory. Moreover the forest areas are structurally fragmented into the complicated form, and also the patterns of adjacent patches are become complex. These transitions are regarded as causes of increased external interventions to the forest areas, and these could possibly deteriorate the soundness of forest areas by reducing the core areas which are habitats of species. In conclusion, the results of this study evaluate the influence of much broader urban development on environment structure around urban and mutual relationship between them. In addition, it can provide methods and basic informations for the establishment of metropolitan urban plan after due considerations of the landscape ecological principle.

The purpose of this study is to test the applicability of landscape metrics for quantifying and monitoring the landscape structure in the Geumho River watershed, which has undergone heavy environmental disturbances. Landscape metrics were computed from land cover maps(1985, 1999) for the forest patches. The number of variables were reduced from 12 metrics to 3 factors through factor analysis. These factors accounted for above 91% of the variation in the original metrics. We also determined the relative effects of land development on the changes of forest landscape structure using multiple linear regression analysis. At the forest patches, the conversion of forest to urban areas and agriculture resulted in increased fragmentation. Patch area and patch size decreased. and patch density increased as a result of the conversion of forest to agriculture($R^2=0.696$, p<0.01). The heterogeneity of patch size and complexity of patch shape mainly decreased as a result of the conversion of forest to urban areas($R^2=0.405$, p<0.01). The density of core area and edge showed the tendency increase, but there was no relationship with the conversion of forest to urban area and agriculture The future research will be needed to analyze correlations between landscape structures and specific environmental and socioeconomic landscape functions.
Mountain and hill areas occupy by more than 70% in South Korea and Rock drilling should be applied in order to reduce noisy & vibration from massive civil engineering business such as road expansion, high-way construction, subway construction and construction of site renovation such as a newly-built & re-development of apartment, newly-built of high-rising building in downtown area. As Blasting noise & vibration such as vibration, noise, fly rock etc caused by blasting operation from large small scale construction occurs, neighboring residents who demand the compensation file a civil complaint so that the business reach a deadlock. As the excavation method for these areas, There are blasting of micro-vibration, mechanical excavation method(Rock splitter, Breaker etc), similar blasting method(plasma, gel fragmentation etc) to date. In this study, we are trying to find the feature & performance which get improved economic feasibility & construct ability through improving sympathetic detonation of New KINECKER-I used in blasting of micro-vibration & formulation and would provide convenience for use by introducing standard blasting pattern & construction method. Also, checked and confirmed all the blasting with connecting cap has been cleary detonated.
To overcome the stream fragmentation and blockage of migration of fishes by dams and weirs, fishways are commonly installed. However, limited studies were conducted for effectiveness and suitability of fishways installed in Korean streams. In this study, we investigated fish usages (by time periods, locations and months) of the Ice Harbor type fishway installed in the Gongju weir using traps. The monitoring were monthly conducted from June to October, 2012. The number of individuals which used fishway in September and October decreased than in June to August. Although no statistical significance was identified, many numbers of species and individuals were occurred at the trap installed at the left end of fishway than others. Fishes of more diverse size classes occurred at this trap as well. The number of collected individuals and water level of weir were positively correlated though they showed low correlation coefficient. Conversely, occurrence rate of fishes smaller than 70 mm of total length decreased with increasing water level of weir. fishway usage time of fish were different depends on ecological characteristics of each species. Various sizes of fishes can use fishway for their upstream migration. These results are useful for establishing management and evaluation plans of Ice Harbor type fishway in S. Korea.
