In order to find an optimal friction-welding condition for Ni-base ODS alloy (MA 754) produced by mechanical alloying, joint experiments were performed with various conditions of friction pressures (50~500 MPa), friction times (1~5 sec) and upset pressures (50~600 MPa). The optimal friction pressure and upset pressure must be above 400 MPa and 500 MPa, respectively, which are determined by tensile strengths and fracture features of as-welded joints. A maximum stress설h of 975 MPa could be obtained under these pressure conditions at friction time of 2 sec. Microstructural features of bonded interface by optical microscope and SEM revealed that the interface regions of all specimens are consisted with three distinct regions and defects such as voids, cracks and wavy interfaces exist in the joints produced under not-optimized conditions. EDS results showed that these defects include oxides composed with elements of Al, Y and Ti. The hardness on the bonded interface was higher than in the base metal region. Specimens fractured in bonded interface region had lower strength values compared to those fractured in base metal region. Surfaces of the former showed a typical intergranular fracture.
Purpose: To examine the shear bond strengths of zirconia and veneering ceramic according to their surface processing. Methods: The test samples were divided into three groups: one without zirconia surface processing, one sandblasted, and one sandblasted then 3% etched. Then veneering ceramic was fired on all test samples, and their shear bond strengths were measured. Results: The test samples of the control group (Z1) showed the lowest shear bond strengths of $21.82{\pm}1.02$ MPa. The shear bond strengths of Z2 and Z3 ($28.25{\pm}0.72$ and $26.23{\pm}0.82$ MPa, respectively) were relatively higher than those of the control group. The fracture surface of the control group showed adhesive fractures while the test groups had relatively large numbers of cohesive fractures. Conclusion: The shear bond strength was high in the test groups with surface processing while the fracture surfaces showed compound fractures of adhesive and cohesive fractures.

This is a study for the improvement of the fractured lug structure that connects the landing gear to the fuselage of the aircraft using the composite leaf spring landing gear. The lug surface was analyzed to find out the cause of fracture. The lug was destroyed by the crack initiation and propagation under the repeated stresses. The frictional wears of the lug structure were proceeded and that affected adversely to the crack. Also, the square protrusion of the lug has a weak shape to bring about stress concentration. The design changes were conducted and the test was performed to verify changed design results.
Copper-based leadframe sheets were immersed in two kinds of hot alkaline solutions to form brown-oxide or black-oxide layer on the surface. The oxide-coated leadframe sheets were molded with epoxy molding compound (EMC). After post mold curing, the oxide-coated EMC-leadframe joints were machined to form sandwiched double-cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens. The SDCB specimens were used to measure the fracture toughness of the EMC/leadframe interfaces under quasi-Mode I loading conditions. Fracture surfaces were analyzed by various equipment to investigate failure path. The present paper deals with the failure path, and the cause of the failure path formation with an adhesion model will be treated in the succeeding paper.
This paper presents a study of the tensile behavior of carbon and glass fiber reinforced epoxy hybrid laminates manufactured by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). The objective of this study was to develop and characterize carbon fiber reinforced plastic hybrid composite material that is low cost and light-weight and that possesses adequate strength and stiffness. The effect of position and content of the glass fabric layer on the tensile properties of the hybrid laminates was examined. The strength and stiffness of the hybrid laminates showed a steady decrease with an increase of the glass fabric content this decrease was almost linear. Fracture strain of these laminates showed a slight increasing trend when glass fabric content was increased up to 3 layers, but at a glass fabric content > 3 layers the strain was almost constant. When glass fabric layers were at both outer surfaces, the hybrid laminate exhibited a slightly higher tensile strength and elastic modulus due to the small amount of glass yarn pull-out.

The bond-based peridynamic model is able to capture many of the essential characteristics of dynamic brittle fracture observed in experiments: crack branching, crack-path instability, asymmetries of crack paths, successive branching, secondary cracking at right angles from existing crack surfaces, etc. In this paper we investigate the influence of the stress waves on the crack branching angle and the velocity profile. We observe that crack branching in peridynamics evolves as the phenomenology proposed by the experimental evidence: when a crack reaches a critical stage(macroscopically identified by its stress intensity factor) it splits into two or more branches, each propagating with the same speed as the parent crack, but with a much reduced process zone.

Drop weight impact tests were performed to investigate the impact behavior of carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates reinforced by short fibers and other interleaving materials. Characterization techniques, such as cross-sectional fractography and scanning acoustic microscopy, were employed quantitatively to assess the internal damage of some composite laminates. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe impact damage and fracture modes on specimen fracture surfaces. The results show that composite laminates experience various types of fracture; delamination, intra-ply cracking, matrix cracking and fiber breakage depending on the interlayer materials. Among the composite laminates tested in this study, the composites reinforced by Zylon fibers showed very good impact damage resistance with medium level of damage, while the composites interleaved by poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEEA) film is expected to deteriorate the bulk strength due to the reduction of fiber volume fraction, even though the damaged area is significantly reduced.
In this paper, creep tests of Mg-Zn-Mn and Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloy casted by mold under the temperature range of 473.00-573.00K, and the stress range of 23.42-87.00Mpa were done with the equipment of automatic controlled temperature and computer for data acquisition. The activation energies were obtained by relationship between creep rate and temperature, and the stress exponents were obtained by relationship between creep rate and stress. From the experiment results, the activation energies of Mg-Zn-Mn and Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloy were 149.87kJ/mol, 147.97kJ/mol, respectively, and the stress exponents of those alloy were 5.13, 5.59, respectively, under the temperature of 473.00-493.00K and the stress range of 62.43-78.00Mpa. And the activation energies of those alloy were 134.41kJ/mol, 129.22kJ/mol, respectively, and the stress exponent of those alloy were 3.48, 3.77, respectively, under the temperature of 553-573Mpa and the stress range of 23.42-39.00Mpa. Also the lifes of Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloy were higher than those of Mg-Zn-Mn alloy, and the results of SEM showed fracture surfaces under low temperature had smaller dimples than those under high temperature.
In an effort to understand the hydrolytic degradation process of cured urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins responsible for the formaldehyde emission of wood-based composite panels, this study analyzed the influence of acid hydrolysis on the morphology of cured UF resins with different formaldehyde/urea (F/U) mole ratios such as 1.6, 1.4, 1.2 and 1.0. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was employed to observe both exterior and fracture surfaces on thin films of cured UF resins before and after the etching with hydrochloric acid as a simulation of the hydrolytic degradation process. FE-SEM images showed that the exterior surface of cured UF resin with the F/U mole ratio of 1.0 had spherical structures after the acid hydrolysis while the other cured UF resins were not the case. However, the fracture surface observation showed that all the samples possessed spherical structures in the cured state of UF resins although their occurrence and size decreased as the F/U mole ratio increased. For the first time, we found the spherical structures in cured UF resins of higher F/U mole ratio of 1.4. After the acid hydrolysis, the spherical structures became a much predominant at the fracture surface. These results indicated that the spherical structures in cured UF resinswere much more resistant to the hydrolytic degradation by the acid than amorphous region.
In order to investigate the mechanical behavior of newly developed materials, the evaluation of mechanical properties using small-size specimen is essential. For those purposes, an instrumented impact testing apparatus, which provides the load-displacement curve under impact loading without oscillations, was devised. To develop the test procedure with the setup, the impact behaviors of various kinds of structural materials such as S45C, SCM4, Ti alloys (Ti-6V-4Al) and Zr-based bulk amorphous metal, were investigated through the instrumented Charpy V-notch impact tests. The calibrations of the dynamic load and displacement that was calculated based on the Newton' second law were carried out through the quasi-static load test and the comparison of a directly measured value using a laser displacement meter. Satisfactory results could be obtained. The crack initiation and propagation processes during impact fracture could be well divided on the curve, depending on the intrinsic characteristic of specimen tested; ductile or brittle. The absorbed impact energy in Zr-basd BAM was largely used for crack initiation not for crack propagation process. The fracture surfaces under impact loading showed different feature when compared with the static cases.
