X-ray diffraction observation of fracture surfaces yields useful information to analyze the causes of failure accidents of engineering structures. This experimental technique, named X-ray fractography, has been developed especially in metal and mechanical engineering fields. The distributions of the residual stress and the half value breadth of diffraction profiles beneath the fatigue fracture surface were measured with SNCM 439, HT100 and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The size of the maximum plastic zone was successfully determined on the basis of the measured distributions. This size was correlated to maximum stress intensity factor. The distributions of the half value breadth of diffraction profiles on the fatigue fracture surfaces were measured with SNCM 439. HT100. The equations of x-ray parameter distribution were possible to estimated fracture parameters of fatigue fracture surfaces.

Structural integrity assessment of piping components is of paramount important for remaining life prediction, residual strength evaluation and for in-service inspection planning. For accurate prediction of these, a reliable fracture parameter is essential. One of the fracture parameters is stress intensity factor (SIF), which is generally preferred for high strength materials, can be evaluated by using linear elastic fracture mechanics principles. To employ available analytical and numerical procedures for fracture analysis of piping components, it takes considerable amount of time and effort. In view of this, an alternative approach to analytical and finite element analysis, a model based on relevance vector machine (RVM) is developed to predict SIF of part through crack of a piping component under fatigue loading. RVM is based on probabilistic approach and regression and it is established based on Bayesian formulation of a linear model with an appropriate prior that results in a sparse representation. Model for SIF prediction is developed by using MATLAB software wherein 70% of the data has been used for the development of RVM model and rest of the data is used for validation. The predicted SIF is found to be in good agreement with the corresponding analytical solution, and can be used for damage tolerant analysis of structural components.
The enamel, the upper layer of a tooth has remarkable capability of bearing severe loading on the tooth. The fracture behavior is important to understand the mechanism of load bearing and it could be very useful for developing new materials. Non-destructive evaluation of such materials will also benefit from this knowledge. The graded microstructures of enamel were modeled by finite element analysis software and the J-integrals and the stress intensity factors were evaluated as the fracture parameters. The results show that these parameters are location dependent. Those values increase when measured in the direction of dentine enamel junction. This finding matched well with experiments and implies many useful understanding of biomaterials and applications to new materials.
Recently, attempts have been made to be join ceramics to metals in order to make up for the brittleness of ceramics. The difference in the coefficients of linear expansion of the two materials joined at high temperature will cause residual stress, which has a strong influence on the strength of the bonded joints. In this paper, the residual stress distribution and stress intensity factors of the ceramic/metal bonded joints were analyzed by 2-dimensional elastic boundary element method. Fracture toughness tests of ceramic/metal bonded joints with an interface crack were carried out. So the advanced method of quantitative strength evaluation for ceramic/metal bonded joints is to be suggested. Fracture surface and crack propagation path were observed using scanning electron microscope.
Data which gathered and used in the field of fatigue and fracture mechanics have a lot of uncertainties. In this case, those uncertainties will make scatter band in evaluation of fatigue life and fracture toughness. Thus, the probabilistic analysis of these data will be needed. For determining the fatigue life in mixed mode, using crack direction law and fatigue crack growth law, the problem is studied as a constrained life minimization. Stress intensity factor(SIF) is computed by approximate solution table(Ewalds/Wanhill 1984) and 0th order PFEM. The variance of fatigue life and SIF are computed by differentiation of tabulated approximate solution and 1st order PFEM. And these are used for criterion of design values, principal parameter determination and modelling. The problem of center cracked plate is solved for checking the PFEM model which is influenced by various parameters like as initial crack length, final crack length, two fatigue parameters in Paris Equation and applied stress.
An analysis method for rubber toughened PVC is suggested to evaluate critical dynamic strain energy release rates($G_c$) from the Charpy impact energy measurements. An instrumented Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture parameters in addition to total fracture energies and maximum critical loads. The dynamic stress intensity factor $K_{Id}$ was computed for varying amounts of rubber contents from the obtained maximum critical loads and also toughening effects were investigated as well. The fracture surfaces produced under low velocity impact fur PVC/MBS composites were investigated by SEM. The results show that MBS rubber is very effective reinforcement material for toughening PVC.C.
The tincture toughness is evaluated by using U(compact tension) and 3PB(three point bending) specimens of AI alloys far propulsive engine. To evaluate the static fracture toughness, strain gage method is used. The static fracture toughness obtained from the strain measurement is compared with the results by ASTM standard and FEM analysis. For the reliable evaluation of fracture toughness, strain gages are attached at various positions.
Analysis on failure of the panel glass under mechanical shock is the main topic of this study. Since the glass for the LCD panel is thin, it needs to be designed to have enough toughness against mechanical shock. In this paper, a process of estimating fracture of the panel glass is proposed to guarantee reliability of the product. The fracture toughness of the panel glass is used as a criterion of the fracture based on an experimental approach. The stress intensity factor was calculated considering a model with the largest initial crack size on a cut surface and with the boundary force obtained from a dynamic finite element analysis. Critical surface roughness on the cut surface of a typical glass panel, to prevent fracture in case of bending mode, is obtained.
An analysis program for the evaluation of pressure vessel integrity under pressurized thermal shock (PTS) is developed. For given material properties and transient history such as temperature and pressure, the stress distribution is calculated and then stress intensity factors are obtained for a wide range of crack sizes. The stress intensity factors are compared with the fracture toughness to check if cracking is expected to occur during the transient. Using this program a round robin problem of PTS during a small break loss of coolant transient has been analyzed as a part of the international comparative assessment study. The allowable maximum reference nil-ductility transition temperatures are determined for various crack sizes.
A new finite element technology based on p-version of F.E.M. is discussed with reference to its potential for application to stress intensity factor computations. In linear elastic fracture mechanics, especially cracked cylindrical shells. It is shown that the p-version nutlet is far better suited for computing the stress intensity factors than the conventional h-version models with the help of three test problems. The main advantage of this technology is that the accuracy of approximation can be established without mesh refinement or the use of special procedures.
