Swirl and tumble flows in an engine in-cylinder have been simulated by using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code, and the results are validated in comparison with experimental data. The large eddy simulation based on the Smagorinsky model and the fractional step method is adopted to describe the turbulence of in-cylinder flows and to save computing time, respectively. The main purpose of this study is connected with the effect of various conditions of intake flows on formation and development of in-cylinder tumble and swirl motions. The engine speeds considered are 1000 rpm and 3000 rpm for intake flows with inclination angles between $-10^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$ at deflection angles of $0^{\circ}$, $22.5^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$. The results are discussed by visualizing flow fields and by evaluating parameters in relation to vortex intensity such as swirl and tumble ratios.
Direct numerical simulations are peformed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow suddenly subjected to spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces in the near-wall region. The Reynolds number based on the inlet momentum thickness and free-stream velocity is $Re_\theta=300$. A fully-implicit fractional step method is employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses are obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin-friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electro-magnetic forces. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques are used to observe the response of streamwise vortices to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are clearly affected by spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces.
A fundamental understanding of the flow around the wind turbine is important to investigate the performance of new type of wind turbine. This study presents the simulation of three dimensional flow fields around the Darius wind turbine as an example. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are used for this simulation. The rotating coordinate system that rotates in the same speed of the turbine is used in order to simplify the boundary condition on the blades. Additionally, the boundary fitted coordinate system is employed in order to express the shape of the blades precisely. Fractional step method is used to solve the basic equations. Third order upwind scheme is chosen for the approximation of the non-linear terms since it can compute the flow field stably even at high Reynolds number without any turbulence models. The flow fields obtained in this study are highly complex due to the three dimensionality and are visualized effectively by using the technique of the computer graphics.

Complex flow field around the Darius turbine rotating stationally are simulated by solving the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation numerically. The rotating coordinate system is employed so that the boundary conditions on the blades of the rotor become simple. In order to impose the boundary condition on the blades precisely, the boundary fitted coordinate system is employed. Fractional step method is used to solve the basic equations. The complex flow fields due to the three dimensionality of the geometry of the turbine and the rotation of the turbine are obtained and they are visualized effectively by using the technique of the computer graphics.
The quality of chaotic mixing in three-dimensional micro channel flow has been numerically studied using Fractional-step method (FSM) and particle tracking techniques such as $Poincar{\acute{e}}$ section and Lyapunov exponents. The flow was driven by pressure distribution and the chaotic mixing was generated by applying alternating current to electrodes embedded on the bottom wall at a first half period and on the top wall at a second half period. The equations governing the velocity and concentration distributions were solved using FSM based on Finite Volume approach. Results showed that the mixing quality depended significantly on the modulation period. The modulation period for the best mixing performance was determined based on the mixing index for various initial conditions of concentration distribution. The optimal values of modulation period obtained by the particle tracking techniques were compared with those from the solution of concentration distribution equation using FSM and CFX software and the comparison showed their good match.
Turbulent flow in a channel with a square rib periodically mounted on one wall is studied by large-eddy simulation(LES). An efficient 3D Navier-Stokes solver has been written for this geometry using a fractional step method and a multi-grid technique. The Reynolds number considered is 82, 000 based on the mean velocity above the obstacle height. Near-wall turbulence is approximated by a wall-layer model based on the turbulence intensity at the grid point nearest a solid wall. The results show a good qualitative agreement with experiments currently available for a single rib, indicating that LES can be a useful tool in simulating complex turbulent flows.
In this paper, the problem of transonic aerodynamic characteristics of a NACA0012 airfoil is numerically investigated in the inviscid gas-droplet two-phase flow with the compressible two-fluid model. In the present study, the airfoil flight in the cloud is simulated by taking account of the viscous drag of the droplets, the heat transfer, the phase change, and the droplet fragmentation The two-fluid equation system is solved by the fractional-step method and the WAF-HIL scheme. The effects of size and volume fraction of the droplets on the flow characteristics of the airfoil in the cloud are elaborated and discussed.
A large eddy simulation with an explicit filter on unstructured mesh is presented. The flow filed is semi-implicitly marched by a fractional step method. Spatial discretization of the solver is designed to guarantee the second order accuracy. An isotropic explicit filter is adopted for measuring the level of subgrid scale velocity fluctuation. The filter is linearity-preserving and has second order commutation error. The developed subgrid scale model is basically eddy viscosity model which depends on the explicitly filtered fields and needs no additional ad hoc wall treatment, such as van Driest damping function. For the validation, the flows in a channel and a pipe are calculated and compared to experimental data and numerical results in the literature.
Direct numerical simulations were performed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow subjected to spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces in the near wall region. A fully implicit fractional step method was employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses were obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electromagnetic forces. The decrease in production is responsible fur the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques were used to observe the response of streamwise vortices and streak structures to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are affected by spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces. Following the stopping of the electromagnetic force, the flow eventually relaxes back to a two-dimensional equilibrium boundary layer.

This paper is comparing numerical schemes for a differential equation with convection and fourth-order diffusion. Our model equation is $h_t+(h^2-h^3)_x=-(h^3h_{xxx})_x$, which arises in the context of thin film flow driven the competing effects of an induced surface tension gradient and gravity. These films arise in thin coating flows and are of great technical and scientific interest. Here we focus on the several numerical methods to apply the model equation and the comparison and analysis of the numerical results. The convection terms are treated with well known WENO methods and the diffusion term is treated implicitly. The diffusion and convection schemes are combined using a fractional step-splitting method.
