  • In this paper the effect of moving mass on dynamic behavior of cracked cantilever beam on elastic foundations is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's equation. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. That is, the crack is modelled as a rotational spring. This flexibility matrix defines the relationship between the displacements and forces across the crack section and is derived by applying fundamental fracture mechanics theory. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture. As the depth of the crack is increased, the tip displacement of the cantilever beam is increased. When the crack depth is constant the frequency of a cracked beam is proportional to the spring stiffness.

  • The free vibration characteristics of fluid-filled cylindrical shells on partial elastic foundations are investigated by an analytical method. The cylindrical shell is fully or partially surrounded by the elastic foundations, these are represented by the Winkler or Pasternak model. The motion of shell is represented by the first order shear deformation theory to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains. The steady flow of fluid is described by the classical potential flow theory. The fluid-structure interaction is considered in the analysis. The effect of internal fluid can be considered by imposing a relation between the fluid pressure and the radial displacement of the structure at the interface. To validate the present method, the numerical example is presented and compared with the available existing results.

  • The 3D numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the settlement behavior of flexible mat foundations subjected to vertical loads. Special attention is given to the improved analytical method (YS-MAT) that reflects the mat flexibility and soil spring coupling effect. The soil model captures the stiffness of the soil springs as well as the shear interaction between the soil springs. The proposed method has been validated by comparing the results with other numerical approaches and field measurements on mat foundation. Through comparative studies, the proposed analytical method was in relatively good agreement with them and capable of predicting the behavior of the mat foundations.

  • A thermal postbuckling analysis is presented for a moderately thick rectangular plate subjected to uniform or nonuniform tent-like temperature loading and resting on an elastic foundation. The plate is assumed to be simply supported on its two opposite edges and the two side edges remain free. The initial geometrical imperfection of the plate is taken into account. The formulation are based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory considering the first order shear deformation effect, and including plate-foundation interaction and thermal effects. The analysis uses a mixed Galerkin-perturbation technique to determine the thermal buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples are presented that relate to the performances of perfect and imperfect, moderately thick plates resting on Pasternak-type or softening nonlinear elastic foundations from which results for Winker elastic foundations follow as a limiting case. Typical results are presented in dimensionless graphical form.

  • Pile foundations have been used for upholding superstructure's loads. The researches on pile foundations subjected to compressive forces or horizontal loads have been actively carried out. However, recently, pile foundations, which are subjected to pull-out forces, are getting increased. The study on the pull-out resistance of piles becomes to be important. In addition, it is expected that belled piles will be used more and more, since the belled piles are effective to resist the pull-out forces. But there is still a lack of research on pull-out resistance of belled piles. Therefore, in order to investigate the resisting effect against pull-out of belled piles which is embedded in cohesionless soil. a series of pull-out test is performed on belled piles in field. Especially, the relation between load and displacement is analyzed through the pull-out test.

  • Pile foundations have been widely used in civil engineering construction for many years. Structures subjected to large lateral loads usually have pile foundations as shallow foundations cannot sometimes support the moments on these structure. The purpose of this paper is to propose the p - multiplier factor (P$\sub$M/) based on the characteristics of behavior of laterally loaded group pile in homogeneous sand. For this, a series of model tests are performed and the composite analytical method proposed by author is used to the propose P$\sub$M/. Based on the model test results of the large number of laterally loaded group piles, p - multiplier factors for homogeneous sand are proposed by back analysis under various condition of soil density, spacing-to-diameter ratio of pile, number of pile, and spacing-to-diameter of pile. P - multiplier approach provides a simple but sufficient tool for characterizing the shadowing group effects of laterally loaded group pile.

  • The paper discussed the effect of a tip mass on the stability of pipes on elastic foundations. Governing equations of motion are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and the numerical scheme using finite element method is applied to obtain the discretized equations. With or without internal damping, the critical flow velocities of the pipes are investigated according to the variation of elastic foundation parameters and tip mass ratios. Also. the relationship between the eigenvalue branches and the corresponding flutter modes of the cantilevered pipes with a tip mass on the elastic foundations is fully investigated.

  • A dynamic interaction analysis of an adjacent surface fecundation on a layered half-space is performed in the frequency domain. A semi-analytical approach is employed to reduce the integration range of the wavenumber in the surface fundamental solution for a layered half-space in boundary element (BE) formulations. The present study then adopts a combined boundary and finite element method to analyze the dynamic behavior of a system of flexible surface foundations on an elastic homogeneous and layered half-space. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the developed method. The examples show the feasibility of an extended application fur the complicated dynamic interaction of foundations on layered media.

  • The soil-structure interactions are caused by the point sources of explosions, deriving piles, compaction of foundations and excavations those are frequently arose in the construction sites. Thus the analysis of soil-structure interactions is one of the most important subjects in the fields of dynamic analysis and vibration control. From this viewpoint, the aim of this study is to collect the basic data for designing foundation structures throughout understanding the dynamic structural behavior, which is embodied by the dynamic analysis of soil-structure systems. In this study, the dynamic analyses of stiffened thick plates subjected to in-plane stress on elastic foundations are carried out. The foundation is modeled as Pasternak foundation that includes the continuity effect of foundations. Also both the Mindlin plate theory and Timoshenko beam-column theory are used for analyzing the thick plates and beams, respectively.
