  • In this study, the three dimensional pile-soil dynamic interaction analysis of the railway bridge pile foundation was performed using SASSI 2000 program and the applicability of SASSI 2000 about an evaluation of the seismic stability of a pile foundation was examined. The numerical analysis was executed on the two site of actual construction and input properties such as the acceleration of bedrock were estimated by one dimensional seismic response analysis using the Pro-SHAKE. Consequently, all the piles of the subject of investigation showed that displacement occurred within a permitted limit and the shear force and moment largely occurred at the point where the soil stiffness varied rapidly.

  • In this study, vibration analysis of a concrete foundation-reinforced by $SiO_2$ nanoparticles resting on soil bed is investigated. The soil medium is simulated with spring constants. Furthermore, the Mori-Tanaka low is used for obtaining the material properties of nano-composite structure and considering agglomeration effects. Using third order shear deformation theory or Reddy theory, the total potential energy of system is calculated and by means of the Hamilton's principle, the coupled motion equations are obtained. Also, based an analytical method, the frequency of system is calculated. The effects of volume percent and agglomeration of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles, soil medium and geometrical parameters of structure are shown on the frequency of system. Results show that with increasing the volume percent of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles, the frequency of structure is increased.

  • This paper presents the measuring process of dynamic properties of offshore wind power foundation and provides consideration of each step. This Guideline enables to maintain consistent measuring procedure and therefore increase the reliability of test results. Small scaled suction bucket foundation was fabricated to represent the commercial support structure installation mechanism and two cases(free-free, free-fixed) of dynamic tests were performed at workshop. From the tests, the importance of dynamic properties of connection part between suction bucket and tower was figured out. More over, types and configuration of measuring devices are recommended which can help find the natural frequency of wind turbine foundation correctly. In field test, it was found that the natural frequency of suction bucket foundation was increased linearly with the penetration depth due to the confining effect of ambient soil. Meanwhile, it was not easy to get an enough excitation force with normal impact hammer because the N.F of suction bucket model was in the lower range of 0 Hz ~ 5 Hz. Therefore, new excitation method which has enough force and can excite lower frequency range was devised. This study will help develop safety check procedure of suction bucket foundation in field at each installation stage using the N.F measurement.

  • This paper presents an application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in settlement prediction of a foundation on sandy soil. In order to train the ANN model, a wide experimental database about settlement of foundations acquired from available literatures was collected. The data used in the ANNs model were arranged using the following five-input parameters that covered both geometrical foundation and sandy soil properties: breadth of foundation B, length to width L/B, embedment ratio Df/B, foundation net applied pressure qnet, and average SPT blow count N. The backpropagation algorithm was implemented to develop an explicit predicting formulation. The settlement results are compared with the results of previous studies. The accuracy of the proposed formula proves that the ANNs method has a huge potential for predicting the settlement of foundations on sandy soils.

  • The movement of soil along a slope during rainfall can cause serious economic damage and can jeopardize human life. Accordingly, predicting slope stability during rainfall is a major issue in geotechnical engineering. Due to rainwater penetrating the soil, the negative pore water pressure will decrease, in turn causing a loss of shear strength in the soil and ultimately slope failure. More seriously, many constructions such as houses and transmission towers built in/on slopes are at risk when the slopes fail. In this study, the numerical simulation using 2D finite difference program, which can solve a fully coupled hydromechanical problems, was used to evaluate the effects of soil properties, rainfall conditions, and the location of a foundation on the slope instability and slope failure mechanisms during rainfall. A slope with a transmission tower located in Namyangju, South Korea was analyzed in this study. The results showed that the correlation between permeability and rainfall intensity had an important role in changing the pore water pressure via controlling the infiltrated rainwater. The foundation of the transmission tower was stable during rainfall because the slope failure was estimated to occur at the toe of the slope, and did not go through the foundation.

  • The long-term performance of plates resting on viscoelastic foundations is a major concern in the analysis of soil-structure interaction. As a powerful mathematical tool, fractional calculus may address these plate-on-foundation problems. In this paper, a fractionalized Zener model is proposed to study the time-dependent behavior of a uniformly loaded rectangular thin foundation plate. By use of the viscoelastic-elastic correspondence principle and the Laplace transforms, the analytical solutions were obtained in terms of the Mittag-Leffler function. Through the analysis of a numerical example, the calculated plate deflection, bending moment and foundation reaction were compared to those from ideal elastic and standard viscoelastic models. It is found that the upper and lower bound solutions of the plate response estimated by the proposed model can be determined using the elastic model. Based on a parametric study, the impacts of model parameters on the long-term performance of a foundation plate were systematically investigated. The results show that the two spring stiffnesses govern the upper and lower bound solutions of the plate response. By varying the values of the fractional differential order and the coefficient of viscosity, the time-dependent behavior of a foundation plate can be accurately captured. The fractional differential order seems to be dependent on the mechanical properties of the ground soil. A sandy foundation will have a small fractional differential order while in order to simulate the creeping of clay foundation, a larger fractional differential order value is needed. The fractionalized Zener model is capable of accounting for the primary and secondary consolidation processes of the foundation soil and can be used to predict the plate performance over many decades of time.

  • In this research, vibration and smart control analysis of a concrete foundation reinforced by $SiO_2$ nanoparticles and covered by piezoelectric layer on soil medium is investigated. The soil medium is simulated with spring constants and the Mori-Tanaka low is used for obtaining the material properties of nano-composite structure and considering agglomeration effects. With considering first order shear deformation theory, the total potential energy of system is calculated and by means of Hamilton's principle in three displacement directions and electric potential, the six coupled equilibrium equations are obtained. Also, based an analytical method, the frequency of system is calculated. The effects of applied voltage, volume percent and agglomeration of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles, soil medium and geometrical parameters of structure are shown on the frequency of system. Results show that with applying negative voltage, the frequency of structure is increased.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the vertical stress properties in sandy soil according to changes of foundation condition in soil bin compacted three layers. The following conclusions and comparisons have been made based on careful analysis from theoretical and experimental methods. : When sandy soil subjected to circular uniform load, the vertical stress increments ($\Delta\sigma_z$) was increased as load increasing, the maximum values of $\Delta\sigma_z$ was achieved at the point loading axis, and $\Delta\sigma_z$ was not shown over at a distance of three times of loading plate width (B). The vertical stress increments were achieved largely at 80 % relative compaction (Rc) compared to 95 % relative compaction due to stress concentration in sandy soil. When sandy soil subjected to circular uniform load, the $\Delta\sigma_z$ differences between theoretical and experimental values as load increased were more increased and its maximum differences were achieved at stress axis. When gravel surface macadamized over sandy soil subjected to load, the $\Delta\sigma_z$ was concentrated to load axis as load increasing, so that macadamization will be decreased load transmission.
