The squeeze casting of a Mg-5wt%Al-0.6wt%Zr alloy was carried out to investigate the conditions for the formation and the prevention of macrodefects, such as macrosegregation and shrinkage defects. The effects of the process parameters, the applied pressure, the die temperature, and the pouring temperature on the formation of macrodefcts were investigated in correlation with the evolution of macrostructure. Three types of macrodefects were found; macrosegregation only, shrinkage defects only, both macrosegregation and shrinkage defects. It was found that the pouring temperature, the die temperature, and the applied pressure are closely related to the formation of macrodefects. Sound castings without macrosegregation and shrinkage defects can be obtained under the conditions of 80 MPa
$730^{\circ}C$$760^{\circ}C$, and $180^{\circ}C$<$T_D$<$250^{\circ}C$.
To investigate the effect of deformation condition on microstructure and texture formation behaviors of AZ91 magnesium alloy with three kinds of initial texure during high-temperature deformation, plane strain compression tests were carried out at high-temperature deformation conditions - temperature of 673 K~723 K, strain rate of 5 × 10-3s-1, up to a strain of -1.0. To clarify the texture formation behavior and crystal orientaion distribution, X-ray diffraction and EBSD measurement were conducted on mid-plane section of the specimens after electroltytic polishing. As a result of this study, it is found that the main component and the accumulation of pole density vary depending on initial texture and deformation caondition, and the formation and development basal texture components ({0001} <$10\bar{1}0$>) were observed regardless of the initial texure in all case of specimens.

As model waterborne acrylic coatings, mono-dispersed poly(butyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate) copolymer latexes of random copolymer and core/shell type graft copolymer were prepared by seeded multi-staged emulsion polymerization with particle size of $180{\sim}200$ nm using semi-batch type process. Sodium lauryl sulfate and potassium persulfate were used as an emulsifier and an initiator, respectively. The effect of particle texture including core/shell phase ratio, glass transition temperature and crosslinking density, and film forming temperature on the film formation and final properties of film was investigated using SEM, AFM, and UV in this study. The film formation behavior of model latex was traced simultaneously by the weight loss measurement and by the change of tensile properties and UV transmittance during the entire course of film formation. It was found that the increased glass transition temperature and higher crosslinking degree of latex resulted in the delay of the onset of coalescence of particles by interdiffusion during film forming process. This can be explained qualitatively in terms of diffusion rate of polymer chains. However, the change of weight loss during film formation was insensitive to discern each film forming stages-I, II and III.

Gas hydrate has a unique property that can store a large volume of gas in water as a solid form. Even though investigations for natural gas storage technology have been carried out for several decades, there are still a lot of unsolved problems due to complex formation process, low formation speed, high energy consumption and so on. So, lots of experiments were conducted to overcome these weaknesses and to develop artificial NGH formation technology applicable to industrial-scale storage and commercial transport. In this study, some series of experiments were performed to analyze both stirred and unstirred system especially about the influences of several gas hydrate formation factors such as agitation speed, system temperature, SDS concentration, etc. As a result, optimum range of SDS concentration and temperature that could enhance the storage capacity and shorten the formation time were found. And it is obviously presented that SDS such a kind of surfactant promotes gas hydrate formation dramatically and the quantity of stored gas are proportional to agitation speed in stirred system.
Biofilm is a structured community of microorganism encapsulated within a self-developed polymeric matrix and adherent to a living or a solid surface. In this study, we investigated the effects of various substrates on the formation of biofilm in Vibrio parahaemolyticus. We found that biofilm formation profoundly increased in a substrate, that consisted of calcium chloride, calcium nitrate, and calcium sulfate in 1% peptone water. On the other hand, a dramatic reduction in biofilm formation was observed in a substrate, that consisted of glucose and ferric chloride in LB broth. These results suggest that V. parahaemolyticus prefer to form a biofilm on the surface of a crustacean or a clam, where calcium ion is rich, and also where seawater temperature is relatively lower. In contrast, high levels of glucose in a crustacean or a clam body resulting from increased seawater temperature, can make V. parahaemolyticus detach from it and lead to free floating.
Effect of temperature, relative humidity (RH) and free water period on anthracnose development by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was examined on red pepper fruits. Mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides was best at 28$^{\circ}C$, but greatly retarded at 32$^{\circ}C$. Minimum inoculum density required for lesion development varied with isolates, but was mostly above 1.0$\times$105 conidia/ml. Optimum temperature for lesion development on fruits was 31$^{\circ}C$. Percentage of lesion development was decreased as incubation temperature decreased. similar trend of temperature response was observed for acervulus formation on the developed lesions. Acervuli were not developed on the lesion as low as at 19$^{\circ}C$. Lesion development and acervuli formation tended to increase as increasing RH, but were greatly inhibited at the RH lower than 88%. More than 2 hours of free water period after inoculation were required for lesion development. Lesion development was increased as free water period increased. This study indicates that anthracnose development by C. gloeosporioides favors the conditions of high temperature above 28$^{\circ}C$, high humidity above 90% RH, and requires free water period longer than 2 hours.

Herein, the effect of counter anions on the formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in a propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolyte solution was investigated. Although the reversible capacities were different, reversible intercalation and de-intercalation of lithium ions occurred in the graphite negative electrode in the PC-based electrolyte solutions containing 1 M $LiClO_4$, $LiPF_6$, $LiBF_4$, and $LiCF_3SO_3$ at low temperature ($-15^{\circ}C$). This indicated that the surface films acted as an effective SEI to suppress further co-intercalation and decomposition reactions at low temperature. However, the SEIs formed at the low temperature were unstable in 1 M $LiPF_6$ and $LiBF_4/PC$ at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). On the other hand, increasing reversible capacity was confirmed in the case of $LiCF_3SO_3/PC$ at room temperature, because the SEI formed at the low temperature was still maintained. These results suggest that counter anions are an important factor to consider for the formation of effective SEIs in PC-based electrolyte solutions.
Ice cliff retreat and sea-ice formation around King Sejong Station in King George Island were analysed and compared with air temperature change. Analysis of 33-year (1969-2001) air temperature records at Bellingshausen Station has revealed regional atmospheric warming, and the increasing rate of air temperature Is equivalent to a warming of $1^{\circ}C$ for 27-year period. Here we present time-series of observations for the areal extent of the ice cliff and ice sheet, showing that they have retreated dramatically in the past 45 years (1956-2001). Retreat of 1,050 m in length of the ice clifr has changed the Marian Cove into a low rectangular form of 4 km in length and 1 to 1.3km in width. The retreat rates have since increased from 6 m/yr of the Primary investigated Period to 54 and 81m/yr in the recent years. Exceptionally, the ice cliff had been advanced of 21m in length for a year between 1987 and 1988 of cold winters. Ice sheet in King George Island also shows a similar decrease, and the decreasing extent is much larger at the southern part of the Main Cove, relatively more exposed to the sun, than at the northern part. Comparing sea-ice formation in winter with air temperature data shows a pattern starting to freeze below $-5^{\circ}C$ and to thaw over $-3^{\circ}C$. It is conclusively estimated that the patterns and magnitudes of ice cliff retreat and sea-ice formation are consistent with fluctuations of the air temperature, and that the recent rapid retreat of ice cliff and less formation of sea-ice are caused especially by the warming trends in autumn accompanied with expansion of summer thawing period.
Effect of calcium sulfate and barium sulfate on the formation of portland cement clinker was studied by means of chemical analysis. DTA and X-ray diffraction analysis. In the presence of liquid phase, effect of the additives on the formation of tricalcium silicate was examined according to the reaction, 2CaO.$SiO_3$+CaO$\longrightarrow$3CaO.$SiO_3$, which is the principal reaction in portland cement clinkerization, and optimum conditions in firing clinker concerning amount of additive, firing time and temperature were determined, and its kinetics was referred to. The experimental results are summerized as follow: (1) Appropriate burning temperature range of cement clinker is more limited as the content of calcium sulfate in clinker is increased. Amount of calcium sulfate, firing time and temperature in proper condition of clinkerization is related to each others. Being added suitable quantity of calcium sulfate, firing temperature of clinker can be lowered about $100^{\circ}C$. (2) When 3-5 mole% of calcium sulfate is added, firing time of 15-30 minutes at about $1380^{\circ}C$ is reasonable, and if the content is over7 mole %, firing for 1 hr. or more at $1350^{\circ}C$ is anticipated to be optimum condition. (3) In the reaction of tricalcium silicate formation, the role of barium sulfate as a mineralizer is similar to that of calcium sulfate, but the optimum firing temperature of cement clinker containing barium sulfate tends to be 20-$30^{\circ}C$ higher than that of clinker containing calcium sulfate. (4) When barium sulfate is used as mineralizer, 2-3 mole % of it to tricalcium silicate is recommended and if it is added more than this amount, free CaO is increased rapidly in clinker and alite formation is inhibited.

The swirl flame is mostly used to stabilize the flame on the burner nozzle in the industrial combustor. In the case of the weak swirl flame(S<0.4), the recirculation zone could not be formed, but in the strong swirl(S>0.6) flame, it could be formed in the center of the swirl flame. In this study, the measurement and analysis of emission species, temperature, radicals of premixed swirl flame in the combustor were performed to understand the NO formation and emission characteristics of the swirl flame of natural gas. The result of NO emission in the swirl flame is that the amount of NO emission in the strong swirl flame decreased about 60% compared with that of the weak swirl flame. The main region of NO formation of the weak swirl flame is positioned in the down stream(z=100~200mm) of the flame, but that of the strong swirl flame is positioned in the up stream(z=40mm) where the recirculation zone seems to be formed. It is supposed that the increase of flame surface and the formation of inversed flame cause the reduction of the high temperature region on the production of NO in the strong swirl flame. The result of NO-temperature relation revealed that the factor of NO formation is not only temperature but also another parameters in the weak swirl flame, but in the strong swirl flame, NO is proportional to the temperature of higher than 1200K.
