  • I briefly review the current theoretical status of the origins of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays with special emphasis on models associated with galaxy clusters. Some basic constraints on models are laid out, including those that apply both to so-called 'top-down' and 'bottom-up' models. The origins of these UHECRs remain an enigma; no model stands out as a clear favorite. Large scale structure formation shocks, while very attractive conceptually in this context, are unlikely to be able to accelerate particles to energies much above $10^{18}eV$. Terminal shocks in relativistic AGN jets seem to be more viable candidates physically, but suffer from their rarity in the local universe. Several other, representative, models are outlined for comparison.

  • The central molecular zone (CMZ) is a region of rich molecular gas located in the inner few hundred parsecs in barred spiral galaxies. We study the size and morphology evolution of the CMZ of Milky Way-like galaxies both in isolation and in interaction by using N-body/hydrodynamic simulations. Specifically, we examine the gas flows and star formation activities in the central region of the galaxies. We focus in particular on the effects of galaxy interactions, including flybys and minor mergers, on the evolution of the CMZ.

  • We study the three-dimensional genus topology of large-scale structure using the CMASS Data Release 11 sample of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). The CMASS sample yields a genus curve that is characteristic of one produced by Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. The data thus supports the standard model of inflation where random quantum fluctuations in the early universe produced Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. Modest deviations in the observed genus from random phase are as expected from the nonlinear evolution of structure. We construct mock SDSS CMASS surveys along the past light cone from the Horizon Run 3 (HR3) N-body simulations, where gravitationally bound dark matter subhalos are identified as the sites of galaxy formation. We study the genus topology of the HR3 mock surveys with the same geometry and sampling density as the observational sample, and the observed genus topology to be consistent with LCDM as simulated by the HR3 mock samples.

  • Submillimetre and millimetre-wave surveys with Herschel and the South Pole Telescope have revolutionised the discovery of strong gravitational lenses. Their follow-ups have been greatly facilitated by the multi-wavelength supplementary data in the survey fields. The forthcoming Euclid optical/near-infrared space telescope will also detect strong gravitational lenses in large numbers, and orbital constraints are likely to require placing its deep survey at the North Ecliptic Pole (the natural deep field for a wide class of ground-based and space-based observatories including AKARI, JWST and SPICA). In this paper I review the current status of the multi-wavelength survey coverage in the NEP, and discuss the prospects for the detection of strong gravitational lenses in forthcoming or proposed facilities such as Euclid, FIRSPEX and SPICA.

  • We determined the warp parameters of 192 warped galaxies which are selected from 340 edge-on galaxies using color images as well as r-band isophotal maps. We derive the local background density (${\Sigma}_n$) to examine the dependence of the warp amplitudes on the galaxy environment. We find a clear trend that strongly warped galaxies are likely to be found in high density regions where tidal interactions are supposed to be frequent. However, the correlation between ${\alpha}_{\omega}$ and ${\Sigma}_n$ is too weak for weakly warped galaxies (${\alpha}_{\omega}$ < $4^{\circ}$) and the cumulative distributions of weakly warped galaxies are not significantly different from those of galaxies with no detectable warps. This suggests that tidal interactions do not play a decisive role in the formation of weak warps.

  • Dwarf galaxies are the most common type of galaxy in the universe and believed to be basic building blocks of the large scale structures. In order to understand the formation history of these galaxies, we selected two well-observed galaxies in the Local Group and constructed the stellar population models including HB stars. We employed Y$^2$ Isochrones (Yi et al. 2001) and HB tracks (Yi et al. 1997) for stellar population synthesis. Our models show that (1) the Carina dSph has several distinct populations with age of ∼10.5, 5.8, 4.1, 2.8 and 1.0 Gyrs, and (2) stellar populations of the Sextans dSph are constructed in terms of the two populations with age of ∼ 11 and ∼2.5 Gyrs. Observational data were kindly provided by Lee et al. (2003, in preparation) and Monelli et al. (2003) for Sextans and Carina dsphs, respectively.

  • To investigate the SEDs of galaxies considering the dust extinction processes in the galactic disks, we present the population synthesis models for normal galaxies with dusty disks. We use PEGASE (Fioc & Rocca-Volmerange 1997) to model them with standard input parameters for stars and new dust parameters. We find that the model results are strongly dependent on the dust parameters as well as other parameters (e.g. star formation history). We compare the model results with the observations and discuss about the possible explanations. We find that the dust opacity functions derived from studies of asymptotic giant branch stars are useful for modeling a galaxy with a dusty disk.

  • A relativistic jet associated with active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is almost ubiquitous while its formation mechanism is still not well understood. To get a deeper understanding of how an AGN jet forms and evolves, we have obtained Very Large Baseline Array (VLBA) data of a compact and optically violent variable quasar, OVV 1633+382 which is a small line-of-sight angle version of Fanaroff-Reily type 2 galaxy. Before our data were taken, a pronounced flare had been reported at mm wavelengths, making this object an excellent laboratory to study detailed properties of a radio jet powered by an AGN. The target have been observed in 12 epochs between 2002 and 2005 at 22, 43 and 86 GHz in full polarization mode. Among these observations, in this work, we present 43 GHz total intensity maps of our target for three epochs to discuss kinematics and geometry of the jet.

  • AGN feedback has been believed as playing an important role in the galaxy-super massive black hole (SMBH) co-evolution. AGN gas outflow can lead to AGN feedback. We investigate gas outflow of low-redshift AGNs by using blue shift/asymmetric index (BAI), and velocity offset of CIV line. By comparing these gas outflow indicators (BAI and velocity offset) to AGN properties (i.e., SMBH mass, bolometric luminosity, and Eddington ratio) and BLR gas metallicity, we find positive correlations among outflow, Eddington ratio, and metallicity. These relations are consistent with those observed at high-redshift. We discuss the possibility of the connection between previous star formation with current AGN accretion and outflow.

  • New population synthesis models, with the effects of metallicity spread and the horizontal-branch (HB) morphology, provide a way to break the well-known age-metallicity degeneracy in the analysis of the integrated light of elliptical galaxies. Our models suggest that the far- UV radiation of these systems is dominated by a minority population of metal-poor, hot HB stars and their post-HB progeny, while the optical radiation is dominated by a metal-rich population. The systematic variation of UV upturn depends on the contribution from metal-poor, hot HB stars and their post-HB progeny, which in turn depends on the ages of old stellar populations in galaxies. Our result implies a prolonged epoch of galaxy formation, in the sense that more massive galaxies (in denser environments) formed first. Our models also suggest that the strenghth of H$\beta$ index is strongly affected by HB stars, and hence previous age estimation without detailed modeling of the HB would underestimate the ages of ellipticals by $\~$7 Gyr.
