This study was performed to find potentialities of the leaves of gingko tree (Gingko biloba L.) as a raw material for particleboard (PB) manufacturing. Various amounts of the leaves were mixed with wasted wood particles to manufacture PB. Physical and mechanical properties, such as density, internal bond (IB) strength, and modulus of rupture (MOR) of manufactured PB were not much different from those of the control board. Formaldehyde emission values decreased with increasing the amount of leaves. Especially, the formaldehyde emission of PB made with 5 percent of leaves was decreased to 1.31 mg/l, which is about 36% lower emission than that of the control. From these results, the leaves of gingko tree may be considered as an additive of lowering formaldehyde emission in a functional PB manufacturing process.
Sick building syndrome symptoms that are experienced by building occupants may be caused by toxic substances such as formaldehyde and VOCs, which are known to be emitted from building materials and wood composite products such as wood-based panel, furniture, engineered flooring and construction adhesive. In Korea, the use of wood composite products for indoor environments has increased over the last decade. Recently, wood composite products have been installed in approximately 95% of newly constructed residential buildings. The use of these products has resulted in problems related to human health, and consequently a realization about the importance of indoor air quality. In addition, consumer demand is increasing for natural materials because conventional building materials and wood composite products are made by adding urea-formaldehyde resin or they contain formaldehyde-based resin. More recently, many efforts have been made to reduce formaldehyde emission from building materials that laid in the indoor environment. Especially, if conventional formaldehyde-based adhesives are replaced with green adhesives for residential spaces, it is possible to reduce most of the emission amounts of formaldehyde in indoor environments. In line with this expectation, many researches are being conducted using natural materials such as tannin and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). This study discussed the affects and possibilities of green adhesives to reduce formaldehyde emission in indoor environments.

Experiments have been conducted to investigate the characteristics of formaldehyde and nitrous oxide formation from the catalytic reaction of methane. Catalysts used in the experiment were Pd. Pd/Pt/Rh loaded on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3-La_2O_3$ monolith. In the catalytic reaction of methane. as the concentration of NO, $O_2$ and $CH_4$ increased, the formaldehyde emission was increased. The concentration of $N_2O$ increased as NO and CO increased. It was also found that the formaldehyde emission was produced by the gas reaction of methane in high temperature above 950K.
This paper attempted to review measuring methods of formaldehyde emission from wood-based panel products. Methods included for the discussion were desiccator methods, extraction method, and various chamber methods. First, the procedures and testing conditions of 24-hour desiccator method was critically reviewed, and an improvement of this method was proposed to meet international standards. Two different small chamber methods ($20\ell$ and $1m^3$ chamber methods) were also compared in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the regulation levels of formaldehyde emission of wood-based composite panels were compared for different countries. The selection of a reference method of measuring formaldehyde emission of wood panel products should consider the ease of conducting test and cost required. Results should be exchangeable for different methods.

In the quantitative analysis of oxygenated exhaust emissions (unburned methanol, formal- dehyde) from methanol fueled vehicles, the oxygen contained in oxygenated exhaust gases lowers the FID (Flame Ionization Detector) response factor of conventional THC analyzer and leads to erroneous HC reading. For correct measurement of various HCs including oxygenated HCs emitted from FFV(Flexible Fuel Vehicle), first of all, the measurement technique of real HC emissions should be established. GC and HPLC-DNPH measuring methods specified by the EPA are used in this paper to analyze unburned methanol and formaldehyde components in the exhaust emissions. In emission test of FFV, unburned methanol and formaldehyde are emitted mostly during cold transient period, and it is shown that formaldehyde emission level is proportional to engine displacements. In view of the HC emission level, vehicle using M85 has 40% advantage over gasoline-fueled vehicle in OMHCE and has a good potential of a low emission vehicle.
This study was conducted to find potentialities of the leaves of gingko tree (Gingko biloba L.) which has been planted as a roadside tree in Korea because of its resistance on air pollution, insect, fungi, etc. Various amounts of the leaves were mixed with wasted wood particles to manufacture particleboard. Their influences on physical and mechanical properties and the formaldehyde emission of PB were investigated. Physical and mechanical properties, such as density, modulus of rupture (MOR), and internal bond (IB) strength, of manufactured particleboard were not much different from those of control board. Formaldehyde emission values were decreased with increasing amount of leaves in PB prepared. Especially, particleboard made with 3 percent of leaves was decreased to $1.66mg/{\ell}$ in formaldehyde emission, which is about 40% lower emission than that of control. From these results, the leaves of gingko tree may be considered as a formaldehyde emission lowering additive in a functional PB manufacturing process.
Unlike other composites boards such as fiberboard and particleboard, plywood is manufactured with sheets of veneers. When the plywood manufactured, the adhesive is spreaded through gluelines on each surface of veneers. For that reason, formaldehyde emission of plywood can be considered as different way. Therefore, this research was conducted to understand the formaldehyde emission pattern of plywood. To measure formaldehyde emission, four different specimen preparing methods were used. The test specimen taken by a total surface area, a given number and a total side area showed inconsistent results. On the other hand, the result of formaldehyde emission showed consistency when considered only the length of adhesive layers.
The purpose of this study was to examine the performance of formaldehyde removal from building materials using catechin contained in ginkgo leaf. A small chamber method was used to set up one control group and three experimental groups. As a result, it showed a reduction of formaldehyde from at least 73.5% to 77% when it was increased by 0.4g compared to the control (0g). In addition, it was confirmed by linear regression analysis that the amount of ginkgo leaf and the amount of formaldehyde emission were negatively correlated. Therefore, it was confirmed that the amount of formaldehyde emission was affected by ginkgo leaf.

With the recent interest in methanol as a SI engine fuel, aldehyde emissions have become a greater concern. A M-90 fueled passenger car was operated in a chassis dynamometer using FTP 75 driving cycle to examine formaldehyde emissions. Formation process of aldehyde and methods to reduce them are discussed in this paper for a SI-engine passenger car operating by M-90. Aldehyde emissions have been found to be 3 to 7 times higher from M-90 than from gasoline, while CO, NOx, THC are as low or lower than gasoline. Noble metal compositions appeared to play a role in formaldehyde and unburned methanol emission performance. For example, catalyst Pd showed better reduction of both formaldehyde and methanol than catalyst Pt. however, emission rates of formaldehyde and methanol for catalyst Pt were relatively similar to catalyst Pt/Rh.
Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is widely used as an indoor building materials. However, formaldehyde resins, commonly used to bind MDF together, emit formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds that cause health risk at sufficient concentration. In this study, condensed tannin having formaldehyde absorption ability was used to solve the problem of formaldehyde emission generated from surface material. The synthesis of melamine-formaldehyde resin and reaction of melamine-formaldehyde and condensed tannin were analyzed by FT-IR spectrum. Also surface properties, such as shear force, impact strength, tape adhesion, pencil hardness and gloss retention were measured. Free formaldehyde analysis was performed to analyze remaining unreacted formaldehyde. According to the results, the optimum shear force and impact strength could be obtained by 10 wt.% usage of condensed tannin. In cases of pencil hardness and gloss retention, the optimum properties could be obtained at 20 wt.% of condensed tannin. The amounts of formaldehyde emission of surface material containing 20 wt.% of condensed tannin was 59 ${\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$. The amounts of formaldehyde emission could be reduced 3 times by using 20 wt.% of condensed tannin.
