Forest stand yield and its changes along with 10 thinning scenarios were estimated using a forest stand yield model for six major tree species in Korea, such as Pinus densiflora in Gangwon province, Pinus densiflora in other regions, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis, Quercus acutissima Carruth, Quercus mongolica. The 10 thinning scenarios were generated based on a number of constraints and assumptions. For instance, it was assumed that thinning is implemented between 15 years and 40 years with 5 year period and its duration should be at least 10 years. Also, the overall removal rate from the thinning treatments was assumed to be not greater than 60%. Under the 10 scenarios, the overall stand yield volumes from thinning and final harvesting were estimated for each species and site index. The results showed that highest yield volumes were obtained for Pinus densiflora in Gangwon province, Pinus koraiensis and Quercus mongolica when 30% of basal areas were thinned at 20 and 40 years, while highest yield volumes were obtained for Pinus densiflora in other regions and Larix leptolepis when 20% of basal areas were thinned at 20, 30 and 40 years. Those two scenarios gave the same amount of highest yield volume for Quercus acutissima Carruth. Also the results indicated that thinning treatment is effective to increase overall stand yield volume and its effects are larger with a higher site index. The largest thinning effects were found in Pinus densiflora in Gangwon province (28%) and Larix leptolepis (25%), while limited in Pinus koraiensis (12%). The forest stand yield model, used in this research, could be an effective tool for estimating the stand dynamics with various thinning treatments, but it could be improved in a further research that validates its applicability in the field.

Based on forestry inventory data and various informations, this study was conducted to analyze the silvicultural activities by distance classes from forest road and to evaluate their effects in the area of Mt. Gari managed by Chunchon Regional Office of Northern Forest Management Office. The results were summarized as follows; 1) Most harvesting practice(67.9%) was done within 500m from forest roads, in the order of Pumgul, Saorang, and Kongkol forest road. And thinning practice was not related to the distance from forest road, produced $440.6m^3$, 35.7% of total thinning volume within 1,000m width along the forest roads. 2) Planting of 530,461 seedlings, 66.8% of total planting stock, in 176.9ha, 66.6% of total area within 1,000m from forest road, and supplementary planting of 46,243 seedlings was done in 15.4ha, 42.9% of total area within 500m from forest road. Areas and numbers of seedlings of two planting practices were in the order of Pumgul and Byungatur forest road. 3) Tending operation was done in 330.0ha, 60.3% of total area within 500m from forest road, and pre-commercial thinning was done in 693.6ha, 71.2% of total area. Areas of intermediate cutting practices were in the order of Pumgul, Korkol, and Saorang forest road.

The purpose of this study was to identify and prioritize the key indicators and drivers of forest thinning. The research for this study was designed in two-phases: 1) sequential, exploratory, mixed methods research that was initiated with a qualitative phase (Delphi technique), and 2) the quantitative phase (Analytic Hierarchy Process technique). Results indicated that management and planning were the most important factors in the first level of criteria among the "management and planning," "directing and monitoring," "supervision," and "quality of thinning work." On the sub-criteria level, "the quality of forest management planning" was indicated as the most important factor among the ten sub-criteria. Our results have shown that the developed forest thinning evaluation factors were a well-represented characteristic for a variety of forest thinning work in Korea.
Pinus koraiensis is one of the major speciese which have been recently planted for ten years and consists of 31% of total plantation. Presently young stand less than 30 years consists of 87% of total forest, but tending thinning of it is hardly carried out and the desirable direction for the thinning is not established yet. The objective of the study is to introduce the optimum thinning plan and thinning method through the long-run experiment of tending thinning for the Pinus koraiensis stand. The experiments carry out to interprete its growth model on the subject of two thinning experimental plots and yield table of Pinus koraiensis. As the basic step for understanding the thinning process, a theoretical growth model which is suitable to express the growth process is required. For that purpose, three growth functions (Mitscherlich, 4 parameter Richards, 3 parameter Richards) are applied to the diameter growth of the sample trees which are taken in the two plots. The results show that 3 parameter Richards is the most suitable. It is also verified that the diameter growth, the height growth, and the decrease in the number of stocks can be estimated by this function. To estimate the growth change of single tree, growth model including parameter h which is related to the occupation area of single tree are introduced. The parameter h can be estimated by using the data of the diameter growth obtained from the established experimental plots. Therefore, if both verification and modification of the usefulness of the model suggested is made, equations which tell about the thinning effects could be drived by estimating the growth process of single tree in advance.

This study was conducted to evaluate the felling productivity by chain saw in thinning operation of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) stands. Time study data were collected from 4 thinning site in Korean pine stands. This study derived a regression model to estimate the average felling cycle time for evaluating the productivity in felling, which was used to analyze the felling productivity by thinning period. In the study sites, the average felling cycle time per a tree was 463 sec/cycle and the productivity was $2.26m^3/hr$. Thinning period in Korean pine is divided into three groups by producing purposes; small-diameter log, medium-diameter log, and large-diameter log. And analyzed working time and productivity from thinning period fixed by producing purposes. For the small-diameter log producing purpose estimated to be thinning period operated once when the mean DBH was 16 cm and its productivity was $8.94m^3/man{\cdot}day$. For the medium-diameter and large-diameter log producing purposes, thinning period was twice and three times when the mean DBH of the 1st and 2nd thinning period was 16 cm and 21 cm, and its productivity was $9.06m^3/man{\cdot}day$ and $10.86m^3/man{\cdot}day$. The 30 cm in DBH and $15.12m^3/man{\cdot}day$ in productivity was operated 3rd thinning for the large-diameter log producing purposes.

To investigate the effects of nitrogen fertilization and thinning on growth and nutrition of current-year needle and twigs in Pinus koraiensis we treated two clone banks with three levels of nitrogen fertilizer in Yongin and Chuncheon, and also thinned two plantations with three intensities in Yangpyeong. The fertilization and thinning effects greatly varied depending on study sites and stand ages. However, dry weights of needle and twig increased following low nitrogen fertilization in older stands. Moderate thinning increased dry weight and nitrogen concentration of twigs in the 12-year-old stand.
Changes in breeding bird community and forest structure by thinning were investigated from April 1997 to August 1998 in 10ha ($400{\times}250m$) of temperate mixed hardwood forest in Mt. Gariwang which is located in National Forest, Pyoungchang, Kangwon Province, Korea. Bird community was surveyed by the territory mapping method and forest structure was done by analyzing the vertical structure of foliage, distribution of diameter at breast height (DBH) of trees and tree species composition. After the thinning, tree density, number of tree species and basal area were decreased from 195ea/ha, 18 species and 6.69 $m^2/ha$ into 100ea/ha, 13 species and 3.04 $m^2/ha$, respectively. Foliage coverages in upper and mid layer were decreased, but coverage in low layer was increased. Large trees (Over 40cm of DBH) were decreased. Number of breeding bird species and pairs were decreased from 14 species and 23 pairs into 8 species and 12 pairs after the thinning. Number of breeding pairs of Yellow-breasted bunting Emberiza elegans incresed. There were decrease in number of species in hole & bush-nesting and canopy & bush-foraging guild. The results suggested that the thinning affect the species composition of breeding bird community and the forest structure. Changes of habitat structure might influence in breeding bird's density, species diversity and habitat using pattern of breeding bird community.

This study presents a method how to estimate the change of stand volume, the stand biomass and the carbon removals, using dynamic stand growth model according to whether the practices for forest management are implemented or not. As a result, it shows that the rate of stand change was significantly high if the practices were implemented. Consequently, the change of carbon removals was also high. The carbon removals at the stand where the practices were not implemented, was estimated about 0.27tC/ha. And the carbon removals at the stand where the practices were implemented, was estimated 166.02tC/ha(thinning from above) and 163.75tC/ha(thinning from below). It is confirmed that the thinning activities has a great influence on the change of carbon removals and there was little difference of the carbon removals between thinning types. From this result, it is proved that forest management like thinning activities is prerequisite condition to improve the carbon removals of stand.
This study was carried out to investigate the change on soil $CO_2$ efflux rates, soil temperature, soil water content and soil pH by thinning intensity treatments (heavy thinning, light thinning, control) of a black pine (Pinus thunbergii Parl.) stand disturbed by pine wilt disease in Wola National Experimental Forests in Jinju, Gyeongnam province. Monthly variations of soil $CO_2$ efflux rates were not significantly different between the thinning and the control treatments (P>0.05). The annual mean soil $CO_2$ efflux rates were $0.58g\;CO_2m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for the light thinning, $0.49g\;CO_2m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for the heavy thinning and $0.45g\;CO_2m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for the control treatments, respectively. There was a significant exponential relation between soil $CO_2$ efflux rates and soil temperature, but no correlation between soil water content or soil pH and soil $CO_2$ efflux rates. The values of $Q_{10}$ were 3.40 for the light thinning, 3.20 for the heavy thinning and 3.06 for the control treatments, respectively. The results indicate that soil $CO_2$ efflux rates in a black pine stand disturbed by pine wilt disease could be affected by thinning treatments.

In Japan, about 67% of the land is covered by forests and about 41% of them consist of plantations. About 35% of the plantations consist of old-aged plantations of older than 50 yearsand the percentage is projected to 67% in ten years' time. Although the trees of these plantations are supposed to be cut for timber production, most of them remain unmanaged and thus overcrowded mainly due to declining domestic forest industry. Since the forests are mostly located in headwater watershed, there are growing concerns about the degradation of water resources by these unmanaged plantations. To understand the ecohydrological processes in these plantations and examine the effect of intensive 50-60 % thinning to increase infiltration rate and reduce overland flow and soil erosion by recovering understory vegetation, the JST-CREST project "Development of Innovative Technologies for Increasing in Watershed Runoff and Improving River Environment by the Management Practice of Devastated Forest Plantation (Representative: Yuichi Onda)" has been launched since 2009. The ultimate objective of this project is to provide potential scenario to enhance low flow discharge in drought period and reduce turbid material in high flow period. We have been conductingintensive field observation campaign in five research sites across Japan. In Fukuoka site, integrated ecohydrological observations have been conductedin two contrastive watersheds since 2010. Intensive 50% thinning was conducted from January to April 2012 and comparative studies of ecohydrological processes before and after thinning have been started. The interim results from all the sites of this project will be presented in the 3rd International Congress for Forest and Water in a Changing Environment held in Fukuoka during 18-20 September, 2012 (http://www.forest.kyushu-u.ac.jp/~ecohydrol/3ForestWater/index.html).
