This study was conducted to support for determining an efficient sampling design for forest resources assessments in South Korea with respect to statistical efficiency. For this objective, different systematic sampling designs were simulated and compared based on an artificial forest population that had been built from field sample data and satellite data in Yang-Pyeong County, Korea. Using the k-NN technique, two thematic maps (growing stock and forest cover type per pixel unit) across the test area were generated; field data (n=191) and Landsat ETM+ were used as source data. Four sampling designs (systematic sampling, systematic sampling for post-stratification, systematic cluster sampling, and stratified systematic sampling) were employed as optimum sampling design candidates. In order to compute error variance, the Monte Carlo simulation was used (k=1,000). Then, sampling error and relative efficiency were compared. When the objective of an inventory was to obtain estimations for the entire population, systematic cluster sampling was superior to the other sampling designs. If its objective is to obtain estimations for each sub-population, post-stratification gave a better estimation. In order to successfully perform this procedure, it requires clear definitions of strata of interest per field observation unit for efficient stratification.
This study compared and analyzed the construction of a land use change matrix for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) land use, land use change, and forestry area (LULUCF). We used National Forest Inventory (NFI) permanent sample plots (with a sample intensity of 4 km) and permanent sample plots with 500 m sampling intensity. The land use change matrix was formed using the point sampling method, Level-2 Land Cover Maps, and forest aerial photographs (3rd and 4th series). The land use change matrix using the land cover map indicated that the annual change in area was the highest for forests and cropland; the cropland area decreased over time. We evaluated the uncertainty of the land use change matrix. Our results indicated that the forest land use, which had the most sampling, had the lowest uncertainty, while the grassland and wetlands had the highest uncertainty and the least sampling. The uncertainty was higher for the 4 km sampling intensity than for the 500 m sampling intensity, which indicates the importance of selecting the appropriate sample size when constructing a national land use change matrix.
This study was conducted to develop an efficient method of sampling design appropriate for the sustainable forest management. For this, data were collected in Yangpyung-Gun, Gyunggi Province based on three different sampling designs such as systematic design, systematic cluster design, and stratified cluster design. Based on evaluation statistics, the sampling designs were compared to select a sampling method fitted to sustainable forest management. It was found that the systematical cluster sampling is the most efficient sampling method in terms of feasibility for sustainable forest management. It was also recommended that the sample plots should be made as a cluster of triangle-shape. The clusters should be consisted of a main plot and three sub-plots. And the sub-plots should be arranged with a distance of 50m from the main plot in the center of cluster.

The purpose of this study was to propose the most cost-effective sampling method, by analyzing the cost of forest resource investigation per sampling method for the planned harvesting area of in Chunyang-myeon, Byeonghwa-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. For this study, three sampling methods were selected: random sampling method, systematic sampling method, and line transect method. For each method, sample size, hourly wage, number of sample points, survey time, travel time, the sample error rate of the estimated average volume, and the desired sampling error rate were used to calculate the cost of forest resource inventories. Thus, 10 sampling points were extracted for each sampling method, and the factors required for cost analysis were calculated via a field survey. As a result, the field survey cost per ha using the random sampling method was found to be have the lowest cost, regardless of the desired sampling error rate, followed by the systematic sampling method, and the line transect method.
In the machine learning techniques, the sampling strategy of the training data affects a performance of the prediction model such as generalizing ability as well as prediction accuracy. Especially, in landslide susceptibility analysis, the data sampling procedure is the essential step for setting the training data because the number of non-landslide points is much bigger than the number of landslide points. However, the previous researches did not consider the various sampling methods for the training data. That is, the previous studies selected the training data randomly. Therefore, in this study the authors proposed several different sampling methods and assessed the effect of the sampling strategies of the training data in landslide susceptibility analysis. For that, total six different scenarios were set up based on the sampling strategies of landslide points and non-landslide points. Then Random Forest technique was trained on the basis of six different scenarios and the attribute importance for each input variable was evaluated. Subsequently, the landslide susceptibility maps were produced using the input variables and their attribute importances. In the analysis results, the AUC values of the landslide susceptibility maps, obtained from six different sampling strategies, showed high prediction rates, ranges from 70 % to 80 %. It means that the Random Forest technique shows appropriate predictive performance and the attribute importance for the input variables obtained from Random Forest can be used as the weight of landslide conditioning factors in the susceptibility analysis. In addition, the analysis results obtained using specific sampling strategies for training data show higher prediction accuracy than the analysis results using the previous random sampling method.
This survey was estimated under the ratio estimate such as single class method, simple random sampling method, compound ratio sampling method, separate ratio sampling method and average tree sampling method artificial forest pitch pine volume. The following results were realized by the ratio estimates. At the above table simple random sampling method and compound ratio sampling method are the only ones which is included the actual stand volume in the ratio estimatedstand volume. It is thought that the sampling was in a such good result was because of stand structual stands were simple forest. The most simple measurement and calcuation on the stand volume estimates, in order, would be (1) single class method, (2) simple random sampling method (3) average tree method (4) separate ratio sampling method and compound ratio sampling method, and at the planted evenaged forest the method has realized the best results in obtaining good accuracy and the measure stand volume with least time, expenses and labor in considerably.
1. The purpose of this study was to find out the best sampling form and sampling unit in forest survey. 2. The value of small sampling unit was over estimated in comparison with that of large sampling unit. 3. The value of circular form was over estimated in comparison with that of the others. 4. The smallest unit for estimation in area sampling were as follows. a) 0.06 ha. in the rectangular plot. b) 0.08 ha. in the square plot. c) 0.10 ha. in the circular plot. 5. Conclusion was as follows. The best sampling unit was 0.06 hectoare in the rectangular plot, which was most economic above all and gave preferable result for in the forest survey.
The purpose of this paper was to figure out the efficiencies of two sampling techniques, a simple random sampling and a two-stage P.P.S. (probability proportional to size) sampling, in estimating the volume of the mature coniferous stands near Salzburg, Austria. With black-and-white infrared photographs at a scale 1:10,000, the following four classes were considered; non-forest, young stands less than 40 years, mature beech and mature coniferous stands. After the classification, a field survey was carried out using a relascope with a BAF (basal area factor) 4. For the simple random sampling, 99 points were sampled, while for the P.P.S. sampling, 75 points were sampled in the mature coniferous stands. The following results were obtained. 1) The mean standing coniferous volume estimate was $422.0m^3/ha$ for the simple random sampling and $433.5m^3/ha$ for the P.P.S. sampling method. However, the difference was not statistically significant. 2) The required number of sampling points for a 5% sampling error were 170 for the two stage P.P.S. sampling, but 237 for the simple random sampling. 3) The two stage P.P.S. method reduced field survey time by 17% as compared to the simple random sampling.
1) The purpose of this study was to compare the forest survey by ground method with that by aerial photo method. 2) In this study, the forest type map was made by use of the radial line plotter and radial line triangulation method. 3) The difference between the area found by the forest type map above mentioned and that by compass surveying on the ground was none-significant. 4) On aerial photo the stratification was carried out very easily. 5) The following sampling methods were applied : line plot method, representative sampling method and stratified random sampling on the aerial photo. 6) In confirming sampling point the line plot method and the representative sampling method were easier than another. 7) As to stands volume the maximum value was given by stratification, and the minimum by line plot method.

Acquiring accurate quantitative and qualitative information is necessary for the technical and scientific management of forest stands. In this study, stratification and systematic random sampling methods were used to estimation of quantitative characteristics in study area. The estimator ($((E%)^2xT)$) was used to compare the systematic random and stratified sampling methods. 100 percent inventory was carried out in an area of 400 hectares; characteristics as: tree density, crown cover (canopy), and basal area were measured. Tree density of stands was compared through systemic random and stratified sampling methods. Findings of the study reveal that stratified sampling method gives a better representation of estimates than systematic random sampling.
