Korean oak wilt disease caused by Raffaelea quercus-mongolicae is vectored by the ambrosia beetle Platypus koryoensis. To prevent the spread of the disease, the beetle infested oak tree had been cut into logs, covered with plastic vinyl, fumigated with a pesticide, and stored for three years on the site where the tree was cut. This study was carried out to get information on the fungi colonizing the fumigated oak wood. Wood disk samples collected from the fumigated oak logs at two locations in the Taejo Mountain, Cheonan city, were used for fungal isolation. A total of 99 filamentous fungal isolates were obtained from the wood disk samples. Hypocrea spp., Trichoderma spp. and Penicillium spp. were identified based on morphological characteristics and nucleotide sequence analysis of translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene and ITS rDNA region. Trichoderma was the major fungal group. R. quercus-mongolicae, and P. koryoensis were not detected from the fumigated oak wood. Our work provided evidence that after three years of storage, the fumigated oak wilt-diseased logs should be no longer harmful source of oak wilt disease transmission.
This study was conducted to develop environmentally friendly control techniques to reduce chestnut insect pests. The study sites were selected in intensive chestnut orchards of Jinju city, Gyeongnam province. In early and middle-ripening cultivars of chestnut tree, the damage of chestnut fruits by Dichocrocis punctiferalis was significantly lower in wromstop than other treatment such as wromstop+wood vinegar, Capture-machine (p<0.05), While there was no significant difference among treatments in late-ripening cultivars. The hight control effect for D. punctiferalis was showed the highest in wromstop treanment with 40.49% and 41.89% in early and late-ripening cultivars. The control effects for Curculio sikkimensis in late-ripening cultivars of chestnut tree were 34.59% in wromstop imidacloprid treatment and 28.94% in air control treatment.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of coniferous essential oils (EOs) blended films on insect repellence and crop productivity. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film is widely used, especially in agriculture and for food packaging. Ethylene vinyl acetate was blended with LDPE to reduce volatilization of EOs. An EO from Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) was incorporated into the blend film to conduct field research on antimicrobial and insect repellent properties. Among the various concentrations of EO, the highest concentration (2.5%) showed the highest efficiency in terms of pesticidal activity. The ability to inhibit microbial growth can be explained by the lipophilic properties of the EO component, and many studies have already demonstrated this. Agricultural films containing all types of EO have been tested on various crops such as chili, cucumber, Korean melon and have been able to verify their effectiveness in avoiding pests and increasing yields. From these results, it was found that it is reasonable to use a modified film such as a composite film containing an EO for agriculture. Thus, the modified film containing EO has undoubtedly shown impressive potential for reducing the use of pesticides in a variety of ways, not only for agricultural mulching film but also for food and agricultural product packaging. This product is an environmentally friendly chemical and is safe for agricultural and industrial and food packaging applications, among others. In particular, the use of agricultural films significantly reduces the use of pesticides, suggesting that farmers can increase their incomes by reducing working hours and costs, and increasing production.
Overwintering ecology of the peach pyralid moth, Dichocrosis punctiferalis Guenee (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was studied in laboratory and in a chestnut orchard in 2001/2002 winter and 2003 spring. All twenty-four female and fourteen male moths were fruit-feeding type which were emerged from the larvae collected at the same chestnut orchard in 2003 winter. Periodical thermal treatment of overwintering larvae at $25^{\circ}C$ revealed that diapause termination of the larval population started from the end of January and was completed until April 20 in southern region of Korea. Pupation of diapause-terminated larvae started from early May and reached to $100\%$ at June 3 in chestnut orchard. Days to pupation of female larvae after diapause termination were 12.5, 8.9, and 7.5 at $20^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Those of male larvae were similar to those of females. Pupal periods of female were 14.7, 11.8, and 9.0 days at the three temperatures. Moths of the overwintered generation emerged from May 20 to June 28, and reached to $50\%$ emergence on June 8 to 9 under emergence cage. Attraction of the male moths of overwintered generation to sex pheromone traps showed that the date of $50\%$ catches to the traps were June 17, when data from 3 southern regions of Korea were pooled.

The genus Mitrula (Mitrulaceae, Helotiales), as also known as swamp beacons, inhabits submerged, decaying vegetation in standing or decaying needles, twigs, leaves, and shallow water. They play an important role in carbon cycling in some freshwater ecosystems. In the herbarium of the Korea National Arboretum (KH), seven Mitrula specimens were collected during mushroom forays in the period from 2019 to 2021. The Korean collections were found to be macromorphologically closely related to M. paludosa and M. elegans, but micro-morphologically they could be distinguished by characteristics of slightly narrower asci and aseptate ascospores. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S rDNA regions also revealed that our specimens were related to M. paludosa and M. elegans, but formed a distinct clade. Based on these results, we reported our specimens as new to science and discussed the phylogeny and diversity of Mitrula species.

The spread and expansion of pests and pathogens due to climate change have caused considerable reduction of rice yield in agricultural landscapes. This study was conducted to quantitatively analyze the spread of rice pathogens carried by insect pests on spatial network in South Korea using graph-theoretic methods. We identified the connectivity "backbone" of pathogen spread network among the cities along the coastal area of West Sea. In addition, we graphically represented 1) the core areas that can cause local and regional outbreaks of pathogens; and 2) the areas that act as bottlenecks in the spread of pathogen which can link the core areas. Especially, the cities in the coastal areas of West Sea that have the high density of rice crops, represented a low spread resistance to pathogen infection. These results may suggest insights into planning the integrated pest management possibly through regional collaboration.

Cedar-apple rust fungi had been collected at 36 sites throughout the country from 1984 to 2001 and deposited at the Herbarium of Korea Forest Research Institute (HKFRI). We conducted the morphological examination on the dried specimens by light and scanning electron microscopy and as results six Gymnosporangium species were identified. Three species, G. asiaticum, G. clavaritforme and G. yamadae, were previously described in Korea, while the other three species, G. cornutum, G. globosum, and G. japonicum were new to Korea. Here we present the detailed morphological descriptions, distribution, host ranges and keys to species in both aecial and telial stages of each species. Some morphological characteristics related with telial formation on trees were newly identified; witches brooms for G. asiaticum, small galls for G. yamadae and telial formations on trunk for G. japonicun Geographically G. asiaticum and G. yamadae distributed widely throughout Korea, while the others were collected only at the limited locations. Eight Juniperus species as telial hosts and fifteen Rosaceous plants as aecial hosts were confirmed to be new in Korea.

This study was conducted to investigate the seasonal occurrence of chestnut weevil, Curculio sikkimensis. The chestnuts infected by the weevils were collected from Gongju, Buyeo, and Cheongyang in Chungnam Province, Republic of Korea. Investigation was focus on the escape period of chestnut weevil larvae from the fruits, invading time and vertical distribution in soil, survival rates of larvae during overwintering, emergence period, emergence rate, and sex ratio and longevity of adults. For precocious species, larvae escaped the chestnut from the mid-September to the early-October, middle species and slow species, were escaped from the late-September to the mid-October and from the early-October to the mid-November. After escaping from the chestnut fruits all of the larvae burrowed into the soil within 35 minutes. Overwintering larvae inhabited in the range of $0{\sim}48cm$ from the soil surface and highly distributed in the range of $18{\sim}36cm$. The 74.1 % of wintering chamber were distributed within $18{\sim}36cm$ from the surface. Survival rates observed were 38.0% in 1st year, 16.0% in 2nd years, and 2% in 3rd years, respectively. Seasonal occurrence period of C. sikkimensis was from the early-Aug. to early-Oct. and the optimal occurrence period was the early and mid-Sept. Emergence rate decreased to 8.4% in 1st year, 3.6% in 2nd years, and 0.8% in 3rd years, respectively. Sex ratio was showed in the range of 0.51-0.55. It is female biased ratio. Longevity of adults was 9.9 days for female and 8.9 days for male.
