  • This paper examined the effects of children's interests and attitudes toward mother's native culture and use of mother's native language on satisfaction of the mother-child relationship in multi-cultural families. Data from the 2012 National Survey of Multi-cultural Families demonstrate that for children aged between 9 and 12 years, their fluency and desire to speak well in the mother's native language as well as father's encouragement for using the mother's native language at home were positively associated with satisfaction of the mother-child relationship. For those aged between 13 and 18 years, mother's nationality (i.e. Southeast or South Asia) was negatively related with mother-child relationship satisfaction. Both mother's and children' communication skills, children's interests in mother's native culture, pride for mother being a foreigner, and desire to speak well in the mother's native language were positively associated with mother-child relationship satisfaction. Therefore, there is a need for foreign wives to be educated in Korean language and culture as well as opportunities for children to learn their mother's native culture and language.

  • This Study in order to review the history of our children's costumes, this study examined the socio-cultural background of Chosun dynasty and then, reviewed children's costumes comprehensively during that period according to their considerations, kinds, colors and patterns. In addition, this study explored the possibility of making use of the characteristics of children's costumes during Chosun dynasty, since it was perceived that if our children should be dressed in a traditional costume designed with some traditional costume characteristics and ornaments, our tradition would be enlivened in their life and spirit. It is results can be summed up as follows; Our traditional costumes consisted basically of Yu(襦), Go(袴). Sang(裳) and Po(袍) and additionally of Headgear(冠帽), Dae(帶), Hwa(靴) or Yi and Beosun, which must prove that the Korean people is cultural people. Our ancestors were dressed first in Yu(襦), Go(袴). Sang(裳) and Po(袍) to be supported by dae(帶). Our traditional costume style was 'front adjustment' or otherwise, left or right adjustment. Commoners' costumes would change after the series of foreign invasions and again during mid-late Chosun dynasty. During the period of King Sukjong, Jeogori was far shorter and smaller, while China was more diversified and voluminous enough to look like a jar.

  • This study sought to analyze the trends in research on Korean fathers with young children. In this study, journal articles related to child and family studies, early childhood education and childcare published between 1980 and 2006 were analyzed for research frequency, content, and methodology. The study results were as follows. First, 56 research articles on Korean fathers with young children were published during this period of time. Second, the research was primarily focused on fathering attitudes and the relationships between the characteristics of the father and the development of the child. Third, the majority of the studies used methods categorized as quantitative and non-experimental: the subjects included more than 100 fathers with 3-5-year-old children. Research instruments validated in foreign countries (52.4%), surveys (75.4%), and quantitative data analysis methods (98.2%) were primarily used in these research studies. Finally, the results of this study suggest that further studies concerning Korean fathers with young children need to be conducted according to current research trends, content, and methodology.

  • The 121 five-year-old Korean subjects of this study were divided in 3 groups based on their experience in learning a foreign language (English). A battery of tests was administered to measure spoken and written language ability and the 3 metalinguistic domains of phonological, semantic, and syntactic awareness. Spoken language ability was positively correlated with semantic and syntactic awareness. The relative importance of each metalinguistic domain varied with level of written language development. Phonological awareness was the only predictor of decoding. Syntactic awareness and phonological awareness were significant variables in sentence comprehension. Metalinguistic ability was a better predictor of written language development than spoken language ability. Foreign language learning experience had an effect on syntactic awareness: low experience was superior to no experience, but high experience was not superior to low experience.

Preoperative imaging study showed a movable calcified object in the pelvic cavity and air bubbles in the bladder. At laparotomy a bezoar-like mass was found at the antimesenteric border of the terminal ileum adherent to the dome of bladder. Segmental resection of the ileum and partial cystectomy were performed.

  • Backgroud and Objectives: Inhalation of foreign bodies in respiratory tract can be fatal to infants and child. After ventilating bronchoscopy technique was widelyused, most of the pediatric airway foreign bodies could be managed effectively. In this study, we aimed to analyze clinicalfeatures and outcomes of ventilating bronchoscopic removal of pediatric airway foreign bodies. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty cases of ventilating bronchoscopy for pediatric airway foreign bodies at Seoul National University Hospital for the past 15 years were analyzed retrospectively. Results: In 120 cases, sex ratio (male: female) was 2.2:1 and mean age was 27.0 months. Most frequent type of airway foreign was peanut (60.2%). One hundred thirteen patients, in whom a foreign body was confirmed in the airway, were successfully managed by ventilating bronchoscopy. Delayed diagnosis and management made a significantly long postoperative hospital stay. Conclusion: Great care must be given when feeding young children, especially younger than 36 months, with nuts. Early intervention with ventilating bronchoscopy following a clinical suspicion is critical to successful treatment.
