A Study on the Syntagma & Paradigm by Repetition, Variation and Contrast in Ads

  • This study is the academic work to explore the potential meanings of print advertisements. Linguistic features such as repetition, variation, contrast and phonological structure in the verbal texts of ads can give rise to shades-of-meaning or slight variations in advertising. The language of advertising is not only language in words. It is also a language in images, colors, and pictures. Pictures and words combine to form the advertisement's visual text.. While the words are very important in delivering the sales message, the visual text cannot be ignored in advertisements. Forming part of the visual text is the paralanguage of the ad. Paralanguage is the meaningful behaviour accompanying language, such as voice quality, gestures, facial expressions and touch in speech, and choice of typeface and letter sizes in writing. Foregrounding is the throwing into relief of the linguistic sign against the background of the norms of ordinary language. This paper focuses its discussion on the advertisements within the framework of the paradigmatic and the syntagmatic relationship. The sources of ads have been confined to Malboro. The ads were reselected based on purposive sampling methods.

반응적 교수법이 예비화학교사들의 증발과 끓음에 관한 수업설계 인식에 미친 영향 (The Effect of Responsive Teaching Method on the Recognition of Pre-service Chemistry Teachers about Instructional Design related to Evaporation and Boiling)

  • 이 연구에서는 H대학교 화학교육과 예비교사들을 대상으로 반응적 교수법의 효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 토론을 학습자 생각의 본질 존중하기, 학습자 생각에서 학문적 연결 관계 인식하기, 학습자 생각의 본질 확장하기의 3단계로 구성하였다. 학습자 생각의 본질 존중하기 단계에서는 예비교사 20명을 대상으로 실시한 설문지를 분석하여 증발과 끓음에 관련된 예비교사들의 생각의 본질을 파악하였다. 이 중에서 5명의 예비교사를 선발하여 자신의 생각과 학문적 연결 관계를 인식하도록 하였다. 이러한 단계를 통해 예비교사들은 증발과 끓음에 대한 자신들의 생각의 본질을 파악하였으며, 이러한 생각의 본질을 학문적으로 연결하여 사고의 프레임을 수정하거나 확장하는 과정을 경험하였다. 또한 예비교사 스스로 자신의 개념이 역동적인 변화하는 과정을 직접 체험함으로써 반응적 교수법의 효과를 인식하였다.

Shmuel N. Eisenstadt and the Comparative Political History of Pre-Eighteenth-Century Empires

  • This essay critically analyses the legacy of Eisenstadt's The Political Systems of Empires for the comparative political history of pre-industrial empires. It argues that Eisenstadt has given us a rich toolkit to conceptualize the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of empires by theorizing the structural relationships between social groups in large-scale polities and among such polities, and by analysing global patterns of development in the distribution of the sources of social power. The Political Systems of Empires provides an inventory of key questions and dynamics that a comparative history of power relationships in empires cannot ignore. This essay, furthermore, discusses three methodological problems in Eisenstadt's work which have had a significant impact on comparative empire studies between the 1980s and the 2000s. The essay argues that certain shared features of comparative studies of pre-industrial empires help perpetuate Eurocentric analyses: the foregrounding of select empires and periods as ideal types (typicality), the focus on macro-historical structures and dynamics without the integration of social relationships and actions in historical conjunctures (the lack of scalability), and the search for convergence and divergence. These features need to be overcome to make Eisenstadt's legacy viable for comparative political history.

Tristram Shandy: A Sentimental Journey Riding a Hobbyhorse

  • This paper reads Tristram Shandy around the issue of hobbyhorse, Sterne's main contribution to novelistic techniques as well as his insightful understanding of the modern condition. First, Sterne represents his characters according to the principle of hobbyhorse, declaring "I will draw my uncle Toby's character from his HOBBY-HORSE." Gradually distancing himself from the Juvenalian satiric mode as well as Henry Fielding's grand narrative and Samuel Richardson's psychological realism, as is seen in the early episode of Yorick's death, Sterne suggests that the best way to represent his characters lies in describing their hobbyhorses. Sterne's foregrounding of hobbyhorse is linked with his embrace of madness as part of the modern identity. He accepts that hobbyhorse-riding, a quirky and mad habit of mind or behavior, is indispensable for some people, like Uncle Toby, to survive and get along with their otherwise unbearable lives. Uncle Toby's hobbyhorse of waging mock battles in the bowling green saves him from the perplexing real world of language and sexuality, while the fictionality of his hobbyhorsical world is exposed by Widow Wadman. Since a hobbyhorse is by definition a world of private pleasure and eccentricity, sentimentalism comes along to bridge the two virtually incommensurable hobbyhorsical world in place of linguistic communication. Yet if Tristram Shandy fully stages sentimentalism, a cardinal part of hobbyhorse riding, it also offers an awareness of it, which is a significant development in the cult of sentimentalism in the eighteenth century. Tristram Shandy performs a version of sentimental journey where each character rides his hobbyhorse and the reader is invited to ride his/her own hobbyhorse.

  • 이 논문은 국내 영화 <거울속으로>와 리메이크인 <미러>를 비교 분석하는 것이다. 두 영화는 거울에 반사된 이미지와 실제와의 차이를 부각시키는 21세기 초 국내 영화의 경향을 예시한다. 기본적인 설정과 플롯에는 유사성이 있지만, 내러티브를 이끌어가는 동기 등에서 주요한 차이점들이 있다. <거울속으로>는 원혼설화의 서사전통을 따르는데, 권선징악의 구도에 사회 비판 의식이 내포되어 있다. 거울을 통한 악령의 사악한 작용이 지배적인 <미러>는 서양의 공포영화의 전통을 따르고 있다. 이 리메이크는 동양문화를 근간으로 하는 서사를 기독교 문화가 지배적인 서구적 관점에서 재해석하고 재창조하는 한 방식을 예시해준다.

세계문학의 과제와 보편의 문제 (The Task of World Literature and the Problem of Universality)

  • The term of world literature is now becoming an issue and lens through which we need to rethink the value of literature on a more universal dimension so as to imagine newly the location of the local or regional literature that has been alienated from the field of world literature. This kind of recognition leads us to consider the term world literature in relation to globalization and universality and to locate it on a problematical territory rather than to understand it in the traditional and Western way. Therefore the concept of world literature is now given to us as a task to resolve from our particular, or more precisely, peripheral context. The peripheral context could best operate as a possibility of reforming the West-centered order of world literature particularly in the way in which world literature obtains a more universal value. When we discuss world literature we need to consider the way of practice to re-highlight the possibility of periphery and pre-modernity without neglecting the 'light' of modernity and center. In this respect, the discourse of 'East Asia' may be useful for a transnational approach to world literature which focuses on the criticism of all kinds of centrism by foregrounding the concepts of othering and de-homogenization. For this I emphasize the attitude and methodology of 'post' which includes the power of othering and de-homogenization. The 'posty' theories such as post-colonialism, post-structuralism, post-nationalism and post-humanism allow us to indicate properly and acutely our aim by means of freer play of thought and at the same time more just definition and practice of our thought; that is, only by embracing both indication and play can we maintain the universal value of world literature. Here we can say that the global and local enterprise of ethics is the fundamental basis of world literature.

  • <창조 101>은 중국 텐센트가 한국 <프로듀스 X 101> 프로그램의 제작권을 매입하여 만든 리얼리티 예능 프로그램이다. 이 프로그램은 양성 대상의 미완성성, 양성 목표의 지향성, 과정의 성장성, 결정자의 국민성 등 네 가지 특징을 가지고 있다. 기획사에서 연습생을 키우는 과정을 프로그램을 통해 연습생 개인의 후면영역(back region)과 연예계의 후면영역을 전면영역(front region)으로 전환시켜 대중들에게 공개하였다. 이는 시청자들에게 기분 전환(diversion), 대인관계(personal relation) 유지와 자아 인정(personal identity) 등 효용 가치가 있으므로 주목과 인기를 많이 얻었다. 이러한 아이돌 양성 프로그램은 오디션 리얼리티 예능 프로그램의 발전에 좋은 귀감을 제공해 주었다.

동성애와 유토피아 -휘트먼의 『창포』를 중심으로 (Homosexuality and Utopia: A Reading of Whitman's Calamus)

  • My essay aims at illustrating Whitman's homosexual vision of utopia with a close reading of his representative homosexual text, Calamus. His expansive self is based upon his intimate contact with the world and is almost always drawn to a wider vision of community in which different individuals share the locus of commonness and reach beyond their empirical boundaries. While foregrounding the contingent and the singular, Whitman forges bonds with other people through a series of ecstatic moments that carry us into the public sphere and common interests. Contrary to the current Whitman studies, his homosexual text doesn't repress contingency in order to celebrate the universal, but fully develops the commensurability among diverse historical agents. Whitman knows well the social taboos and inhibitions at the time of national crisis and expansion, but keeps imagining the world where homosexuality plays a central and significant role in founding a democratic solidarity and achieving a desirable social structure. His ideal of America is not a deferred wish for the future, but a concrete vision that can be achieved here and now, realized by the spontaneous bonding and instant attraction among free men. Instead of interpreting history or suggesting practical alternatives, he keeps questioning the dominant ideologies and the given orders of social control, and suggests a free and open relationship among men where no exterior power or mediating other intervenes. His utopian vision is radical as well as ideal, in that it rejects the interventions of the power structure and its institutions and courageously inscribes his homosexuality in the process of writing about and reading his contemporary America. As a predecessor of a homosexual utopian vision of America, Whitman has inspired many later poets, showing a possibility of infusing a homosexual identity into a radical imaging of the nation and its future.

마리안 무어의 시적 기교와 도덕성 (The Poetic Techniques and Morality of Marianne Moore)

  • As a poet, a reviewer of books, and an editor of a major literary journal, Marianne Moore participated in aesthetic revolution which invented the American poetry of the twentieth century. Of all the modernists, she was one of the few truly technical originals, and became an endearing mascot of poetry. Innately attentive to detail, Moore wrote a myriad of poems about animal and plant subjects, and set out to develope and secure her own particular paradigm for modernist poetic and the poetry of objective and scientific description. Foregrounding a mind scientifically trained, Moore used her verse to demonstrate a means by which to see the reality beyond the obvious. Ironically enough, however, a central difficulty with understanding Moore's poetry lies with her concern for such scientific or surface description and precision. In order to understand Moore's poetry fully, it is of special necessity to appreciate relativity among the seemingly disparate entities such as science and literature, as Moore herself did. This paper explores the way in which the poetic techniques of Moore substantiate her sense of morality that underlies the creation of her poetry. Rather than merely addressing her artistic genius or craftsmanship as a modernist poet, Moore's methods engage the power of imagination, magic, lifting the human spirit and eschewing anthropocentric perspectives. For Moore, the poet's magic comes by diligence. In so doing, as I would argue here, Moore draws on the nature of language, especially what Bakhtin insisted with his notions of polyphony and carnival. By introducing openness to various perspectives and meanings in her verse, Moore succeeds in maintaining her own sense of creativity while continuing to acknowledge morality. In a similar skein, her use of active verbs in animal poems and the kaleidoscopic descriptions demonstrate how Moore accommodates imagination and reality, and form and content.

활자와 이미지로 읽는 할리우드 -1920년대 조선극장의 영화관 프로그램과 미국 '특작'영화 경쟁 (Hollywood in Print -Movie Programmes of a Korean Theater in Ethnically Segregated Kyǒngsǒng in the 1920s and the Reception of Hollywood Prestige Pictures)

  • 본 논문은 초창기 스튜디오 시스템의 설립과 함께 본격적으로 상품화한 미국영화와 할리우드라는 산업적 표상이 1920년대 경성의 조선인 극장가에 수용되었던 한 양상을 검토한다. 특히, 고급영화상설관을 지향했던 조선극장의 영화관 프로그램과 홍보 전략에 초점을 맞추어 특작영화 수입을 둘러싼 조선인 상영업자들의 경쟁을 살펴보고 그와 함께 초래된 관객성 분화의 단초를 추적하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위한 본 논문의 구성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제작비가 많이 투입된 특작영화 제작의 역사적, 경제적 배경을 할리우드 거대 영화사들이 이익을 극대화하기 위해 추구했던 규모의 경제를 통해 비교영화사적 관점에서 살펴보고, 영화라는 상품이 브랜드가 되고, 계획된 홍보와 마케팅을 바탕으로 전략적으로 판매될 수밖에 없었던 경제적 동기를 분석할 것이다. 둘째, 경성의 조선인 극장 가운데, 가장 적극적으로 장편영화로의 이행을 감행했던 조선극장이 미국 파라마운트 회사의 세련되고 고급스러운 브랜드 인지도를 전용하여 고급상설관으로서 차별적인 정체성을 형성하려 했던 노력을 주보와 전단지 읽기를 통해 재구성한다. 기존의 일제 강점기 영화와 극장문화 연구에서 홍보와 마케팅의 역할은 단편적인 언급 외에는 상대적으로 연구가 미진한 영역이었다. 본 논문은 주보와 전단지가 수행한 홍보와 매개의 기능에 주목하여, 활자와 이미지를 통한 할리우드 특작 영화 '읽기'를 시도한다. 주보와 전단지는 영화를 홍보하고, 관객에게 영화 선택을 도울 수 있는 정보를 제공하기 위해 상영업자들이 주도적으로 발행한 선전 홍보물이다. 개봉될 영화에 대한 줄거리와 그 밖의 다양한 내용을 글과 이미지를 이용해 구현했던 인쇄물은 관객들의 영화'보기'를 보완하는 독립적인 '읽기'의 매체이자 영화상품의 유통과정의 양쪽 스펙트럼에 존재하는 생산과 수용을 연결하는 매개적인 매체이기도 했다.
