  • This study investigates the possibility of seasonal prediction for tropical cyclone activity in the western North Pacific by using a dynamical modeling approach. We use data from the SMIP/HFP (Seasonal Prediction Model Inter-comparison Project/Historical Forecast Project) experiment with the Korea Meteorological Administration's GDAPS (Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System) T106 model, focusing our analysis on model-generated tropical cyclones. It is found that the prediction depends primarily on the tropical cyclone (TC) detecting criteria. Additionally, a scaling factor and a different weighting to each ensemble member are found to be essential for the best predictions of summertime TC activity. This approach indeed shows a certain skill not only in the category forecast but in the standard verifications such as Brier score and relative operating characteristics (ROC).

  • As the number of wind farms operating has increased, the interest of the central unit commitment and dispatch for wind power has increased as well. Wind power forecast is necessary for effective power system management and operation with high wind power penetrations. This paper presents the centralized wind power forecasting method, which is a forecast to combine all wind farms in the area into one, using time series models. Also, this paper proposes a prediction model modified with wind forecast error compensation. To demonstrate the improvement of wind power forecasting accuracy, the proposed method is compared with persistence model and new reference model which are commonly used as reference in wind power forecasting using Jeju Island data. The results of case studies are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed wind power forecasting method.

  • To predict deep excavation wall movements is important in the urban areas considering the cost and the safety in construction. Failing to estimate deep excavation wall movements in advance causes too many problems in the projects. The purpose of this study is to propose the forecast model of deep excavation wall movements using artificial neural networks. The data of the Deep Excavation Wall Movements which were done form Long research is used of Artificial neural networks training and apply the real construction work measured data to the Artificial neural networks model. Applying the artificial neural networks to forecast the deep excavation wall movements can significantly contribute to identifying and preventing the accident in the overall construction work.

  • UK Met Office Unified Model (UM) is a grid model applicable for both global and regional model configurations. The Met Office has developed a 4D-Var data assimilation system, which was implemented in the global forecast system on 5 October 2004. In an effort to improve its Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) system, Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has adopted the UM system since 2008. The aim of this study is to provide the basic information on the effects of satellite data assimilation on UM performance by conducting global satellite data denial experiments. Advanced Tiros Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS), Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) data, Global Positioning System Radio Occultation (GPSRO) data, Air Craft (CRAFT) data, Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) data were assimilated in the UM global system. The contributions of assimilation of each kind of satellite data to improvements in UM performance were evaluated using analysis data of basic variables; geopotential height at 500 hPa, wind speed and temperature at 850 hPa and mean sea level pressure. The statistical verification using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) showed that most of the satellite data have positive impacts on UM global analysis and forecasts.

  • Initialization of the global seasonal forecast system is as much important as the quality of the embedded climate model for the climate prediction in sub-seasonal time scale. Recent studies have emphasized the important role of soil moisture initialization, suggesting a significant increase in the prediction skill particularly in the mid-latitude land area where the influence of sea surface temperature in the tropics is less crucial and the potential predictability is supplemented by land-atmosphere interaction. This study developed a new soil moisture initialization method applicable to the KMA operational seasonal forecasting system. The method includes first the long-term integration of the offline land surface model driven by observed atmospheric forcing and precipitation. This soil moisture reanalysis is given for the initial state in the ensemble seasonal forecasts through a simple anomaly initialization technique to avoid the simulation drift caused by the systematic model bias. To evaluate the impact of the soil moisture initialization, two sets of long-term, 10-member ensemble experiment runs have been conducted for 1996~2009. As a result, the soil moisture initialization improves the prediction skill of surface air temperature significantly at the zero to one month forecast lead (up to ~60 days forecast lead), although the skill increase in precipitation is less significant. This study suggests that improvements of the prediction in the sub-seasonal timescale require the improvement in the quality of initial data as well as the adequate treatment of the model systematic bias.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a short-term precipitation-streamflow coupling method for real-time river flow forecast. The coupled method is based on the RDAPS model for precipitation and atmospheric simulation and the SFM model for streamflow simulation. The selected study area is the 2,703-km$^2$ Soyang River basin with outlet at Soyang dam site. The rainfall-runoff event from 18 to 24 July 2003 is selected for the performance test of predicted precipitation and streamflow. It can be seen that the simulated basin-scale precipitation from the RDAPS can be useable as an input for SFM hydrologic model. Short-term hydrometeorological simulations using the RDAPS and SFM model were well captured important hydrometeorological characteristics in this study area. It is concluded that atmospheric precipitation forecast would be useful for streamflow forecast.

  • The traditional simple extrapolation type short term quantitative rainfall forecast can not realize the evolution of rainfall generating weather system. To overcome the drawback of the linear extrapolation type rainfall forecasting model, the history of a weather system from sequential weather radar information and a polynomial regression technique were used to generate forecast fileds of x-directional, y-directional velocities and radar reflectivity which considered the nonlinear behavior related to the evolution of weather systems. Results demonstrated that test statistics of forecasts using the developed model is better than that of 2-CAPPI forecast. However there is still a large room to improve the forecast of spatial and temporal evolution of local storms since the model is not based on a fully physical approach but a statistical approach.

  • The Urban Canopy Model (UCM) implemented in WRF model is applied to improve urban meteorological forecast for fine-scale (about 1-km horizontal grid spacing) simulations over the city of Seoul. The results of the surface air temperature and wind speed predicted by WRF-UCM model is compared with those of the standard WRF model. The 2-m air temperature and wind speed of the standard WRF are found to be lower than observation, while the nocturnal urban canopy temperature from the WRF-UCM is superior to the surface air temperature from the standard WRF. Although urban canopy temperature (TC) is found to be lower at industrial sites, TC in high-intensity residential areas compares better with surface observation than 2-m temperature. 10-m wind speed is overestimated in urban area, while urban canopy wind (UC) is weaker than observation by the drag effect of the building. The coupled WRF-UCM represents the increase of urban heat from urban effects such as anthropogenic heat and buildings, etc. The study indicates that the WRF-UCM contributes for the improvement of urban weather forecast such nocturnal heat island, especially when an accurate urban information dataset is provided.

  • We developed an age-based spawner-recruit model incorporating environmental variables to forecast stock biomass and recruits of pelagic fish in this study. We applied the model to the Tsushima stock of jack mackerel, which is shared by Korea and Japan. The stock biomass of jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) around Korean waters ranged from 141 thousand metric tons (mt) and 728 thousand mt and recruits ranged from 27 thousand mt to 283 thousand mt. We hind-casted the stock biomass to evaluate the model performance and robustness for the period of 1987~2009. It was found that the model has been useful to forecast stock biomass and recruits for the period of the lifespan of fish species. The model is also capable of forecasting the long-term period, assuming a certain climatic regime.

  • Forecasting the long-term water demand is important in the plan of water supply system because the location and capacity of water facilities are decided according to it. To forecast the long-term water demand, the existing method based on lpcd and population has been usually used. But, these days the trend among the variation of water demand has been disappeared, so expressing other variation of it is needed to forecast correct water demand. To accomplish it, we introduced the System Dynamics method to consider total connections of water demand factor. Firstly, the factors connected with water demand were divided into three sectors(water demand, industry, and population sectors), and the connections of factors were set with multiple regression model. And it was compared to existing method. The results are as followings. The correlation efficients are 0.330 in existing model and 0.960 in SD model and MAE are 3.96% in existing model and 1.68% in SD model. So, it is proved that SD model is superior to the existing model. To forecast the long-term water demand, scenarios were made with variations of employment condition, economic condition and consumer price indexes and forecasted water demands in 2012. After all scenarios were performed, the results showed that it was not needed to increase the water supply ability in Seoul.
