  • The response of forage yield was studied with various growth indices to develop yield model and to determine optimum cutting time in three cultivars of orchardgrass. 1. Number of tiller per plant was the highest at 3rd cutting stage. But, it was decreased rapidly at 4th cutting stage. Leaf Area Index (LAI) was the highest at 3rd cutting stage. LAI was increased slowly during 15 days to 20 days after cutting and thereafter increased rapidly. 2. In dry matter yield over cutting stages, 1st cutting and 3rd cutting stages were higher yield than others. Change of dry matter yield was similar to that of LAI in all cutting stages. 3. Leaf Elongation Rate (LER) and Specific Leaf Weight (SLW) were reached to maximum at 20 to 25 days and 25 to 30 days after cutting, respectively. 4. Dry matte yield was highly correlated with LAI (r-0.905)and with CGR (r-0.962) over three cultivars. Also, LAI was significantly with LER. The best-fit yield model was obtained in multiple regression equation which included both dependent variables of LAI and CGR. 5. Optimum cutting times which were determined by the relationships between D.M. yield and LAI, and between D.M. yield and CGR, were ranged from 32 days to 36 days depend on each cutting stages.

Effect of Cut on Forage Production and Grain Yield of Naked Barley Cultivars (예취가 쌀보리 품종의 청초생산과 종실수량에 미치는 영향)

  • Eight naked barley cultivars were grown in three production systems to select proper cultivars for dual production of forage and grain and to determine production system x cultivar interactions. In the forage systems. barley was seeded on September 27 and October 17, harvested for forage on November 1. December 10 and February 12 from the September 27 planting (forage system I) and on December 10 and February 12 from the October 17 seeding(forage system II). In the grain-only system, barley was planted on November 5. In forage system I, oven-dried forage yields of eight cultivars ranged 195 to 296kg/10a and Saessalbori and Naehanssalbori yielded significantly higher than the other cultivars recording 280 and 296kg/ l0a, respectively. In forage system II, oven-dried forage yields of eight cultivars ranged 106 to 143kg/10a showing no significant difference among cultivars. Production system x cultivar interactions were significant for lodging at maturity, powdery mildew rating, 1000 kernel weight and grain yield. Leaf area index and biomass at heading, no. of spikes per $m^2$, no. of kernels per spike and test weight were not affected by the production system. Forage utilization delayed heading by 3 days and reduced culm length, spike length, lodging due to heavy rain on May 5 and lodging at maturity except for Songhagbori and Naehanssalbori. Forage utilization did not significantly affect grain yield from the September 27 planting but reduced 9% from the October 17 planting. while Saessalbori and Hyangcheonggwa 1 yielded significantly less than in the grain-only system. Songhagbori appears to be a proper cultivar for dual production of forage and grain in Cheju, considering forage and grain yields. and lodging and powdery mildew resistance.

Comparative Yield and Nutritive Value of Oat Varieties as Fresh-Cut Forage (청예사료용 연맥품종의 수량 및 사료가치 비교 연구)

  • The experiment reported here was conducted at Suweon and Sunghwan. to evaluate desirable agronomic characteristics, forage yield and quality of nine introduced oat (Avena sativa L.) cultivars in comparison with the control cultivar Cayuse during the fall and spring seasons for three years. Speed oat and G-sprinter showed earlier in maturity than the control cultivar Cayuse, but Taiho, Zenshin and Almighty were recorded as late types. Taiho, Hay oat and Swallow tended to more lodging than the control cultivar under rainy growing conditions and Taiho, Zenshin and Hay oat were more susceptible to barley yellow dwarf virus among the cultivars tested. At Suweon, the early type cultivars Speed oat and G-sprinter significantly outyielded the control cultivar Cayuse over the 3 years of the fall experiment, but no significant forage yield was found between the early type cultivars and the control in the spring experiment except for 1991 At Sunghwan, the early type Speed oat and late types Almighty and Zenshin significantly outyielded the control in the fall experiment of 1991, but the 3 years of experiment showed no significant difference in the forage yield of oat cultivars in the spring experiment. Over the 3 years of the fall and spring experiments at both Suweon and Sunghwan. the crude protein (CP) content and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of the early types Speed oat and G-sprinter were lower than those of the control and late types, but the acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents of the early types Speed oat and G-sprinter were slightly higher than those of the control and late types. Results of this experiment indicate that the early type oat cultivars tended to higher forage yield than the late types when sown in the fall, but no cultivar differences in dry matter yield were found when sown in the spring.

The Study on Double Cropping System for Organic Forage Production in Middle Part of Korea (중부지역에서 유기조사료 생산에 적합한 작부체계에 관한 연구)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the selection of regional double cropping system for production of organic forage in middle part of Korea. The species of forage crop used in this experiment were corn, $sorghum\;{\times}\;sudangrass$ hybrid and japanese millet for summer crops and rye and Italian ryegrass for winter crops. $Sorghum\;{\times}\;sudangrass$ hybrid showed higher DM (dry matter) and TDN (total digestible nutrient) yield than that of corn. Dry matter yield of corn decreased to 56% that of control because of weed. In winter crops, DM and TDN yield of rye is higher than that of Italian ryegrass. Rye was more adequate to produce organic forage in middle part of Korea. We could not find out the difference of nutrient value between each treatments. It means that the amount of nutrient is affected by DM productivity of each crop. The result of this study indicated that $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrid (summer crop) and rye (winter crop) cropping system could be recommended as producing high yield of organic forage in middle part of Korea.

Agronomic Characteristics, Forage Quality, and Dry Matter Yield of Forage Winter Rye Cultivars (사료용 호밀 보급품종의 주요 생육특성과 수량성)

  • This experiment was carried out to classify heading date of forage rye cultivars, and study agronomic characteristics, dry matter yield per ha and forage quality of winter rye cultivars in Suwon for 2 year from 2002 to 2003. The earliest cultivars among forage winter rye cultivars were Olhomil and Vitagrazer, which the heading date was April 21. The latest cultivar was Danko, which was May 5. Koolgrazer was April 26 and Homil 22 was April 30, respectively. Therefore, we classified the cultivars into three groups according to their heading date. The earliest group includes Olhomil, Vitagrazer, Paldanghomil, the middle group includes 5 cultivars which are Koolgrazer, Barrgazer, Maton, Wintergrazer and Homil22, and the latest group contains Humbolt and Danko. The number of tiller per $m^{2}$ of most cultivars were more than 1,000. The cultivar which has lowest tiller was Humbolt, which dry matter yield was the largest, and its tiller was 789. The lodging happened after each precipitation. Danko was the cultivar that has lowest lodging frequency. There has been little disease and insect and the difference in the quality of each cultivar. The yield of dry matters per ha of Humbolt was increased $123\%$, Vita grazer $121\%$, Maton $113\%$ comparing the standard cultivar, Kool grazer of 12,409kg, and Homil 22 was almost the same with the standard cultivar.

Effects of Harvesting Time on Yield and Forage Value of a Winter Wheat Cultivar 'Cheongwoo' (청우밀의 수확시기가 생산성 및 조사료 가치에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to raise the self-sufficiency rate of domestic forage and obtain informations necessary for production of high-quality winter forage, forage yield and feeding value were analyzed in the above-ground parts of a winter wheat 'Cheongwoo' harvested at five different growth stages, and the appropriate harvest time was determined. The yield increased until 30 days after heading, and then decreased afterwards. The proportion of spike in the above-ground part was less than 40% until 30 days after heading, but increased to more than 60% afterward. At 30 days after heading, the protein content and relative feed value (RFV) also reached peaks, while acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were low. The mineral nutrient contents are within the standard range required for feeding ruminant livestock or do not exceed the maximum allowable level. Therefore, the best time to harvest above-ground parts of a winter wheat 'Cheongwoo' for use as a forage for feeding ruminant livestock is around 30 days after heading, when considering forage yield and feed values. As a result it would match well in time with the transplantation of rice seedlings or the sowing of rice-alternative field crops in the double cropping system.

  • To determine optimal sowing time of forage rape in southern areas of Korea, forage rape cv. Velox, the highest yielding variety among seventeen introduced varieties of forage rape, was grown under five different sowing times. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Yield components such as plant length, number of branches and number of leaves etc. were highest at the sowing time of Sep. 14 and Sep. 24. 2. Plants sown at Sep. 14 and Sep. 24 also showed highest'fresh and dry matter yield. 3. As plants were grown under later sowing time, they showed higher values in content of crude protein and lower values in contents of crude fiber such as NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin. 4. There was no relationship between variation of IVDMD and sowing time. Plants sown at Sep. 14 and Sep. 24 showed highest digestible dry matter yields.

Studies on the Seeding and Harvesting Dates of Early and late Maturing Varieties of Forage Rye I. Yield and nutritive value influenced by seeding dates (조 , 만생 사초용 호밀의 파종 및 수확시기에 관한 연구 I. 파종시기별 수량 및 사료가치)

  • In order to reduce the problems from overlapping between rye harvest and maize seeding dates, and also to improve the growth, productivity and nutritive value of rye (Secale cereale L.), an experiment was carried out to determine the variety effect of rye on the forage production system, and seeding date effect on the yield and quality of rye. The experiment was conducted in the forage testing field of S.N.U., Suweon, from September 1988 to May 1989. The dry matter and in vitro digestible dry matter yields of rye harvested 14 April were 5.2 t and 4.6 t/ha with an early maturing rye variety, Winter more, but 3.1 t and 2.8 t/ha were obtained with a late maturing rye variety, Kodiak. When seeding date was delayed, a significant decrease in dry matter yield was observed. ADF and NDF contents, and IVDMD of an early maturing rye, Winter more, harvested 14 April were 25.6, 44.8 and 81.9 %, but those of a late maturing rye, Kodiak, were 21.1, 39.5 and 88.9 %, respectively. ADF and NDF contents of rye were increased as the seeding date was delayed, but ail forage ryes from different seeding dates as well as varieties were recorded as the 1st grade proposed by market hay grades. The dry matter and in vitro digestible dry matter yields of rye harvested at 80 %heading stage were significantly decreased as delayed seeding date, but no significant differences were found between early and late maturing varieties. No differences in ADF and NDF contents, and IVDMD of the rye harvested at 80% heading stage were found among the treatments, but all forage ryes were evaluated as the 4 th grade proposed by market hay grades.

파종량과 제초제 처리가 수단그라스계 잡종의 수량과 잡초억제에 미치는 영향 ( Effect of Seeding Rate and Herbicides on the Yield and Weed Control of Sorghum-Sudangrass Hybrid ( Sorghum bicolr ( L. ) Moench ) )

  • This experiment was carried out to find the effect of seeding rates and herbicides on the weed control, yield and crude protein of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). The variety used in the present study was Pioneer 988. Two different seeding rates were 25 kg/ha and 50 kg/ha and five weed control treatments were weedy check, hand weeded check, alachlor, alachlor+simazine, and simazine of preemergence application. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. Forage yield was not influenced by seeding rates. There was no significant difference between forage yield from 25 kg/ha and from 50 kg/ha of seeding rates. But weedy plots showed higher yield from the high seeding rate. Alachlor+simazine treatment showed the greatest yield among the weed control treatments. But there was no difference among the hand weeded treatment, simazine treatment, and alachlor+simazine treatment. 2. Seeding rates did not affect weed yield, but weedy plots showed the tendancy toward higher weed yield from the low seeding rate. Alachlor+simazing preemergence application showed the most effective weed control. But there was no significant difference in weed yield among the treatments of the hand weeded, alachlor+simazine and simazine. The weed yield in alachlor treatment was significantly higher than other three treatments. 3. The height of plant was shortest on the weedy plots and the longest height was obtained from the alachlor+simazine application. But in the first harvest the height was reduced by herbicides. Seeding rates did not affect the plant height. But the height was slightly taller under the low seeding rate than under the high seeding rate. 4. The percent crude protein of the forage did not affected by two seeding rates. Simazine treatments increased the percent crude protein and total crude protein yield. Simazine and alachlor+simazine application showed the significantly higher percent crude protein than hand weeded and alachlor treatments. Simazine increased the percent crude protein without reduction of forage yield. 5. Whereas the number of original stand was greater in the high seeding rate, the number of tillers per stand was higher in the low seeding rate. Weed reduced the number of stands and tillers. There was no significant indifference among the weed control treatments. It is concluded from above results that when sorghum-sudangrass hybrids are broadcasted for forage, 25 kg/ha rate of seeding is appropriate and alachlor+simazine treatment is most effective on weed control, maximum forage yield, and high percent crude protein.
