  • In Korea, the traditional main food is rice There is a shortage of food, though the land is uesd intensively. The Koreans produce mainly rice its yield is very much higher than other crops. This leads to the comsumption of one type of food and, hence, to an unbalanced diet. Since 1962, Korean income has been going up rapidly, and the demand for animal protein has also increased. In order to solve the probem, the government decided to develop the dairy industry, because this would enable the population to consume more animal protein, and there is weak competion between rice and milk production.

Can Auto-ID make Trade Stable between Korea and China?

  • As increasing trade through the world, especially in food, asymmetry of information can make the trade shrink. With the industrial development, Korea's agriculture had shrunk dramatically. By the result of the nation's industrial restructuring, over than 3/4 of Korea food consumption comes from abroad. And China is an important source of agricultural product to Korea. Increasing family income and increasing importing food consumption, Korean consumers have been interested in food safety. Especially. after experiencing several cases like struggle for safety of GMO food, poultry influenza, lead contained Chinese fish import, mad cow disease, cheating origin, etc. Obviously, those unreliable cases will hinder the increase of world free trade as well as the trust of two countries. Furthermore, distrust will be a cause of adverse selection. So, it need to find a way to solve the distrust which caused by asymmetry of information. And automatic identification procedures can help mitigate asymmetry of information in trade. And it will make Korean consumers can avoid adverse selection. This paper suggests adoption of Auto ID to encourage agricultural trade between Korea and China.

Effect of Dietary Folate Intakes on Serum Folate Levels of Pregnant and Lactating Women (임신부와 수유부의 엽산섭취량이 혈청엽산농도에 미치는 영향)

  • Dietary folate intake and serum folate levels were measured in 26 pregnant, 25 lactating, and 17 non-pregnant, non-lactating women. Dietary folate comsumption was estimated by calculating folate intake based on the information obtained from food frequency quesionnaires and serum folate levels were determined microbiologically using Lactobacillus casei. The total folate (from food and supplements) intakes of pregnant and lactating women were 326.9ug and 407.9ug, which was significantly higher than that of the non-pregnant, non-lactating women(139.5ug). However, with regard to food folate intake, there were no differences among the three groups (160ug for pregnant women, 143.4ug for lactating women). Forty-two percent and 36% of the pregnant and lactating subjects, respectively, were found to be taking commercially available nutritional supplements containing folate. The concentrations of folate in these supplements were in the range of 83ug~1, 000ug per tablet. For lactating women, serum folate levels were significantly higher when folate supplements were voluntarily used. The amount of folate intake was positively correlated with the serum folate levels in pregnant women, but not in lactaing women and non-pregnant, non-lactating women. Serum folate levels were negatively correlated with the ages of the pregnant women, and for lactating women, serum folate was positively correlated with their body weights.

Analysis of Inorganic Anions in Various Drinking Waters by Capillary Electrophoresis

  • The quantitation of inorganic anions in various drinking waters were investigated using capillary electrophoresis(CE) and the results were compared with ion chromatography(IC). With CE, in contrast to IC, was demonstrated rapid analysis, good efficiency, a low detection limit and the low comsumption of a solvent and samples. CE analysis was used 5 mM sodium chromate(pH 8.0) containing 20 mM tetraalkylammoniumbromide at -25kV applied voltage with indirect UV detection at 254 nm. This results in exceedingly short analysis time within 3 min. with efficiencies approaching 200,000 theoretical plates. The coefficients of variants of migration time are less than 0.8% and those of peak area are less than 2.3%. Detection limits for quantitative determination were 300 ppb-50 ppm level. These optimum conditions are applicable to various samples without pretreatment.

Comsumption Aspects of Fermented in Busan Yangsan and Ulsan -II. Traditional fermented Soybean Products - (부산, 양산, 울산 지역의 발효식품 소비현황 -II. 장류-)

  • To investigate the consumption pattern of traditional fermented soybean products a survey was con-ducted to the subjects composed of 308 housewives in busan yangsan and ulsan. Doenjang was rated among one of the often-used traditional foods in Korean meal preparation. 67.2% fo the respondents used Doenjang once or twice a week and 22.7% every day and by the educational level the lower in education level used more. Doenjang has been prepared by housewives themselves(46.9%) or by their relatives(30.7%) for the most important reason of good taste and by purchasing of commercial products(22.4%) for convenience. By regional groups the frequency to use commercial products of Doenjang was higher in Ulsan and the younger or the higher in education level showed the higher frequency. The consump-tion pattern of Gochujang was very similar to that of Doenjang. Chunggukjang which has peculiar flav-our showed very low consumption with being rarely used or having not eaten by 60.3% of subjects. Gan-jang was consumed mainly once or twice a week and jin-ganjang was preferred than Guk-ganjang. In the preparing methods Guk-ganjang have been made by housewives themselves(31.0%) by their relativ-es(29.5%) or by purchasing of commercial products(31.0%) and Jin-ganjang mainly by purchasing of commercial products(65.0%) which showed higher consumption frequency of commercial products com-pared with Doenjang and Gochujang.

Evalution of Three Species of Haptophyte Algae for the Culture of the Marine Copepod Tigriopus japonicus (해산 요각류 Tigriopus japonicus 개체군 성장에 미치는 착편모조의 영향)

  • Three haptophyte algae, Isochrysis galbana, Prymnesium parvum and P. patelliferum were offered to the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus as food. Growth rate of larvae, egg production, mortality and comsumption rates of T. japonicus were measured for each of the haptophyte species offered. The growth rate of larvae, egg production and algal ingestion of T. japonicus fed on P. parvum and P. patelliferum were much lower than those fed on I. galbana and corresponding high mortality rates were also observed during the experimental period. The harmful effects observed during the present study indicate that bloom-forming haptophyte algae, P. parvum and P. patelliferum are not suitable feed species for culture of copepod, T. japonicus.

  • Dehulled and defatted Korean cottonseed flour was extracted with alkaline solution for 30 minutes and had precipitated the crude portein by adjusting pH $1{\sim}12$. The general composition and the amino acid composition of cottonseed protein were analyzed. Crude protein was purified with sephadex G-100 and G-200, and its component had been identified by disc electrophoresis. Toxic gossypol was removed by n-hexane, acetone and other solvents. The results were as follows. (1) pH 5, pH 7 and pH 4 were the best condition of precipitation of curde protein at single, two step and water extraction, respectively. (2) The cottonseed flour which was dehulled and defatted, contained 61.3% of crude protein. (3) The protein which was isolated from cottonseed flour, contained 20% of glutamic acid, and comparatively high levels of essential amino acids. (4) Dehulled cottonseed flour contained 0.97% of total gossypol and could be romoved 70% of total gossypol by extraction with n-hexane. (5) 10-13 bands of water soluble protein were found in disc electrophoresis, and 10-12 bands in protein were isolated by single and two step procedures. (6) The cottonseed protein could be purified by sephadex G-100 and G-200. (7) 10-20% of gossypol-free cottonseed fluor could be used for animal and human comsumption.
