  • This research aimed at providing the direction for future improvement of broadcast subtitle design by identifying the user perception on broadcast subtitles of Terrestrial DMB. First, we contemplated on the existing research about broadcast subtitles. As a result, we found out that broadcast subtitle plays an essential role when watching a program and that the minimization of letters, clear fonts and color arrangement, rearrangement of components were identified as main factors that increase readability. However, the terrestrial DMB user evaluation on image quality, composition, color and brightness was not that positive. In addition, the evaluation on the readability of broadcast subtitle, information transmission, subtitle composition, letter font, number and size of letter was more negative. Developing a subtitle design which considers user convenience and suits terrestrial DMB screens in aspects of broadcast subtitle form and composition, limit of information, clearness and size of the letter is required.

  • Web pages with complex layout and small font size do not display well on large screen display such as TV because it has limited capabilities: long distance view, passive user attitude, limited input device like a legacy remote controller. We have designed and implemented new semantic zoom browsing facilities to support effective navigation on Internet-connected digital television with limited capabilities. Our browser performs partitioning of an HTML document content into semantic blocks. Semantic blocks present summarized information with more readable style and modified layout for optimal reading and browsing. Individual blocks can be selected by the user and zoomed in more detail information by the user. The scrolling on large display device needs more user interaction. Our browser modifies the layout of an HTML document with removing horizontal scrolling and minimizing vertical scrolling. This method allows users to easily view the web page by converting into optimal reading style and layout and to easily seek the information just with zooming.

  • This paper proposes how to support various media on online conversational activity using XML(extensible Markup Language). The method converts media information into XML based messages and handles alike conventional text based messages. The XML based messages are unified to an XML document, and then a HTML document is generated using the XML and an XSLT documents in a server. A user in each client can play or present media through the hyperlink that is associated media information on the HTML document. The suggested method supports use of various media (text, image, audio, video, documents, etc) and efficient maintenance of font size, color, and style on messages according to extension and modification of XML tags. For application, this paper implemented the system to support media that has client and server architecture on online conversational activity. A user in each client inputs text or media based message using JAVA applet and servlet on the system, and conversational messages on every users' interfaces are automatically updated whenever a user inputs new message. Media on conversational messages are played or presented according to a user's click on hyperlink. Applications for the media presentation are as follows : distance learning, online game, collaboration, etc.

  • Kinetic typography has been suggested to express emotions in computer-mediated communication (CMC) by empowering static texts with dynamic attributes, where conversations occur primarily in text-based forms. In this work, we investigate whether pre-defined kinetic typography effects are capable of delivering emotions, and further, which specific attributes of kinetic typography arouse such emotions. The results show that emotional response of users were corresponding to the emotions intended by experts, indicating that pre-defined kinetic typography is an applicable way to express emotions consistently in CMC. Also, results demonstrate some key attributes that derive certain levels of mood and energy respectively. Energy level turned out to be affected by the font size, transparency, direction of movement, amount of movement, velocity, and acceleration of the text, while mood level was influenced by the transparency, direction of movement, regularity in movement, and speed of the text.

  • A word cloud is a visualization of word frequency in a given text. The importance of each word is shown in font size or color. This plot is useful for quickly perceiving the most prominent words and for locating a word alphabetically to determine its relative prominence. With dynamic graphics, we can find the changing pattern of prominent words and their frequencies according to the changing selection of chapters in a given text. We can define the word frequency matrix. In this matrix, rows are chapters in text and columns are ranks corresponding to word frequency about the words in the text. We can draw the word frequency matrix plot with this matrix. Dynamic graphic can indicate the changing pattern of the word frequency matrix according to the changing selection of the range of ranks of words. We execute an English Bible text visualization using word clouds and dynamic graphics technology.

  • The studies of document recongnition have been focused mainly on Korean documents. But most of documents composed of Korean and other characters. So, in this paper, we propose the document recognition system that can recognize the multi-size, multi font and mixed type characters. We have utilized a large scale network model, "CombNET" which consists of a 4 layered network with combstructure. And we propose recognition method that can recognize characters without discrimination of character type. The first layer constitutes a Kohonen's SOFM network which quantizes an input feature vector space into several sub-spaces and the following 2-4 layers constitutes BP network modules which classify input data in each sub-space into specified catagories. An experimental result demonstrated the usefulness of this approach with the recognition rates of 95.6% for the training data. For the mixed type character documents we obtained the recognition rates of 92.6% and recognition speed of 10.3 characters per second.

  • Caption information in news videos can be useful for video indexing and retrieval since it usually suggests or implies the contents of the video very well. In this paper, a new algorithm for extracting and recognizing characters from news video is proposed, without a priori knowledge such as font type, color, size of character. In the process of text region extraction, in order to improve the recognition rate for videos with complex background at low resolution, continuous frames with identical text regions are automatically detected to compose an average frame. The image of the averaged frame is projected to horizontal and vertical direction, and we apply region filling to remove backgrounds to produce the character. Then, K-means color clustering is applied to remove remaining backgrounds to produce the final text image. In the process of character recognition, simple features such as white run and zero-one transition from the center, are extracted from unknown characters. These feature are compared with the pre-composed character feature set to recognize the characters. Experimental results tested on various news videos show that the proposed method is superior in terms of caption extraction ability and character recognition rate.

  • Background: Section 5 of India's tobacco control legislation "Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003"comprehensively prohibits all kinds of tobacco advertisement, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS), but permits advertisments at the point-of-sale (POS) under certain conditions. This provision has been exploited by the tobacco companies to promote their products. Objective: To measure compliance with the provisions of Section 5 of Indian tobacco control legislation (COTPA, 2003) at point of sale. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey using an observation checklist was conducted in 1860 POS across three jurisdictions (Chennai city, District Vadodara and District Mohali) in India. Results: The most common mode of advertisement of tobacco products was product showcasing (51.1%), followed by dangles (49.6%), stickers (33.8%) and boards (27.1%). More than one fourth of POS were found violating legal provisions for displaying advertisement boards in one or other forms (oversized, extended to full body lenth of POS, displayed brandname/packshot and promotional messages). Advertisement boards (16.3%) without health warnings were also found and wherever found, more than 90% health warning were not as per the specification in respect to size, font and background color. Conclusions: Point of sale advertising is aggressively used by the tobacco industry to promote their products. There is an urgent need of effective implementation of a comprehensive ban on tobacco product advertisement, promotion and sponsorship at point of sale.

  • Tagging system is the system that allows internet users to assign new meta-data which is called tag to article, photo, video and etc. for facilitating searching and browsing of web contents. Tag cloud, a visual interface is widely used for browsing tag space. Tag cloud selects the tags with the highest frequency and presents them alphabetically with font size reflecting their popularity. However the conventional tag selection method includes known weaknesses. So, we propose a novel tag selection method Freshness, which helps to find fresh web contents. Freshness is the mean value of Kullback-Leibler divergences between each consecutive change of tag co-occurrence probability distribution. We collected tag data from three web sites, Allblog, Eolin and Technorati and constructed the system, 'Fresh Tag Cloud' which collects tag data and creates our tag cloud. Comparing the experimental results between Fresh Tag Cloud and the conventional one with data from Allblog, our one shows 87.5% less overlapping average, which means Fresh Tag Cloud outperforms the conventional tag cloud.

  • The application of OCR moves from traditional formatted documents to the web document and natural scene images. It is usual that the new applications use not only standard fonts of Myungjo and Godic but also various fonts. The conventional databases which have mainly been constructed with standard fonts have limitations in applying to the new applications. In this paper, we generate 243 image samples for each of 2350 Hangul character classes which differs in font size, quality, and resolution. Additionally each sample was varied according to binarization threshold and rotational transformation. Through this process 2187 samples were generated for each character class. Totally 5,139,450 samples constitutes the printed Hangul character database called the PHD08. In addition, we present the characteristics and recognition performance by an commercial OCR software.
