  • In order to investigate the effects of sulfamonomethoxine (SMM) on thyroid glands in short term administration as medical dose, a total of twenty albino rabbits (mean body weight 1,750g) were selected at random and allotted to control and experimental group. Rabbits in experiment were administered SMM of 50 mg/kg/day for 30 days, and histopathological changes of thyroid glands and the blood levels for T4 and T3 were observed every 5 days. The Results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The thyroid follicles were decreased or obliterated by highly hypertrophic and hyperplastic epithelial cells and the newly formed small follicles contained scanty colloidal materials. These changes revealed increasing tendency in accordance with the experimental days. 2. The blood levels for T4 and T3 of experimental group manifested significantly decreased values than those of control through the experimental term consistently. Finally, above observations suggest that administration of SMM to animals leads thyroid glands to typical hypofunctional hyperplastic goiter.

  • Lymphoid hamartomas are a rare benign disease which can be easily treated by complete surgical excision. They developed most often in the thorax, and can be discovered usually on routine chest X-ray.p But some of them can also be found because of pressure symptoms or the presence of a palpable mass if outside the thorax. We experienced a case of the hyaline-vascular type of lymphoid hamartoma in the left hilum of a 29 year-old Korean male in March, 1979. He was well except intermittent cough and left chest discomfort of a year duration and was treated by resection of the left upper lobe including nodular tumor masses. The histological characteristics were an aggregation of lymphoid follicles composed of concentrically arranged mature lymphocytes with centrally placed thick walled arterioles showing endothelial proliferation and some of them were hyalinized. Between the follicles, there was extensive capillary proliferation and infiltration of numerous lymphocytes, scanty plasma cells and eosinophils.

  • It has been said that thyroid gland controls the function of salivary gland and vice versa. In an attempt to investigate the role of submaxillary gland on the function of thyroid gland, the authors have observed the changes of thyroid gland histologically and histochemically at 70 days after removal of submaxillary gland in rats. The results are as follows: 1. There are no significant changes of thyroid cells after submaxillary gland removal. 2. The colloidal concentration of thyroid follicles is markedly decreased after submaxillary gland removal. 3. The colloids of thyroid follicles show intensive reaction to PAS staining in intact rats, but moderate or minimal reaction in submaxillary removal rats.

  • This report describes a 31-year-old female patient with six impacted teeth. The crowns of the impacted teeth were surrounded with cyst-like lesions with a mixed internal structure and well-defined cortical borders. Microscopic examination of the specimen obtained from the follicle of the left mandibular third molar tooth revealed loose to moderately dense collagenous connective tissue with abundant calcified material and sparse epithelial islands. A diagnosis of multiple calcifying hyperplastic dental follicles was made.

  • The incidence of infertility among individuals of reproductive age has been growing due to genetic and environmental factors, and considerable research efforts are focused on solving this issue. Ovarian development is an overly complex process in the body, involving the interaction between primordial germ cells and gonad somatic cells. However, follicles located in the center of the in vitro ovary are poorly formed owing to ovarian complexity, nutrient deficiency, and signaling deficiency. In the present study, we optimized methods for dissociating gonads and culture conditions for the in vitro generation of miniaturized ovaries. The gonads from embryos were dissociated into cell masses and cultured on a Transwell-COL membrane for 3-5 weeks. Approximately 12 follicles were present per in vitro ovary. We observed that miniaturized ovaries successfully matured to MII oocytes in vitro from 150 to 100 ㎛ gonad masses. This method will be useful for investigating follicle development and oocyte production.
