Cloud meteorological properties over Daegwallyeong mountain area were analyzed for experimental cloud seeding which related to a feasibility study of fog modification. The cloud seeding for fog modification has been refocused to using hygroscopic chemical to dissipate warm fog. In this study, the statistics of fog observations were analyzed and discussed. Fog properties mostly showed the Summer warm fog, the early morning occurrences before to 6 o'clock AM, and 7 to 9 o'clock dissipation in the statistics. In the Spring and Winter season an easterly wind produced cold fog which is good applied with AgI seeding agents. Extrapolation of these results suggests that the suitable seeding method and material for fog modification will be introduced from the actual seeding experiments in the cold and warm fog.
Recently the traffics and transportation hazzards by fog are tremendously Increased. There occurred the greater traffic disaster by Dense Fog of Oct.2006. In this study frequent occurrences of advection fogs centerd over Honam Prov are investigated. Increment of transportation during the Fog period for 1996~2005(decade)are statistically analyzed with Honam Prov.'s fogs. For Honam west coast(Gunsan, Mokpo), inland of Honam(Junju, Gwangju, Suncheon), Honam south coast(Wando, Yepsu), Wind, Dew point, Diff. of air and sea temp. relative humidity are classified between 12 hours before and on time of fog with three Dimensional Analysis System(KLAPS). High frequencies of advection-radiation Fog occurrence in western Coasts except for Suncheon. The application of fog characteristics analyzed by KLAPS for denser fog over the western coast in Fall to Fog prediction and special advisory issues. The advection-radiation fog can occure favorably when the moisture index is less than $2^{\circ}C$, relative humidity is greater than 90%, but the moisture depth is under 1.5 km. In addition when the height of 925 hPa is rising, then fog occurs, but for sinking is disappearing.
The fog water chemistry and deposition in northern Japan were investigated by fog water and throughfall measurements in 2010. Fog water was sampled weekly by an active-string fog sampler at Lake Mashu from May to November. Throughfall measurements were conducted using rain gauges under three deciduous trees along the somma of the lake from August to October. The mean fog deposition rate (flux) was calculated using throughfall data to estimate the total fog water deposition amount for the entire sampling period. $NH_4{^+}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ were the most abundant cation and anion, respectively, in the fog water samples. A mean pH of 5.08 in the fog water, which is higher than those in rural areas in Japan, was observed. The [$NH_4{^+}$]/[$SO{_4}^{2-}$] equivalent ratio in fog water was larger than 1.0 throughout the study period, indicating that $NH_3$ gas was the primary neutralizing agent for fog water acidity. The mean rate and total amount of fog water deposition were estimated as 0.15 mm $h^{-1}$ and 164 mm, respectively. The amounts of nitrogen and sulfate deposition via fog water deposition were corresponded to those reported values of the annual deposition amounts via rainfall.
A fog screen consists of tiny water drops and the viewers see the image transmitted through the fog screen. In contrast to ordinary screens, the viewers can see the actors passing through the image on the fog screen on stage. In this paper, we describe methods to build a top-down fog screen where fog particles generated in top space fall by gravity forming a flat vertical screen. We use a fog generation technique in which fog particles come out of the water surface when ultrasound vibrators immersed in water tank vibrate. We describe how fog particles form a flat screen while coming out of the fog passage tunnel, by generating guiding winds beside the fog screen. This technique utilizes the principle that fog particles are generated on the surface of a water tank by an ultrasonic vibrator placed in a water tank. The technique of forming a guiding wind on both sides of the passage exit where the fog comes out and the design and manufacturing method of the fog screen generating device are described so that the generated fog group can maintain one plane.

To investigate the occurrence characteristics and types of fog on the Korean Peninsula over the past three years (2020 to 2022), data from 96 synoptic meteorological observatories and 21 ocean buoys were collected and analyzed. We included precipitation fog, which occurs after precipitation events, and cloud-base lowering fog, which is caused by the development of lower-level clouds, with a total six subtypes of fog. In the case of cloud-base lowering fog, the occurrence frequency at 2.6% was not high at 2.6%, but the duration of low visibility below 200 m was very long at 6.9 hours. The seasonal frequency of fog is low in spring and winter, high in summer over islands and coastal areas, and high in autumn over inland areas. The frequency of inland fog, which is characterized by high radiation fog and dense fog, requires attention in terms of transportation safety, with an occurrence time of 0500 LST to 1000 LST. Therefore, systematic analysis of precipitation fog and cloud-base lowering, as well as radiation and advection fog, is required in the analysis of recognizing fog as a disaster and causing transportation disorders.
For the safety of sea, it is important to monitor sea fog, one of the dangerous meteorological phenomena which cause marine accidents. To detect and monitor sea fog, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data which is capable to provide spatial distribution of sea fog has been used. The previous automatic sea fog detection algorithms were focused on detecting sea fog using Terra/MODIS only. The improved algorithm is based on the sea fog detection algorithm by Wu and Li (2014) and it is applicable to both Terra and Aqua MODIS data. We have focused on detecting spring season sea fog events in the Yellow Sea. The algorithm includes application of cloud mask product, the Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI), the STandard Deviation test using infrared channel ($STD_{IR}$) with various window size, Temperature Difference Index(TDI) in the algorithm (BTCT - SST) and Normalized Water Vapor Index (NWVI). Through the calculation of the Hanssen-Kuiper Skill Score (KSS) using sea fog manual detection result, we derived more suitable threshold for each index. The adjusted threshold is expected to bring higher accuracy of sea fog detection for spring season daytime sea fog detection using MODIS in the Yellow Sea.
Brightness temperature (BT) difference between sea fog and sea surface is small, because the top height of fog is low. Therefore, it is very difficult to detect sea fog with infrared (IR) channels in the nighttime. To overcome this difficulty, we have developed a new algorithm for detection of sea fog that consists in three tests. Firstly, both stratus and sea fog were discriminated from the other clouds by using the difference between BTs $3.7{\mu}m$ and $11{\mu}m$. Secondly, stratus occurring at a level higher than sea fog was removed when the difference between cloud top temperature and sea surface temperature (SST) is smaller than 3 K. In this process, we used daily SST data from AMSR-E microwave measurements that is available even in the presence of cloud. Then, the SST was converted to $11{\mu}m$ BT based on the regressed relationship between AMSR-E SST and MTSAT-1R $11{\mu}m$ BT at 1733 UTC over clear sky regions. Finally, stratus was further removed by using the homogeneity test based on the difference in cloud top texture between sea fog and stratus. Comparison between the retrievals from our algorithm and that from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) algorithm, shows that the KMA algorithm often misconceived sea fog as stratus, resulting in underestimating the occurrence of sea fog. Monthly distribution of sea fog over northeast Asia in 2008 was derived from the proposed algorithm. The frequency of sea fog is lowest in winter, and highest in summer especially in June. The seasonality of the sea fog occurrence between East and West Sea was comparable, while it is not clearly identified over South Sea. These results would serve to prevent the possible occurrence of marine accidents associated with sea fog.
We have examined the influence of local wind on occurrence of fog at two inland areas, Chuncheon and Andong, in Korea. The surrounding topography of two inland areas shows significant difference: Chuncheon is located in the basin surrounded by ridges with north-south axis while Andong is located in the valley between the ridges with east-west axis. Occurrence of fog shows maximum in October at both sites but high occurrence of fog at Chuncheon is also noted in the winter. Occurrence of fog at Andong in October is much larger than that at Chuncheon. High occurrence of fog in October is due to favorable synoptic condition for fog formation such as weak wind, clear day and small depression of the dew-point. Fog occurrence at Chuncheon is closely related to very weak wind condition where wind speed is less than $0.5m\;s^{-1}$. The weak wind at Chuncheon in winter is due that pressure driven channeling wind (southerly) cancels out partly downslope northerly flow during nighttime. On the other hand, fog at Andong occurs well when wind is southeasterly which is thermally forced flow during nighttime. Southeasterly provides cold, moist air from the narrow valley to Andong during nighttime, leading to favorable condition for formation of fog.

In this study, characteristics of fog at Mokpo as the west coastal area of Jeonnam were investigated, using statistical analysis of observed fog and meteorological data. Higher frequency of the fog occurrence at Mokpo was showed in spring(32%) and summer(34%) due to the seasonal high atmospheric pressure. Regional characteristics as radiation cooling, advection of fog and water vapor from surrounding sea and Yeongsan lake, and frontal fog had major effect on the coastal fog at Mokpo on the meteorological conditions of north-west/south wind and calm($0{\sim}2m/s$). Also, as the results of analyzing data of before and after the construction of Yeongsan dam, the frequency of annual mean fog days increased 41 %, specially increased 178% in autumn. The increase of fog days mainly resulted from evaporation during colder seasons and from temperature inversion during warmer seasons over the water surface of Yeongsan lake. The construction of Yeongsan dam had a little effect on the meteorological conditions concerning fog occurrence, because Yeongsan dam which only supplies the water for use do not always carry out outlet of the cold water. In addition, the sea fog at Heuksando located in offshore had not effect on the occurrence of fog at Mokpo.
We developed fog detection algorithm (KNU_FDA) based on the optical and textural properties of fog using satellite (COMS) and ground observation data. The optical properties are dual channel difference (DCD: BT3.7 - BT11) and albedo, and the textural properties are normalized local standard deviation of IR1 and visible channels. Temperature difference between air temperature and BT11 is applied to discriminate the fog from other clouds. Fog detection is performed according to the solar zenith angle of pixel because of the different availability of satellite data: day, night and dawn/dusk. Post-processing is also performed to increase the probability of detection (POD), in particular, at the edge of main fog area. The fog probability is calculated by the weighted sum of threshold tests. The initial threshold and weighting values are optimized using sensitivity tests for the varying threshold values using receiver operating characteristic analysis. The validation results with ground visibility data for the validation cases showed that the performance of KNU_FDA show relatively consistent detection skills but it clearly depends on the fog types and time of day. The average POD and FAR (False Alarm Ratio) for the training and validation cases are ranged from 0.76 to 0.90 and from 0.41 to 0.63, respectively. In general, the performance is relatively good for the fog without high cloud and strong fog but that is significantly decreased for the weak fog. In order to improve the detection skills and stability, optimization of threshold and weighting values are needed through the various training cases.
