  • Mini Double Gears Frame is critical part of PDP and also produces couple hundred thousand every month. In the process of mass production, product inspection is very important process. Double Gear, one of the part of machine, was inspected by human eyes which caused mistakes and slow progress. To achieve the speed and accuracy the system was compensated by vision system which is inspecting automatically. The focus value is measured based on the fact that high contrast images have much high frequency edge information. High frequency term of the image is extracted using the high-pass filter and the sum of the high frequency term is used as the focus value. We used a Gaussian smoothing filter to reduce the noise and then measures the focus value using the modified Laplacian filter called a Sum modified Laplacian Focus values for the various lens positions are calculated and the position with the maximum focus value is decided as the focused position. The focus values calculated in various lens position showed the Gaussian distribution. We proposed a method to estimate the best focus position using the Gaussian curve fitting. Focus values of the uniform interval lens positions are calculated and the values are used to estimate the Gaussian distribution parameters to find the best focus position.

  • We report a focal-length tunable liquid lens based on thermopneumatically driven fluidic pressure. The fluidic pressure is generated by deformation of an elastomeric diaphragm induced by thermopneumaticity from a laterally integrated microheater sealed within an air chamber. The pressure is transmitted by a confined liquid to a lens diaphragm through an internal fluid channel. The liquid filling under the lens diaphragm functions as a liquid lens for dynamic focusing with properties depending on the curvature of the deformed diaphragm. The diaphragm area of the air chamber is designed five times larger than that of the lens cavity to yield high focal-length tunability by amplified deflection of the lens diaphragm. With our method, we achieved excellent focal-length tunability from infinity (without an input current) to 4 mm (with an input current of 12 mA) with a lens aperture diameter of 2 mm.

  • The fabrication of a focal length-correcting lens called the F-theta lens was performed by a 3D printer. The fabricated lenses were characterized by transmittance and reflectance measurements. The optical properties of the lens, such as scattering or transmittance efficiency, were analyzed with respect to the wavelength (red, green, and blue) and the surface roughness of the lens. There was almost no shape aberration on the focus location of 0 degrees, but elliptical focus shapes were found at 1 and 2 degrees of the laser incidence angle. The developed process is expected to be used for the quick fabrication of lenses with low costs and quick turn-out. By improving the surface roughness during postprocessing, the optical properties are expected to be comparable to commercial lens quality.

  • A new concept of adaptive focusing, using a Rotman lens, is presented in this paper. A Rotman lens is a microwave lens which is able to focus microwave power on its focal arc or generate multiple beams. By adding the array of phase shifters between a Rotman lens and antenna elements, the wavefront can be adaptively modulated to focus objects distributed in short range rather than far-field zone. From the optical point of view, the propagations of the lens have been simplified from the Fresnel diffraction integral to the Fourier transform. Using Fourier Transform, a beam propagation method has been developed to show improvement of the resolution by controlling wavefront of wave propagating from an aperture-type antenna array. The beam width(or spot size) and intensity have been calculated for a focused beam propagating from an array having $10{\lambda}$ of its size. For the beam with $20{\lambda},\;30{\lambda}$, and $50{\lambda}$ of geometrical focal length, the half-power beamwidth (spot size) is about $1.1{\lambda},\;1.3{\lambda}$, and $1.9{\lambda}$, respectively.

  • There are four servo systems in a DVD drive such as a focus servo system, a tracking servo system, a sled servo system and a spindle servo system. Focus servo system maintains relative distance between lens and disk. In this paper, two plant models for the focus servo system will be presented. One of them is conventional and the other is newly developed. Focus error signal between lens and disk is detected using LDV 2 beam method. The system is observable and all states are estimated. Full states feedback controller and minimum order observed are designed using those states. Impulse responses are simulated. And experiment is performed to compare with responses of conventional model.

  • In this paper, the ultrasonic transducer with a spherical liquid lens is designed and an efficient method to calculate the acoustic field radiated from the transducer is presented. A prototype ultrasonic transducer with a spherical liquid lens is constructed and tested. The experimental results are compared with those of the computer simulations and good agreements are achieved. The dynamic control of the geometric focus is obtained by adjusting the radius of curvature of the lens membrane with the volumetric control of the liquid in the lens.

  • This paper reports the fabrication of a lenticular liquid crystal (LC) lens array with thermally tunable focus and with the function of a convertible lens type, using the surface structure of a UV-curable polymer and a twisted-nematic (TN) LC cell. The TN LC cell makes the LC lenticular lens function as a converging or diverging lens by controlling electrically the polarization of input light. Therefore, the focal lengths for both the converging and diverging lenses, which can be switched from the TN cell, can be tuned by changing the effective refractive index of the LC by Joule heating of the transparent electrode. As a result, the focal length of the lens with the E7 LC was changed continuously from 8.7 to 31.2 mm for the converging lens type and from -9.8 to -14.2 mm for the diverging lens when the temperature was increased from 25 to $56^{\circ}C$.

  • A focal length-correcting lens called the F-theta lens is required to compensate for the different focus on spot size due to the deflected incident laser beam. The F-theta lens was designed by the ray tracing method and fabricated by a 3D printer with polymer-based material. The designed F-theta lens is able to compensate for the focus on spot size by an incidence angle of 0 to 2 degrees. Based on the analysis of the simulation, there was almost no aberration in the $0^{\circ}C$ incidence angle, and the maximum of $50{\mu}m$ of aberration was observed at the incidence angle of $2^{\circ}$. Diffraction-encircled energy was analyzed to characterize the designed optics, and an image simulation was performed to confirm the actual image resolution.

  • We propose a lens-drive unit composed of an ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) for an auto-focus compact camera module in cellular phones to solve the power consumption problem of voice coil motors which are widely used in commercial products. In this research, an IPMC incorporated into a lens-drive unit is designed to implement a large displacement in low-power consumption by using an anisotropic plasma treatment. Experimental results show that a camera module containing IPMCs can control and maintain the position of the lens by using proportional integral derivative control with a photo-reflective position sensor despite the non-linear actuation behavior of IPMCs. We demonstrate that the fabrication and commercialization of a lens actuator that has a large displacement and low power consumption using IPMCs is possible in the near future.
