  • According to an increase in demand for polyurethane soft foam for thermally insulated containers, the purpose of this study is based on redefining existing rigid polyurethane foam insulation KS standard which has been limited to building material-based authentication techniques. Since there are arising concerns of consumer rights and safety due to humidifier fungicides and urethane track incidents, there are elements to be further researched on rigid polyurethane foam insulation for refregerated containers. Thus, we reviewed the prior standards for rigid polyurethane foam insulation and verified the validity of certification testing method for the new standard with self-foamed polyurethane.

  • Glass-reinforced polyurethane foam (R-PUF) is widely used as the primary and secondary insulation of Mark-III type liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo system. And, polyurethane foam (PUF) and polyisocyanurate foam (PIR) are often used for insulation of onshore structures or LNG storage and pipeline system. These polymeric foam materials are known for the characteristics that mechanical properties are dependent on strain rate and temperature. In this study, compression tests for R-PUF, PIR, and PUF were carried out for the estimation of mechanical behaviors under the cryogenic environment. The range of thermal condition was from room temperature to 110K and strain rates were $10^{-3}s^{-1}$ and $10^{-4}s^{-1}$. The test results were analyzed based on the conditions of strain-rate and temperature.

  • In this paper, a study on the development of OpenFOAM grid generation program for two-dimensional flow analysis is described. By using the pre-processor(eMEGA) of EDISON_CFD system, grids for OpenFOAM flow calculation were obtained. Resultant two-dimensional grids were used to calculate flow fields by applying simpleFoam, one of the OpenFOAM's popular solvers, and the obtained flow results were compared with theoretical and experimental data available. Also grids generated by present program were compared with grids by a commercial pre-processor Pointwise for the purpose of verification. Verification work includes three cases(single block, O-type single block, and multi block grid), and all results show reasonable matches. According to the current achievement, it can be concluded that OpenFOAM grid can be constructed conveniently by using eMEGA with GUI.

  • In this study, we studied the physical properties and application of PF foam as heat insulating materials. In the experimental results, the density of PF foam showed $0.030g/cm^3$ and the thermal conductivity showed $0.026kcal/m.h.^{\circ}C$. Also, thermal resistance of the prepared PF foam was volatilized about 71.7 wt% when the temperature was $500^{\circ}C$ (1 h). And the chemical structure of PF foam have a closed cell type in the important properties as heat insulating materials. Therefore, it was confirmed that the prepared PF foam had excellent performance as heat insulating materials.

  • The present experiment investigates the effects of pore density f of aluminum foam heat sinks, the jet-to-jet spacing X and the nozzle plate-to-target surface spacing H of 3$\times$3 square impinging arrays on the averaged Nusselt number. The performance of the aluminum foam heat sinks and the rectangular plate heat sink is evaluated in terms of the enhancement factor. /equation omitted/. The multiple impinging jet with X/d=4.0 displays higher Nusselt numbers than single impinging jet for 12.0$\leq$H/d$\leq$20.0. With the variation of the jet-to-jet spacing, the aluminum foam heat sink of 10 PPI show higher Nusselt numbers than the 20 and 40 PPI aluminum foam heat sinks. Further, the 10 PPI aluminum foam heat sink demonstrates 26% higher enhancement factor than the rectangular plate heat sink in the range of 7000$\leq$Re$\leq$11000.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the foaming properties of two small red bean protein isolates at various conditions. Data concerning the effects of pH, temperature, MaCl concentration, sugar concentration and protein concentration on the properties such as solubility, foam expansion, foam stability were presented. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The crude protein contents of two small red beans were 26.14% and 22.71%. The percentage of nonpolar amino acid group was the highest and that of sulfur containing amino acid group was the lowest. 2. Protein solubility showed the minimum at pH 4.5 which is isoelectric point of small red bean protein isolate adn heat treatment lowered solubility(P<0.05). At pH 4.5, solubility increased sighificantly as 0.4M NaCl was added. However, the effect of sugar concentration in the solubility was not significant. 3. Foam expansion of two small red bean protein isolates was high at pH 4.5 and heat treatment at 10$0^{\circ}C$ lowered foam expansion(P<0.05). While addition of NaCl, sugar did not affect the foma expansion, gradual increment of the protein isolates concentration up to 9% decreased the foma expansion slightly. 4. Foam stability was significantly high at pH 4.5 and heat treatment at 10$0^{\circ}C$ lowered foam stability. Addition of sugar caused slight decrease in foam stability. From 1% to 9% suspension, foma stability increased significantly as protein concentration increased(P<0.05)

  • The goal of the research is to evaluate the open source code of OpenFOAM for the use of nuclear plant flow simulation objectively. Of the various incompressible flow solvers, simpleFoam, pimpelFoam are then tested under three validated cases (backward facing step, flow over circular cylinder and turbulent round jet flow). For the evaluation of steady state incompressible laminar flow simulation, low reynolds number of backward facing step flow was solved by simpleFoam. The resultant of the reattached lengths turned out to be similar with the other experimental and simulation results. For transient flow simulation, flow over circular cylinder and turbulent round jet flow were solved by pimpleFoam. The simulation accuracy was evaluated by comparing the resultant flow patterns with the description of the characteristics of the flow over the circular cylinder. The quantitative accuracy was evaluated for no more than 85% by comparing it to the decaying constants of the turbulent round jet velocity.

  • The foam-filled tube beams can be used for the front rail and firewall structures to absorb impact energy during frontal or side collision of vehicles. In the case of side collision where bending is involved in the crushing mechanism, the foam filler would be effective in maintaining progressive crushing of the thin-walled structures so that much impact energy could be absorbed. In this study, bending behaviors of the closed-cell-aluminum-alloy-foam-filled stainless steel tube were investigated. The various foam-filled specimens including piecewise fillers were prepared and tested. The aluminum-alloy-foam filling offered the significant increase of bending resistance. Their suppression of the inward fold formation at the compression flange as well as the multiple propagating folds led to the increase of load carrying capacity of specimens. Moreover, the piecewise foams would provide the easier way to fill the thin-walled shell structures without the drawback of strength.

  • Foam extinguishing agent is widely used for extinguishing combustible liquid fires. Compared to other foam type extinguishing agents, protein foam has relatively low cost and low toxicity and produces stable foam blanket which is excellent in heat resistance and sealability, despite it has weak fluidity. Therefore the study investigated foaming characteristics followed by various factors affecting the fluidity of the protein foam extinguishing agent. The extinguishing characteristics differentiated by the changes in fluidity were also experimented. Foaming performance was compared by measuring the expansion ratio and the 25% drainage time. Moreover, the 25% drainage time and the extinguishing time was compared. The results showed that the 25% drainage time and the expansion ratio were increased as the pressure of nozzle and the concentration of hydrolyzed protein liquid enlarged. However the foaming and extinguishing performance were not improved when the condition exceeded certain level of pressure and concentration. The fastest fire extinguishing condition was the nozzle pressure 4bar with the 85wt.% of concentration of hydrolyzed protein liquid.

  • An experimental study is carried out for an aluminum foam heat sink attached to an isolated heat source to evaluate high potential of aluminum foam as a heat sink with impinging jets. The effects of the pore density and the height of the aluminum foam heat sink, the jet Reynolds number, and the nozzle diameter are delineated in comparison with a conventional pin type heat sink. It is found that the aluminum foam with small pores is inefficient for the heat transfer enhancement due to the large flow friction at the given porosity. In the parameter ranges of the present study, the change in the nozzle diameter shows no significant effects on the surface temperature of the aluminum foam heat sink at a given Reynolds number. The heat transfer enhancement is strongly dependent on the jet Reynolds number and shows a maximum value at a moderate Reynolds number.
