The copolymerizations of 2-fluorohexylethyl acrylate (FA) with 2-(o-(1'-methylpropylidenamino)carboxyl amino)ethyl methacrylate(MEM) with different molar ratios of the two monomers were carried out in methyl ethyl ketone using ${\alpha}$,${\alpha}$'-azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator to synthesize water repellent polyacrylate derivatives with protected isocyanate groups. The contents of FA and MEM in the copolymers were analyzed by NMR. The monomer reactivity ratios of MEM (1) and FA (2) were determined by Kelen-Tudos plot as follows : r$\_$1/=1.59 and r$\_$2/=0.50. The number-average molecular weights of the copolymers were in the range of 39400 to 72400 and the polydispersity indexes were about 1.5. The protected isocyanate groups in the copolymers were converted into isocyanate groups above 150$^{\circ}C$. The contact angle of the copolymer with 65 ㏖% of FA fur water was about 95$^{\circ}$.
Environmentally friendly water dispersion polyurethanes containing fluorine were prepared with a fluorinated polyol having $62\%$ of fluorine $(Fluorolink^{(R)}\;M_n\;1000)$. In order to control the fluorine contents of the synthesized polyurethanes polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG2000) and $Fluorolink^{(R)}$ were mixed at assigned ratios and reacted with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a diisocyanate used. Introducing hydrophilic anion to the polymer chain was achieved by applying dimethyl propionic acid (DMPA). The ionic groups were neutralized with triethyl amine (TEA) before dispersion into water. Chain extension was executed by adding ethylene diamine at the final stage. Mechanical properties of the polymers showed that modulus increased with increasing $Fluorolink^{(R)}$ content. Surface energy values obtained from contact angle measurement decreased with increasing $Fluorolink^{(R)}$ content up to $20\%$. We expect that the synthesized polyurethanes present reliable effect from the fluorine atoms incorporated even at a small amount of $Fluorolink^{(R)}$.
The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of molecular structure modifications on the kinetics of physical aging of thin films formed from 6FDA-based polyimides with time. The permeability for 6FDA-based polyimide thin films containing carboxyl acid groups commonly decreased 20-50% after the isothermal aging and the selectivity gained anywhere from 10% to 30% while the rate of permeability loss on the change of polymer structure showed different reciprocal relationship between 6FDA-6FpDA based polyimides and 6FDA-DAM based polyimides. The Lorenz-Lorentz equation was used to relate changes in refractive index to densification and volume relaxation with aging time. The permeability as a function of aging time fits the expected form $P=Ae^{(-B/f)}$. The results matched well with the data for different polymer membranes.

Atomically thin graphene is the ideal model system for studying nanoscale friction due to its intrinsic two-dimensional anisotropy. Furthermore, modulating its tribological properties could be an important milestone for graphene-based micro and nano-mechanical devices. Here, we report that the tribological properties can be easily altered via simple chemical modifications of the graphene surface. Friction force microscopy measurements show that hydrogenated, fluorinated, and oxidized graphenes exhibit, 2-, 6-, and 7-fold enhanced nanoscale friction on their surfaces, respectively, compared to pristine graphene. The measured nanoscale friction should be associated with the adhesive and elastic properties of the chemically modified graphenes. Density functional theory calculations suggest that, while the adhesive properties of chemically modified graphenes are marginally reduced down to ~30%, the out-of-plane elastic properties are drastically increased up to 800%. Based on these findings, we propose that nanoscale friction on graphene surfaces is characteristically different from that on conventional solid surfaces; stiffer graphene exhibits higher friction, whereas a stiffer three-dimensional solid generally exhibits lower friction. The unusual friction mechanics of graphene is attributed to the intrinsic mechanical anisotropy of graphene, which is inherently stiff in plane, but remarkably flexible out of plane. The out-of-plane flexibility can be modulated up to an order of magnitude by chemical treatmentof the graphene surface. The correlation between the measured nanoscale friction and the calculated out-of-plane flexibility suggests that the frictional energy in graphene is mainly dissipated through the out-of-plane vibrations, or the flexural phonons of graphene.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces synthesis of several inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide (NO). NO in brain is involved not only in the regulation of important metabolic pathways via intracellular cyclic GMP-dependent pathways, but also in neurotoxic damage by reacting with superoxide ion leading to form peroxynitrite radical. Oxidative stress has suggested to be related to the inhibition of NO synthase/cyclic GMP pathway. OQ21 is a new fluorinated quinone compound that is recently known to have inhibitory effects on both NO synthase (NOS) and guanylyl cyclase (GC). In this study, we examined effects of OQ21, other known NOS or GC inhibitors, or an antioxidant, melatonin, on the oxidative stress produced by LPS in rat brain. Oxidative stress was observed by using the 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate to measure intra-cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and by measuring the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances to measure lipid peroxidation. LPS induced significant increase in both ROS produdction and lipid peroxidation in all brain regions tested (striatum, hippocampus and cortex), which were dissected 6hr after intraperitoneal administration of LPS to rats. Direct striatal injection of two NOS inhibitors, N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester and diphenyleneiodonium, or a GC inhibitor, IH-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxaline-l-one, produced no significant ROS increase. However, OQ21 enhanced ROS formation in striatal tissues from LPS-treated rats. Melatonin decreased LPS-induced ROS formation and decreased ROS formation increased by OQ21 in striatum of LPS-treated rats.
The effect of fluorination of nanoscaled silicas on mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the silica/polyurethane composites was investigated. The surface properties of the silica were studied in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. Their mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the composites were characterized by tearing energy and decomposition activation energy, respectively. As experimental results, the London dispersive component of surface free energy and fluorine functional groups of silica surfaces were increased as a function of fluorination temperature resulting in improving the trearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$) of the composites. Also, the thermal stabilities of the composites were increased as the treatment temperature increases. These results could be explained that the fluorine functional groups on silica surfaces played an important role in improving the intermolecular interactions at interfaces between silicas and polyurethane matrix in a composite system.
Recently, there are many efforts focused on development of more economical non-fluorinated membranes for PEMFCs (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells). In this study, sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (sPEEK) membrane reinforced with poly imide was made to enhance of membrane durability. In order to test durability of single (un-reinforced) membrane and reinforced membrane MEA (Membrane and Electrode Assembly), degradation accelerated stress test was used. Before and after degradation, I-V polarization curve, hydrogen crossover current, electrochemical surface area, membrane resistance and charge transfer resistance were measured. As a result of experiments, hydrogen crossover current of reinforced MEA was lower than that of single MEA, therefor durability of reinforced MEA was higher than that of single MEA. There was not especially short phenomena in reinforced MEA after degradation accelerated stress test.

The thermal decomposition of a dilute mixture of 1,1,2,2,-$C_2H_2F_4$ in argon has been investigated in a single-pulse shock tube between 1146 and $1232^{\circ}K$ at total reflected shock pressures of about 3000 torr. Under these conditions the reaction proceeds exclusively by the molecular elimination of hydrogen fluoride. It has been found that the asymmetric isomer with the fully fluorinated ${\alpha}$-carbon requires the higher activation energy which may be attributed to the difference in atomic charge densities between isomers. The rate constant ratio is given by $log(k_1/k_2) = -0.069 {\pm} 0.021 +(1388{\pm}113) / 2.303RT$ in good agreement with previous independent studies.

The new stick make-up product was studied by using a gel, which is a viscous complex formed with clay minerals, vitamins A and E and fluorinated liquid polymer with a 1500 molecular weight. The gel cannot be obtained with any random combination of clay minerals and the ingredients described above. It takes the sequential manufacturing method as follows to get this kind of gel. Firstly, clay minerals and liquid polymers have to be pre-mixed in order to saturate the liquid polymers with the clay minerals. Then the on-processed gel has to be finely crystallized. The clay minerals, which are the core elements for this gel, were used as a function of Binder & Buffer and liquid polymer was mixed together for the deterioration of the surface tension of each component and to form a functional film in the gel. This liquid polymer was combined with clay minerals because it is not miscible with most oils and solvents. Waxes have a function of keeping a solid status in the stick. We reduced the usage of waxes by putting clay minerals as buffer in the proportion of 0.5:1 with oil phase. Ceramide takes care of the skin when used regularly and maintains the skin's moisture. Vitamins A and E contribute to preventing skin aging by the activation of skin cells. We could get the stable viscous gel, which has about 80% oil phase using clay minerals and liquid polymer. The crystalline structures of gel were surface-chemically-analyzed using SEM and Image Analyzer and were thermodynamically analyzed using DSC. Surface tension test and softness were done by Rheometer. In the end, these characteristics were verified by consumer panel tests in Seoul, Daegeon and Pusan in Korea and Hokkaido, Osaka and Miyazaki in Japan with correlation to the climate.

Chitosan was depolymerized by using nitrous acid. In order to synthesize new fluorinated chitosan oligomer(FCO) derivative, free amine groups of resulting low molucular weight chitosan oligomers were reacted with trifluoroacetic anhydride. The structure changes in the samples were conformed by using FT-IR, $^{1}H\;NMR$, $^{13}C\;NMR$ and $^{19}F\{^{1}H\}NMR$. Antiviral activity of FCO was studied by measuring DAN amounts of the replication viruses at 36 hr after the cells were infected with the viral solution containing FCO of various concentrations. The viral replications in the cells infected with the viral solution containing FCO were proportionally decreased with the FCO does, compared to those of the control groups, indicating that FCO efficiently inhibits viral infection. In particular, viral replication was decreased to 40% in the 1% FCO-treated cells.
