  • A fluidized bed combustion chamber is widely used to incinerate waste material. The most important factor designing the incinerator is the flow characteristics in a fluidized bed, because combustion efficiency is influenced by the flow characteristics. This paper has invesitigated the flow characteristics of bubbles in fluidized bed by means of meassuring a pressure fluctuation in the fluidized bed. A pressure probe system has used to measure the pressure. The data concerned with bubble rising velocity, bubble size, distribution of bubbles and frequency of bubble generation or decay are obtained to find the flow characteristics of bubbles in the fluidized bed. The result obtained from this experimental study can be used to design the fuel feeding system of fluidized bed combustion type incinerator. And it is possible to predict the mixing of waste material and fluidizing material.

  • Combustion of RDF and wastewater sludge was performed in a 0.1MWth bench scale circulating fluidized bed combustor(CFBC), Combustion characteristics of the RDF and sludge mixture demonstrated stable combustion conditions. Component analysis, Combustion characteristics was measured before and after the test, and applications for commercial 1MWe CFBC boiler were prepared. The release of hazardous components such as $SO_2$ and HCl was relatively low values of 50 and 150ppm, respectively.

  • A laboratory scale fluidized bed reactor was developed to treat the combustion characteristics of some fuels (wood, paper sludge, refuse derived fuel). The aims were to introduce the means of experiment and interpretation of the results and finally determine the particle characteristics on the pyrolysis and combustion process of the fuel. A single particle combustion process in the fluidized bed was closely observed. Understanding experimental facility characteristics and determining parameters were also carried out. The fuel combustion processes were observed by carbon conversion rate, recovery and mean carbon conversion time. They were estimated with the CO, $CO_2$ gas concentration monitored at the exit of the combustor. Fuel drying and pyrolysis process were governed by temperature distribution in the fuel particle. There was a significant overlap of the drying and devolatilization. However, transition process from devolatilization to char combustion seemed to be determined by mechanical solidity of the fuel particle after devolatilization process.

  • The characteristics of combustion and of emissions in pressurized fluidized bed combustor are investigated. The pressure of the combustor is fixed at 6 atm, and the combustion temperatures are set to 850, 900, and $950^{\circ}C$. The gas velocities are 0.9, 1.1, and 1.3 m/s. The excess air ratio is varied from 5 to 35%. The coal used in the experiment is Shenhwa coal in China. All experiments are executed at 2m bed height. Consequently, NOx & $N_2O$ concentration in the flue gas is increased with incresing excess air ratio but $SO_2$ concentration is decreased with incresing excess air ratio. CO concentration is maintained below 100ppm at over 15% of excess air ratio.

  • The circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler has some problems to scale up. Several engineering solutions have been proposed by a few suppliers which had advanced CFB technology. Large-scale CFB design concepts from different suppliers were reviewed and compared. Points of the hydrodynamic and heat recovery were summarized and discussed for developing the guideline of the large-scale circulating fluidized bed boilers.

  • A numerical investigation using a commercial CFD program of the Inter-Phase Slip Algorithm has been carried out for detail characteristics of particle motions and bubble behaviors in a two dimensional fluidized bed. The bed simulated has been operated with three different distributor geometries, such as bubble cap, nozzle, and perforated plate types. Experiments using a slit-type two-dimensional fluidized bed and a cylinder-type fluidized bed have been performed in order to confirm the simulation model. In addition, the numerical results are compared with the wellknown correlation of bubble sizes and bubble rising velocities by Mori and Wen [1]. The simulation model that we applied is shown to be useful to understand the relation between bubble behaviors and distributor geometries.

  • The objective of present work is to investigate experimentally the characteristics of heat transfer. A fluidized bed combustion has advantages of pollution control, fuel flexibility and excellent heat transfer. The present study investigates fundamental phenomena of bed-to-surface heat transfer in high temperature fluidized beds to improve design of immersed tube surface. The tested operating variables are bed temperature, supeficial velocity, mean size of bed material, and the rake angle of fin. Generally, heat transfer rates between the fluidized bed and immersed finned-tube are much higher than those of a smooth tube. A life time of finned-tube is generally longer than that of smooth tube.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of co-combustion of mixed anthracite (domestic and Vietnam) and bituminous coal (Sonoma, Australia) at circulating fluidized bed boiler in Donghae thermal power plant when mixing ratio of bituminous coal is variable. Co-combustion of bituminous coal contributes to improvement in general combustion characteristics such as moderately retaining temperature of furnace and recycle loop, reducing unburned carbon powder, and reducing discharge concentration of NOx and limestone supply owing to improvement in anthracite combustibility as the mixing ratio was increased. However, bed materials were needed to be added externally when the mixing ratio exceeded 40% because of reduction in generating bed materials based on reduction in ash production. When co-combustion was conducted in the section of 40 to 60% in the mixing ratio while the supplied particles of bituminous coal was increased from 6 mm to 10 mm, continuous operation was shown to be possible with upper differential pressure of 100 mmH2O (0.98 kPa) and more without addition of bed materials for the co-combustion of mixed anthracite and bituminous coal (to 50% or less of the ratio) and that of domestic coal and bituminous coal (to 60% of the ratio).
