  • The one way fluid structure interaction analysis on advanced propeller blade for next generation turboprop aircraft. HS1 airfoil series are selected as a advanced propeller blade airfoil. Adkins method is used for aerodynamic design and performance analysis with respect to the design point. Adkins method is based on the vortex-blade element theory which design the propeller to satisfy the condition for minimum energy loss. propeller geometry is generated by varying chord length and pitch angle at design point. Blade sweep is designed based on the design mach number and target propulsion efficiency. The aerodynamic characteristics of the designed Advanced propeller were verified by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) and showed the enhanced performance than the conventional propeller. The skin-foam sandwich structural type is adopted for blade. The high stiffness, strength carbon/epoxy composite material is used for the skin and PMI(Polymethacrylimide) is used for the foam. Aerodynamic load is calculated by computational fluid dynamics. Linear static stress analysis is performed by finite element analysis code MSC.NASTRAN in order to investigate the structural safety. The result of structural analysis showed that the design has sufficient structural safety. It was concluded that structural safety assessment should incorporate the off-design points.

  • Recently, the ship vibration analysis technique has been well set up by using FEM. The methods considering the hydrodynamic added mass and damping of the fluid surrounding a floating ship have been well developed, so that they can be calculated by using the commercial package FEM programs such as MSC/NASTRAN, ADINA and ANSYS. Especially, MSC/NASTRAN has the functions to consider the fluid in tanks(MFLUID) and to solve the Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) problem(DMAP). In this study, the global ship vibration with considering the added mass distributed at the grid points on the wetted shell surface is introduced to. In the new method, the velocity potentials of the fluid surrounding a floating ship are calculated by solving the Lapalce equation using the Boundary Element Method(BEM), and the point mass is obtained by integrating the potentials at the points. Then, the global vibration analyses of the ship structure with distributed added mass on the wetted surface are carried out for an oil/chemical tanker. During the future sea trial, the results will be confirmed by measurement.

  • The turbine is one of the most important components in the tidal current power device which can convert current flow to rotational energy. Generally, a tidal turbine has two or three blades that are subjected to hydrodynamic loads. The blades are continuously deformed by various incoming flow velocities. Depending on the velocities, blade size, and material, the deformation rates would be different that could affect the power production rate as well as turbine performance. Surely deformed blades would decrease the performance of the turbine. However, most studies of turbine performance have been carried out without considerations on the blade deformation. The power estimation and analysis should consider the deformed blade shape for accurate output power. This paper describes a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis conducted using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the finite element method (FEM) to estimate practical turbine performance. The loss of turbine efficiency was calculated for a deformed blade that decreased by 2.2% with maximum deformation of 216mm at the blade tip. As a result of the study, principal causes of power loss induced by blade deformation were analysed and summarised in this paper.

  • In this paper the unsteady fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with large structural displacement are solved by partitioned solution approaches in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element framework. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the characteristic-based split (CBS) scheme. Both a rigid body and a geometrically nonlinear solid are considered as the structural models. The latter is solved by Newton-Raphson procedure. The equation governing the structural motion is advanced by Newmark-${\beta}$ method in time. The dynamic mesh is updated by using moving submesh approach that cooperates with the ortho-semi-torsional spring analogy method. A mass source term (MST) is introduced into the CBS scheme to satisfy geometric conservation law. Three partitioned coupling strategies are developed to take FSI into account, involving the explicit, implicit and semi-implicit schemes. The semi-implicit scheme is a mixture of the explicit and implicit coupling schemes due to the fluid projection splitting. In this scheme MST is renewed for interfacial elements. Fixed-point algorithm with Aitken's ${\Delta}^2$ method is carried out to couple different solvers within the implicit and semi-implicit schemes. Flow-induced vibrations of a bridge deck and a flexible cantilever behind an obstacle are analyzed to test the performance of the proposed methods. The overall numerical results agree well with the existing data, demonstrating the validity and applicability of the present approaches.

  • This paper presents a computational framework for drop time assessment of a control element assembly (CEA) under fuel assembly (FA) deformations. The proposed framework consists of three key components: 1) finite element modeling of CEA, 2) fluid-structure interaction to compute drag force, and 3) modeling of frictional contact between CEA and FA. Specially, to accommodate the large motion of CEA, beam elements based on absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) are adopted. The continuity equation is utilized to calculate the drag force, considering flow changes in the cross-sectional area during the CEA drop. Lastly, beam-inside-beam frictional contact model is employed to capture practical contact conditions between CEA and FA. The proposed framework is validated through experiments under two scenarios: free falls of CEA within FA, encompassing undeformed and deformed scenarios. The experimental validation of the framework demonstrated that the drop time of CEA can be accurately predicted under the complex coupling effects of fluid and frictional contact. The drop times of the S-shaped deformation case is longer than those of the C-shaped deformation case, affirming the time delay due to frictional force. The validation confirms the potential applicability to access the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants under extreme conditions.

  • Column mixer Is one of the facilities to mix fluids at petrochemical plants. The vibration of column mixer is usually caused by pumps for fluid inflow and mixing of inside fluids. This fluid induced nitration is mainly responsible for the reduction of column life. Measurements were performed for understanding the vibration characteristics of the column. First measurement results showed the need of stiffness reinforcement. After the reinforcement work, second measurement confirmed the difference between two results. Modal analysis was also performed to investigate the resonance of the column vibration and the damage of the rib plate. To confirm fluid induced vibration at the column mixer fluid structure interaction analysis using ADINA/FSI was performed, which showed the necessity of the modification of the rotary valve.

  • This study has been conducted to investigate the characteristics of flow field and discharge valve motion in a rotary compressor. In this study, a transient three-dimensional numerical analysis using FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) model has been employed to analyze the interaction between the discharge valve and the refrigerants in the rotary compressor. It has been observed that two peaks have appeared in the displacement of the discharge valve. The maximum displacement of the discharge valve has been found to be located at the second peak. Also, the input pressure of the refrigerants has been compared with the pressures of the muffler passage and the compressor outlet in the rotary compressor. The pressure has decreased along the pathway in the rotary compressor. And the volume flow rates obtained from the current numerical study have been compared with the experiment at data to verify the validity of the present numerical study. This study may supply the fundamental data for the design of rotary compressors.
