The paper presents extensive survey and review of experimental and analytical researches on fluid film bearings and squeeze film dampers (SFDs) for turbomachinery available in open literature (major archival international journals) published recently (2018 and 2019 only). Over 60 published research works are reviewed based on the research topics and objectives, the types of bearings, size of bearings, and main design parameters with a brief summary of experiments and/or predictions in each work. Some important findings and general observations about the experimental and/or predictive data are also presented. There are several major trends observed throughout the survey. A large portion of the papers focuses on bearing surface textures and effect of operating and assembly conditions on static and/or dynamic forced performances, as well as bearing surface roughness and wear patterns. Researches on geometry of orifices and recesses in hydrostatic (or hybrid) bearings, as well as bearing system stability predictions using thermohydrodynamic analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), are considered as significant topics. Studies on SFDs mainly focus on experimental identification of force coefficients for various SFD geometries and sealing conditions. Reliable experiments of fluid film bearings and SFDs along with the development of experimentally benchmarked predictive tools enable reinforcement of the path for reliable implementations of the bearing components into high performance rotating machinery operating at extreme and harsh conditions. The extensive list of sources of recent experiments in the available open literature is a welcome addition to the analytical community to gauge the accuracy of predictive tools.
This paper presents the stability characteristics of a rotor-bearing system supported by actively controlled hydrodynamic journal bearing. The proportional and derivative controls including coupled motion are adopted for the control algorithm to control the hydrodynamic journal bearing with a circumferentially groove. Also, the cavitation algorithm implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition is adopted to predict cavitation regions in the fluid film more accurately than conventional analysis which uses the Reynolds condition. The stability characteristics are investigated with the Routh-Hurwitz criteria using the linear dynamic coefficients which are obtained from the perturbation method. The stability characteristics of the rotor-bearing system supported by active controlled hydrodynamic journal bearing are investigated for various control gain. It is found that the speed at onset of instability is increased for both proportional and derivative control of the bearing, and the proportional and derivative control of coupled motion is more effective than proportional and derivative control of uncoupled motion.
The nonlinear vibration characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearings with a circumferentially groove are analyzed numerically when the external sinusoidal disturbances are given to the rotor-bearing system continuously. Also, the cavitation algorithm implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition is adopted to predict cavitation regions in the fluid film more accurately than conventional analysis which uses the Reynolds condition. It is found that the difference between linear and nonlinear analysis is much more remarkable as the amplitude of external disturbance increases, and it depends upon the excitation frequency of external disturbance. It is also shown that the cavity region in the fluid film is increased as the amplitude or excitation frequency of external disturbance increases. The whirling center of the steady state orbit moves closer to the bearing center as the amplitude or the excitation frequency of the external disturbance increases because of smaller range of full film region.
Ball bearings have been widely used for the spindle motor bearing in various kinds of information storage devices. Recently many researchers have been trying to replace ball bearings with fluid film bearings because of their superior NRRO(non-repeatable runout) characteristics. In this study, a numerical analysis has been conducted for the complicate bearing system composed of herringbone groove journal bearing and spiral groove thrust bearing for the spindle motor of the information storage device. At first, spindle motor bearing is modeled as journal bearing part and thrust bearing part separately, and then observed various influences of geometric parameters. Previous studies had considered only the translational motion of the journal bearing. However, this study takes the additional 2-degree of freedom rotation into consideration to attempt to describe the real motion of the spindle bearing. As a result, rotational stiffness coefficients and rotational damping coefficients are obtained. In addition, a spindle bearing system made up of four bearings is modeled and interpreted at once and coefficients of dynamic characteristics of each bearing are obtained. Finally, an eigen analysis of bearing system is made with these results. Through this analysis, it is possible to estimate an unstable condition of the system for given geometric parameters and to propose a method which is able to avoid the unstable condition by a proper adjustment of geometric parameters.
This paper numerically analyzes the dynamic characteristics of a spindle system supported by two identical journal bearings considering bearing span that has dynamic load due to its mass unbalance. The Reynolds equation is transformed to solve a herringbone grooved journal bearing. The Reynolds equations are solved using FEM in order to calculate the pressure distribution in a fluid film. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress along the fluid film, respectively. Dynamic behaviors, such as whirl radius or angular displacement of a rotor, are determined by solving its nonlinear equations of motion with the Runge-Kutta method. This research shows that the same bearing spans of upper and lower journal bearings produce the minimum runout and friction torque of a spindle system.

The traditional approach is to characterize the behavior and performance of fluid film hydrodynamic journal bearings by means of linearized bearing analysis. The objective of this paper is to examine the nonlinear characteristics of the journal bearing when an external sinusoidal shock is given to the system. The oil film force is obtained by solving the finite width Reynolds equation at each time step by the solution of the column method. Frequency response functions obtained from both linear and nonlinear bearing simulations are compared with each other.

Tribological characteristics in the sliding parts of oil hydraulic piston pumps are very important in increasing overall efficiency. In this study, the fluid film between the valve plate and the cylinder block was measured by using a gap sensor and the mercury-cell slip ring unit under real working conditions. To investigate the effect of the valve shape, we designed three valve plates each having a different shape. One of the valve plates was without bearing pad, another valve plate had bearing pad and the last valve plate was a spherical valve plate. It was noted that these three valve plates observed different aspects of the fluid film characteristics between the cylinder block and the valve plate. The leakage flow rates and the shaft torque were also investigated in order to clarify the performance difference between these three types of valve plates. From the results of this study, we found that the spherical valve plate estimated good fluid film patterns and good performance more than the other valve plates in oil hydraulic axial piston pumps.
In this study, the behavior characteristics of a hydrostatic thrust bearing used in hydraulic equipment was analyzed using a commercial finite element program, ADINA. The solid domain was modeled with the fluid domain simultaneously to solve the fully coupled problem, because this is a problem where a fully coupled analysis is needed in order to model the fluid-structure interaction(FSI). The results such as bearing deformation, stress, film thickness and lifting bearing force were obtained through FSI analysis, and then they were compared with the results calculated from the classical method, a single step sequential analysis. It was found that the result difference between two analyses was increased according to the injection pressure. Therefore, in case of high pressure loading, it is desirable to conduct the FSI analysis to examine the deformation characteristics of a hydrostatic slipper bearing.

The speed at onset of instability of a rotor-bearing system is increased by both proportional and derivative control of the bearing. The proportional control increases the stability threshold without affecting the whirl ratio. However, for the derivative control of the bearing, increase of stability threshold speed is accompanied by a parallel reduction of the whirl ratio. The integral control has no effect on stability characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearing. The PD-control is more effective than proportional or derivative control. Results 7how the active control of bearing can be adopted for the stability improvement of a rotor-bearing system.
