To get accurate vibration analysis of rotor-bearing systems, finite element models of high speed rotating shaft, unbalance disk, and fluid film journal bearing are developed. The study includes the effects of rotary inertia, gyroscopic moment, damping, shear deformation, and axial torque in the same model. It does not include the axial force effect, but the extension is straighforward. The finite elements developed can be used in the analysis design of any type of multiple rotor bearing system. To show the accuracy of the models, numerical examples are demonstrated.

In this work, the dynamic characteristics of an oil-lubricated, short SFD with a central feeding groove are derived based on a theoretical analysis considering the effect of a groove. The validity of the analysis is investigated experimentally using an Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) system as an exciter. For the theoretical solution, the fluid film forces of a grooved SFD are analytically derived so that the dynamic coefficients of a SFD are expressed in terms of its design parameters. (omitted)
The hydrostatic slipper bearing is generally used in high pressure axial piston pumps to support the load generated from two surfaces which are sliding relatively at low speed. The object of the bearing is to remove the possibility of direct contact by maintenance of an adequate oil film thickness between two metal surfaces. Because the bearing performance is influenced by the bearing deformation, it is highly dependent on the injection pressure, the bearing surface profile and so on. In this study, the deformation characteristics of a hydrostatic slipper bearing is investigated according to the injection pressure by the finite element analysis. In the analysis, the special boundary condition to take the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) into account is used on the interactive surface. The results, such as bearing deformation, stress and lifting force, obtained from the fully coupled analysis are compared with those from the single step sequential method.
This study analyzes the thermal effects on the performance of an air foil thrust bearing (AFTB) using COMSOL Multiphysics to approximate actual bearing behavior under real conditions. An AFTB is a sliding-thrust bearing that uses air as a lubricant to support the axial load. The AFTB consists of top and bump foils and supports the rotating disk through the hydrodynamic pressure generated by the wedge effect from the inclined surface of the top foil and the elastic deformation of the bump foils, similar to a spring. The use of air as a lubricant has some advantages such as low friction loss and less heat generation, enabling air bearings to be widely used in high-speed rotating systems. However, even in AFTB, the effects of energy loss due to viscosity at high speeds, interface frictional heat, and thermal deformation of the foil caused by temperature increase cannot be ignored. Foil deformation derived from the thermal effect influences the minimum decay in film thickness and enhances the film pressure. For these reasons, performance analyses of isothermal AFTBs have shown few discrepancies with real bearing behavior. To account for this phenomenon, a thermal-fluid-structure analysis is conducted to describe the combined mechanics. Results show that the load capacity under the thermal effect is slightly higher than that obtained from isothermal analysis. In addition, the push and pull effects on the top foil and bump foil-free edges can be simulated. The differences between the isothermal and thermal behaviors are discussed.
This paper deals with the detail rotordynamic analysis for the vertical rotor system as development of vertical sea water lift pump for FPSO deep well. In a vertical rotor system, since linearized stiffness and damping coefficients of fluid film bearing are no longer be valid, hence the transient response analysis considering a fluid film force for every journal position in the bearing needs to be required. In this study, the transient response analysis of the proposed vertical pump rotor system was carried out in dry-run and wet-run conditions, respectively. The results show that orbital vibration responses of the rotor system remain stable at rated speed and thereby operating reliability of the vertical rotor system is confirmed. To overcome complexity of calculation pr ocedure and time consuming calculation of transient analysis, the calculating technique of steady-state response analysis is also proposed. The results of steady-state response obtained by applying the proposed technique to the rotor system are good agreement with the reference results, that is, transient responses.

Fluid film tilting pad journal bearings are widely used for large steam turbines. However, bearing problems by pad fluttering, such as fatigue damage in the upper unloaded pad, the break of locking pins and the wear of pinholes etc., are frequently taken place in the actual steam turbines. The purpose of the present work is to investigate on the mechanism of pad fluttering and the prevention of pad fluttering with the variation of preload(m) in a tilting pad journal bearing. It is estimated that upper pad is easy to flutter because the film shape of upper pad is diverged one from the analysis of moment direction acting on pivot point. Effective preload range in order to be statically loaded pad under all operating conditions is suggested as m>0.5. Also, as a bearing that can be prevented pad fluttering, design modified bearing is suggested. For the adjustment in actual steam turbines, bearing and rotor dynamic analysis are performed to identify bearing characteristics and to verify the reliability of rotor-bearing system.
This paper focuses on the thermal deformation induced preload change in the tilting pad journal bearing, using a three-dimensional (3D) thermo-hydro-dynamic (THD) approach. Preload is considered as a critical factor in designing the tilting pad journal bearing. The initial preload measured under nil external load and nil thermal gradient is influenced by two factors, namely, the thermal deformation and elastic deformation. Thermal deformation is due to a temperature distribution in the bearing pads, whereas the elastic deformation is due to fluid forces acting on the pads. This study focuses on the changes induced in preload and film clearance due to thermal deformation. The generalized Reynolds equation is used to evaluate the force of the fluid and the 3D energy equation is used to calculate the temperature of the lubricant. The abovementioned equations are combined by establishing a relationship between viscosity and temperature. The heat transfer within the bearing pads, the lubricant, and the spinning journal is calculated using the heat flux boundary condition. The 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) is used in modeling the (1) heat conduction in the spinning journal and bearing pads, (2) thermal gradient induced thermal distortion of the spinning journal and pads, and (3) viscous shearing, and heat conduction and convection in a thin film. This evaluation method has an increased fidelity, and it can prove to be a cost-effective tool that can be used by designers to predict the dynamic behavior of a bearing.

Results of theoretical investigations on acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are presented. Nonlinear analysis of rotor bearing system including rotor imbalance is performed in order to obtain acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings. Furthermore, a cavitation algorithm, implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition, is adopted to predict cavitation regions in a fluid film. Acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are identified through frequency analysis of pressure fluctuation calculated from the nonlinear transient analysis. The results show that the acoustical frequency spectra of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are pure tone spectra, containing the frequency of the shaft rotation and its super-harmonics. The analysis also shows that the super-harmonics are predominant at neighborhood of the fluid film reformation and rupture regions.

This paper presents the comparison analysis of a Journal and thrust FDB (fluid dynamic bearing) and a conical FDB in a HDD spindle motor. The Reynolds equation is appropriately transformed to describe journal, thrust and conical bearing. Finite element method is applied to analyze the FDB by satisfying the continuity of mass and pressure at the interface between the hearings. The pressure field of the bearings is numerically approximated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition. The load and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and the velocity gradient along the fluid film. The flying height of the spindle motor is measured to verify the proposed analytical result. This research shows that the conical bearing generates bigger load capacity and less friction torque than the journal and thrust bearing in a HDD spindle motor.
Bearing design of turbo type geared centrifugal air compressor for low vibration level has been studied. The Transfer Matrix Method was used in this paper to analyze the air-compressor consisting of impellers, multi-stage geared rotors, and oil-film hearings. We have to consider this air-compressor as multi-geared rotating system, because characteristics of rotor-bearing system are different from conventional characteristics of non-rotating system. From the view point of Rotordynamics, the stiffness and damping coefficient of oil-film bearing in case of compressor system are more sensitive than other design parameters such as shaft length, shaft diameter and the weight of impellers, etc. Therefore, the stiffness and damping coefficients on each bearing were considered as design parameters. As the result of this study, turbo type air compressor with low vibration level can be achieved.
