  • The new Cymbidium variety 'Pink Glory' (Palace Court 'Jacky' ${\times}$ Lucky Rainbow 'Saint Rapine') was developed at the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in 2006. A cross was made in 1995 between C. Palace Court 'Jacky' with a medium sized bright pink colored flowers, and C. Lucky Rainbow 'Saint Rapine' with pink colored flowers. In 1999, one line was selected based on the flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigorous growth. Evaluation and selection trials were conducted from 2000 to 2004. 'Pink Glory' has a light pink sepal (RHS, RPN66D), red lip (R52B) and a leaf length of 87.5 cm. The average number of flowers on each peduncle was 20.5 and the flower diameter was 8.6 cm. The general impression of petals and sepals showed some incurved and some spreading. 'Pink Glory' has a vigorous growth character and a rounded flower shape. It has an adequate peduncle height (66.5 cm) compared to leaf length (87.5 cm) and starts to bloom in late January under optimal cultural conditions.

  • This study concerns the flower-shaped silver crown ornament and inverted triangle-shaped crown ornament of Baekje, which were worn frequently during the Sabi period. The purpose of this study is to present a new estimated shape of the crown and ornaments. Individual excavation cases and archaeological data were analyzed. The flower-shaped silver crown ornament appears as a thin silver plate with buds on the center and side branches and is symmetrically bent from the center to form a ∧ shape. The inverted triangle-shaped crown ornament resembles two right-angle triangles that are back-to-back. The crown to which the two ornaments were added appears to be a triangular crown that was made by covering birch bark of with fabric. Both ornaments were believed to have been located on the front of crown, but that is incorrect. The flower-shaped silver crown ornament was inserted on the front of the crown, and the inverted triangle-shaped crown ornament was fixed with a tip at the top of the crown and then obliquely on the crown's side. The inferred design was confirmed with real reproductions. This study is significant in that it identifies the crown of Baekje during the Sabi period.

  • A new cultivar of Rosa hybrida 'Loving Heart' was developed by crossing Gyeongkyo R-6 and 'Noblesse' at Gumi Floricultural Experiment Station in 2002. Characteristics trials were conducted three times from 2004 to 2007. This cultivar showed dark pink flower color (RHS, Red-purple group 66-B) and standard type with good flower shape. The flower diameter is 10.3cm and the number of petals per flower is 55. Vase life of 'Loving Heart' could be as long as 12.3days. The yield of 'Loving Heart' was $127stems/m^2/year$. 'Loving Heart' has good quality of cut flower and strong vigor in plant growth. This cultivar has straight stems and is easy to culture because of a few prickles on the top of stem. This cultivar is appropriate for both soil and solution(hydroponics) cultures.

  • The purpose of this study is to inquire original design and character of dancheong in Yeongnamnu P avilion which features unusual portraits of twisting dragons and four heavenly creatures. Its artistic value and originality can be found in the portraits of four heavenly creatures which are painted on the interior seonjayeon(fan shape rafter) and in the unique design of crossbeam meoricho(flower decorations on each side of pillars). Yeongnamnu's crossbeam meoricho is janggu-meoricho type(meoricho with hourglass figure) with full-shape lotus and half-shape flower decorations. And it can be said that, dragon portrait painted on the border of lotus and flower decorations in green and yellow is a very unique style of dancheong, for the reason that it has scarcely been used before and ever since. The portrait of four heavenly creatures painted on each corner of seonjayeon is also found to be unique in design, for the reason that the design has rarely been used throughout history, with only two exceptions in mural tombs of Goguryeo and folding screen in Injeongjeon Hall of Changdeokgung P alace. With its unique and authentic feature along with its rarity in number, the portrait of four heavenly creatures painted on Yeongnamnu can be considered as quite symbolic and important.

  • Through color analysis and survey of seasonal display cases using flower materials in department stores, hotels, and retailers, which are representative commercial spaces in Korea and abroad, it is designed to recognize the need for color planning that applies seasonal colors and emotional adjectives, away from the traditional method of relying on the season, shape and texture of materials, in the process of flower displays. The research method analyzed the colors used in the 48 domestic and foreign commercial space flower display cases collected. Based on this, the first expert questionnaire collected adjectives extraction and seasonal coordinates reminiscent of the case and examined the suitability of emotional adjectives extracted by the second public survey. The research results extracted typical colors and tones of spring, summer, fall, and winter, and recognized seasonal emotional adjectives. Based on these results, We could see that the color scheme should be advanced in the flower display, which used to depend solely on the shape or texture of the flower material, to produce the intended emotional design.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the optimum dosage of gamma rays for inducing artificial mutation of several mutant characters in the flue-cured tobacco. 1) In Hicks and BY 104, the gammarays irradiation has no significantly different effect on seed germination from the control. However, the average dosage for 50% growth inhibition was 25-30kr for all the varieties tested, which inhibition 46-52% and 43-57% of the seedling growths for Hicks and BY 104, respectively. 2) A mutant line 83H-5 was selected from Hicks by irradiation gamma ray at the level of 30kr. It has white flower, more resistance to bacterial wilt, Pssudomonas solanacearum, lower plant and stalk height, narrower leaf width, larger leaf shape index(lento width) and later days to flower when compared with the original variety Hicks. 3) White flower was recessive to pink flower in F, and Br (F1 X Hicks) progenies. F2 population of the cross gave segregation ratio of 3 pink flower:1 white flower, and B, (F1 X 83H-5) Population gave 1:1 ratio. Results showed that the white flower character is governed by a single recessive gene.

  • In this study, it is investigated the types and the compounding method of flower patterns and the uses of flower patterned fabrics in Chosun Dynasty. Research was done through the references of exhumed clothing during 16-17th century. Our ancestors had used the various flower patterns based on Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism onto the fabrics. The flower patterns on the fabrics were expressed with the other patterns such as treasure patterns, letter patterns or bird patterns. And the flower patterns symbolized the various good meanings such as longevity, integrity and prosperity etc. In the order of the percentage, the types of the flower patterns were shown Lotus(27.31%), Arabesque(26.85%), Japanese apricot(14.81%), Peony(8.79%), Flowering plants(6.94%), Chrysanthemum(6.01%), Pomegranate(2.31%) patterns and so on. Especially the Lotus pattern was shown up most frequently. That of shape was designed as blooming(開花), full bloom(滿開) and the side of flower(側面). By the compounding method, the compound types mixed with the other patterns were used much more than the individual types composed by its own pattern. The flower patterns were used a lot in Jeogori(Jacket) regardless of the ganders and in men's Po(coat) including Cheollik(天翼), Dappo(胡), Jeonbok(戰服), Dahnryoung(團領), etc. Also contrary to these days, the flower patterned fabrics had come out in the shrouds. Judging from these facts, our ancestors wished that the meaning of the immortal life was included in the flower pattern.

  • A lotus flower pattern of the shape of straight and pointed petals has the forms whose lotus flowers are pointed, and is one of the representative forms of lotus flower pattern of Baekjae along with a round and a triangle protruded style. This style of lotus flower pattern was applied to roof-end tiles, halos of Buddhist images, containers of Buddha's bones, head supports, etc. from the Hanseong period to the Sabi period of Baekjae. However most of lotus flower patterns that remain today were used for the tiles of the Sabi period. Many of them were produced under the influence of the Northern Dynasties and the Southern Dynasties of China, and of Goryeo, which implies the active cultural exchange of Baekjae at that time. Among the present lotus flower patterns of the shape of the straight and pointed petals, that of the earliest time is from Gyeongdang district of Poongnab mud castle and belongs to the mid-fifth century. However there is a higher chance that the gradual subsequent excavation and research will find some tiles of the earlier period and other styles can also be unearthed.
