This experiment was conducted to examine the effect of injecting cool air from an abandoned mine during the summer time for the growth of Doritaenopsis. The air temperature of abandoned mine in Boryeong was $12{\sim}14^{\circ}C$. The day and night temperatures were set at $22^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, from June to August in the experimental plastic house. This temperature range was within the suitable range for floral induction in Doritaenopsis. Average outside temperature was $28.4{\sim}32.8^{\circ}C$. The 3% of the crop developed flower stalk in 20 days after the treatment initiation, 65% in 45 days, and 100% in 90 days. The flower stalk length was short (48.7cm) in 30 days and long (62.4cm) in 60 days of treatment. The flower stalk length became longer as time passed. Flower spike and number of florets per stalk displayed the same tendency. Number of nodes was 6~7 and was not affected by the period. The first blooming appeared on 15th of September at 45 days and blooming tended to appear late as the period is lengthened. When the cool air from an abandoned mine was injected, the crop formed flower stalk three months earlier and bloomed four months earlier than the untreated control.

This research was performed to investigate the effect of light source and light quality in night break treatment on the growth and flowering of standard chrysanthemum. It was processed 4 hours (22:00-02:00) night break using LED 590, 610, 630, 660, 680nm and fluorescent lamp (mixed light of 480+540+610nm) in standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' for 40 days from transplanting. The days to flower budding from short-day treatment of 'Baekma' were the longgest at fluorescent treatment (21.3 days) and were the shorttest at LED 590nm treatment (15.8 days) among all treatments. The days to flower budding from short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longger with 18.0 days, 17.8 days, and 17.7 days at the fluorescent, LED 610nm, and 660nm treatments. And it was the shortest with 15.1 days in LED 590nm treatment. Similarly, the days to flowering from short-day treatment of 'Baekma' was the longgest with 56.9 days at fluorescent treatment, and was the shorttest in 51.6 days about LED 590 nm treatment. The days to flowering from short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longer at fluorescent (56.0 days) and LED 660nm (56.7 days) treatments and was shortest at LED 590nm (52.9 days) among all treatments. Therefore, inhibition of flower bud initiation and flowering were the most effective under fluorescent treatment in case of 'Baekma', and fluorescent and LED 660nm treatments in case of 'Jinba'. The length and weight of cut flower of 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' were most excellent in fluorescent treatment in which the floral differentiation suppression effect was the best. Consequently, as to the growth and flowering of standard chrysanthemum, the treatment which was suitable as the light source and light quality for night break is regarded as the fluorescent lamp, and also under LED 660nm up to a certain level.

This study was conducted to establishment of in vitro micropropagation through induction of multiple shoots from axillary bud culture in Calanthe discolor Lindl. Shoots initiation from axillary bud was the most effective on half strength MS medium supplemented with $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA and $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ TDZ during four weeks of dark culture followed by culture under a 16-h photoperiod. Multiple shoots (12.5 shoots per explant) were proliferated on half strength MS medium containing $4.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ TDZ and $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IBA. On the other hands, the abnormally emerged shoots during the multiple shoot proliferation stage were recovered to normal shoots on half strength MS hormone free medium. Multiple shoots were well elongated and rooted on half strength MS medium with $0.1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA. The plantlets were acclimatized up to 100% on TKS substrate after pretreating with $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA for 30 min. and these plantlets showed good growth as well.
Soluble carbohydrates and free amino acids in the terminal buds of Pinus elliottii were analyzed to understand the nutritional status of the buds during the period of female strobilus initiation. Grafted, 18-year-old slash pine trees in a seed orchard were divided into two groups, abundant-flowering (AFG) and poor-flowering group (PFG) according to their flowering history. Four types of terminal buds, with two types from each group, were examined: (1) large buds in upper crown (female-producing buds) and small buds in lower crown (male-producing) in AFG, (2) large buds in upper crown (vegetative buds) and small buds in lower crown (male-producing) in PFG. Bud samples were collected four times from late July to early September. Free sugars and free amino acids (75% ethanol-soluble) were determined by gas chromatography and automatic analysis, respectively. Sugar content in the large buds of both groups was greater than in the small buds of the same group. Fructose and glucose were major sugars found in the bud tissue. Arginine was the most abundant amino acid in all four types of buds, with the concentration increased from 23% in late July to 60% in early September. Arginine and total amino acid content in the female-producing buds of AFG was much lower than three other types of buds. When female-producing buds and male-producing buds of AFG were compared in their arginine content, the former contained about same amount as the latter in late July, but showed one-fourth of the latter in early September. The low level of argining in the female-producing buds suggested a minimal or negative role of arginine in the initiation of female flower primordia. A higher sugar to amino acid ratio was observed with female-producing buds of AFG than with vegetative or male-producing buds of either flowering group. The low amino acid content in the femaleproducing buds suggested that initiation of female strobilus primordia was associated with temporary reduction in the metabolic activity of the buds.

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of grafting timing, rootstock cut timing and leaf removal with promalin ($GA_{4+7}+BA$) treatments on the maiden tree growth, lateral development and flower bud initiation. In mid-March 1997, two-year-old M.9-T337 rootstocks selected with trunk diameter over 1 cm were planted in the field. Chip budding with 'Fuji' scion on M.9-T337 rootstock budded in mid-April was earlier in sprouting than chip budding in mid-June. Late cutting chip budding (LCCB) with 'Fuji' scion on M.9-T337 rootstock was lower in the failed budding percentage with 14% than that of early cutting chip budding (ECCB). Especially, ECCB in April was not suitable for scion growth such as uniformity with high percentage of failed tree. Grafting timing in mid-June and rootstock cutting timing of LCCB induced more branches and flower buds than other treatments. Removal of 8 to 10 uppermost immature leaves on central leader stem and application of Promalin 250 mg/L after every 30 cm of terminal growth produced a 189 cm tall tree with 9 flower buds and 14.2 short lateral shoot from 30 to 35 cm long in length in 1998. Promalin increased branching on second-season growth and, when combined with leaf removal, resulted in uniform distribution of branches along the central leader stem.
BACKGROUND: The successful management of jujube trees depends on maintaining a balance between reproductive and vegetative growth. In general, heading cuts of trunk stimulate rather vegetative growth, but could decrease flower initiation. This study was conducted to establish a heading-back pruning severities at planting in the one year old 'Daeneung' jujube whip nursery tree by investigating vegetative growth and fruit yield. METHODS AND RESULTS: The heading back pruning severity was assigned as 5 different ranges as follow: one bud (TR-10, heading back pruning was 10 cm above the ground), three buds (TR-30), five buds (TR-50), seven buds (TR-70), and nine buds (TR-90) were left of scion. The number of buds on whip trunk was correlated to the central leader length and increment of trunk cross-sectional area, negatively, and to the tree height and canopy volume, positively. The yields in the TR-50 treatment were higher about 2 times than other treatments. The fruit diameter was not significantly different among the treatments. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that the optimum location of heading-back pruning in one year old 'Daeneung' jujube tree was 50 cm above the ground as evaluated by the balance of reproductive and vegetative growth.

In this study, we investigated the effect of nutrient supply periods on the fruit growth and quality of 'Duke' blueberry. The nutrient solution was contained with NO3-N 4.6, NH4-N 3.4, PO4-P 3.3, K 3.0, Ca 4.6, and Mg 2.2 mmol·L-1, and EC in the nutrient solution was 1.5 ds.m-1. In 2017 and 2018, an individual blueberry bush was supplied with 8 L of the nutrient solution per week. In 2018, the drainage water quality of growing medium and fruit quality was investigated. The nutrient supply was started from April 01, and stopped at 15 days intervals as follows, 15 days before final harvest, at the final harvest date (June 30), 15 days after final harvest (DAFH), 30 DAFH, 45 DAFH, and 60 DAFH. The content of inorganic components in the growing medium was not significantly different by the stop time of nutrient supply, but the content of phosphorus (P2O5) tended to increase with the delay of stop time of nutrient supply. There were no significant differences in the fruit quality characteristics in terms of size, sugar content, and acidity among the different stop time of nutrient supply. The blueberry yield was tended to decrease with the delay of periods of nutrient supply, while the lowest yield of 1.8 kg was recorded when nutrient supply stopped at 45 and 60 DAFH.

This study was conducted to determine the optimum conditions of inducing callus, proliferating callus, forming somatic embryos, and regenerating plantlets via somatic embryogenesis, for the purpose of producing artificial seeds and substantially developing plant factory technologies that can be employed to all seasons production of Bupleurum plants. Callus was efficiently induced from leaf tissues at three leaf stage in the MS medium supplemented with 2, 4-D 2mg /1 and thidiazuron(TDZ) 0.lmg /1. Callus induction from leaf tissues at maturity was mostly effective in the mixture of 2,4- D 2mg /1 and TDZ 1.0mg /1 while that from flower bud tissues was fairly good in the MS medium containing 2,4-D 1 or 2mg /1.Callus was formed in 15 to 20 days after culture initiation in the MS media supplemented with 2, 4- D 1-2mg /1 and TDZ 0.l-1.0mg /1. Such hormones as kinetin 3mg /1, GA 1mg /1, and the mixture of GA 1mg /1 and TDZ 1mg /1 effected markedly to proliferate the callus cells. The optimum temperature and light intensity for callus culture were found to be $25^{\circ}C$ and 3000 Lux, respectively. Direct plant regeneration from cultured callus was fairly made on hormone-free MS or half-strength MS medium. Somatic embryogenesis was most frequently observed in hormone-free media:60 somatic embryos per 20ml in MS medium and 28 somatic embryos per 20ml in half -strength MS medium. There were three stages-globular, heart, and torpedo-in development of somatic embryos, among which globular stage was more frequently observed in MS medium rather than in half-strength MS medium. Somatic embryos induced from suspension culture fairly differentiated a number of shoots and roots on hormone-free and half-strength MS solid medium.
The physiological and biochemical role of potassium for upland crops according to recent research reports and the nutritional status of potassium in Korea were reviewed. Since physical and chemical characteristics of potassium ion are different from those of sodium, potassium can not completely be replaced by sodium and replacement must be limited to minimum possible functional area. Specific roles of potassium seem to keep fine structure of biological membranes such as thylacoid membrane of chloroplast in the most efficient form and to be allosteric effector and conformation controller of various enzymes principally in carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Potassium is essential to improve the efficiency of phoro- and oxidative- phosphorylation and involve deeply in all energy required metabolisms especially synthesis of organic matter and their translocation. Potassium has many important, physiological functions such as maintenance of osmotic pressure and optimum hydration of cell colloids, consequently uptake and translocation of water resulting in higher water use efficiency and of better subcellular environment for various physiological and biochemical activities. Potassium affects uptake and translocation of mineral nutrients and quality of products. potassium itself in products may become a quality criteria due to potassium essentiality for human beings. Potassium uptake is greatly decreased by low temperature and controlled by unknown feed back mechanism of potassium in plants. Thus the luxury absorption should be reconsidered. Total potassium content of upland soil in Korea is about 3% but the exchangeable one is about 0.3 me/100g soil. All upland crops require much potassium probably due to freezing and cold weather and also due to wet damage and drought caused by uneven rainfall pattern. In barley, potassium should be high at just before freezing and just after thawing and move into grain from heading for higher yield. Use efficiency of potassium was 27% for barley and 58% in old uplands, 46% in newly opened hilly lands for soybean. Soybean plant showed potassium deficiency symptom in various fields especially in newly opened hilly lands. Potassium criteria for normal growth appear 2% $K_2O$ and 1.0 K/(Ca+Mg) (content ratio) at flower bud initiation stage for soybean. Potassium requirement in plant was high in carrot, egg plant, chinese cabbage, red pepper, raddish and tomato. Potassium content in leaves was significantly correlated with yield in chinese cabbage. Sweet potato. greatly absorbed potassium subsequently affected potassium nutrition of the following crop. In the case of potassium deficiency, root showed the greatest difference in potassium content from that of normal indicating that deficiency damages root first. Potatoes and corn showed much higher potassium content in comparison with calcium and magnesium. Forage crops from ranges showed relatively high potassium content which was significantly and positively correlated with nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium content. Percentage of orchards (apple, pear, peach, grape, and orange) insufficient in potassium ranged from 16 to 25. The leaves and soils from the good apple and pear orchards showed higher potassium content than those from the poor ones. Critical ratio of $K_2O/(CaO+MgO)$ in mulberry leaves to escape from winter death of branch tip was 0.95. In the multiple croping system, exchangeable potassium in soils after one crop was affected by the previous crops and potassium uptake seemed to be related with soil organic matter providing soil moisture and aeration. Thus, the long term and quantitative investigation of various forms of potassium including total one are needed in relation to soil, weather and croping system. Potassium uptake and efficiency may be increased by topdressing, deep placement, slow-releasing or granular fertilizer application with the consideration of rainfall pattern. In all researches for nutritional explanation including potassium of crop yield reasonable and practicable nutritional indices will most easily be obtained through multifactor analysis.
