  • The stability of low-speed spinning process exhibiting spinline flow-induced crystallization (FIC) with no neck-like spinline deformation has been investigated using the method of linear stability analysis. Effects of various process conditions such as fluid viscoelasticity and the spinline cooling on the spinning stability have been found closely related to the development of the spinline crystallinity. It also has been found that the FIC makes the system less stable or more unstable than no FIC cases when the spinline crystallinity reaches its maximum possible value, whereas the FIC generally stabilizes the system if the crystallinity doesn't reach its maximum value on the spinline. It is believed that the destabilizing effect of the FIC on low-speed spinning when the crystallinity is fully developed on the spinline is due to the reduction of the real spinning length available for deformation on the spinline. On the other hand, the increased spinline tension caused by the FIC when the maximum crystallinity is not reached on the spinline and thus no reduction in the spinning length occurs, makes the sensitivity of spinline variables to external disturbances smaller and hence stabilizes the system. These linear stability results are consistent with the findings by nonlinear transient simulation, as first reported by Lee et al. (2005b).

  • Landslide prediction modeling has been regarded as one of the important environmental applications in GIS. While, landslide stability in a certain area as collateral process for prediction modeling can be characterized by DEM-based hydrological features such as flow-direction, flow-accumulation, flow-length, wetness index, and so forth. In this study, Slope-Area plot methodology followed by stability index mapping with these hydrological variables is firstly performed for stability analysis with actual landslide occurrences at Boeun area, Korea, and then Landslide prediction modeling based on likelihood ratio model for landslide potential mapping is carried out; in addition, KOMPSAT EOC imagery is used to detect the locations and scalped scale of Landslide occurrences. These two tasks are independently processed for preparation of unbiased criteria, and then results of those are qualitatively compared. As results of this case study, land stability analysis based on DEM-based hydrological variables directly reflects terrain characteristics; however, the results in the form of land stability map by landslide prediction model are not fully matched with those of hydrologic landslide analysis due to the heuristic scheme based on location of existed landslide occurrences within prediction approach, especially zones of not-investigated occurrences. Therefore, it is expected that the resets on the space-robustness of landslide prediction models in conjunction with DEM-based landslide stability analysis can be effectively utilized to search out unrevealed or hidden landslide occurrences.

  • The critical conditions marking the onset of thermally induced vortices over an inclined iso-thermal plate are investigated using the linear stability theory. The stability equations are simplified by estimating the orders of magnitude of respective terms. The analysis is carried out under the assumption that for the system of large Prandtl numbers temperature disturbances are initiated within the conventional thermal boundary layer of the basic flow. The stability criteria obtained from the present results agree well with those of the existing quasi-parallel flow models. In addition it is found that the critical conditions generate the heat transfer correlation in good agreement with experiments. Therefore, it is suggested that the validity of existing theoretical models will be reexamined.

  • This paper present a practical method for long-term voltage stability simulation based on a governor-response power flow. Governor-response power flow (GPF) is to model the long-term system response in the interval from 3 to 30 seconds after disturbance. In this paper, it is assumed that the GPF model ran capture the system state before load restoration starts in contingent conditions. This paper discusses the applicability of GPF to long-term simulation for voltage stability analysis and then explains the GPF formulation and the procedure of the proposed simulation. In addition the paper includes the simulation results with the modified New England 39-bus system.

  • Flexible cantilever pipes conveying fluids with high velocity are analysed for their dynamic response and stability behaviour. The Young's modulus and mass per unit length of the pipe material have a stochastic distribution. The stochastic fields, that model the fluctuations of Young's modulus and mass density are characterized through their respective means, variances and autocorrelation functions or their equivalent power spectral density functions. The stochastic non self-adjoint partial differential equation is solved for the moments of characteristic values, by treating the point fluctuations to be stochastic perturbations. The second-order statistics of vibration frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. The critical flow velocity is first evaluated using the averaged eigenvalue equation. Through the eigenvalue equation, the statistics of vibration frequencies are transformed to yield critical flow velocity statistics. Expressions for the bounds of eigenvalues are obtained, which in turn yield the corresponding bounds for critical flow velocities.

  • Rainfall induced landslides are disasters causing sever damage on the human life and the infrastructures. In this paper, a simplified procedure to evaluate the slope stability problems induced by rainfall by modifying the Iverson's pressure head dispersion model. The proposed approach extends the applicability of the Iverson's model in to the cases of higher rainfall intensity than the permeability of the soil by incorporating the existence of overland flow. In addition, the Manning equation is applied to calculated the depth of overland flow. From the calculated depth of overland flow, shear stress acting on the surface is included for the driving component triggering the landslides. From the analysis of a case study, the long term rainfall alters the stability of slope.

  • Field investigation was performed right after the occurrence of debris flow at Jinbu area. Geomorphic and geotechnical characteristics were investigated and rain fall data were collected. Based on these data, seepage and slope stability analysis was performed to verify the behavior of ground water and factor of safety of the slope according to the rainfall intensity and time. As a results, the minimum value of factor of safety achieved in long time after the moment of maximum precipitation rate. And it is confirmed that the factor of safety is susceptible to ground water level rather than rainfall intensity.
