  • A new improved inviscid separation model to calculate the mean flow past circular cylinders is proposed. The wake region is modeled by a pair of vortex sheets which emerge from the separation points and are allowed to move freely with the local stream. The vortex strength assumes a constant value for some initial distance which is related to the pressure drag and gradually decreases to zero as the sheet moves farther away from the body. This vorticity distribution automatically takes care of the length parameter which has been one of the deficiencies in the existing models. The procedure is tested against various experimental data and the agreement is quite good for both sub and super-critical regimes. The comparison with an existing model is also given.

  • Porthole die extrusion is profitable to manufacture long tube with hollow section. The material through portholes is gathered within chamber and welded under high pressure. This weldability which classifies the quality of tube product is affected by several variables and die shape. But, porthole die extrusion has been executed on the experience of experts due to the complicated die assembly and complexity of metal flow. Analytic approaches that are useful in profitable die design and in the improvement of productivity are inevitably demanded. Therefore, the objective of this study is respectively to analyze the behavior of metal flow and to determine welding pressure of hot extrusion product according to the various billet temperature, bearing length and tube thickness by FE analysis and its results are compared with tube expanding tests.

  • Cadmium sulfide (CdS) thin film for flexible optical device applications were prepared at $H_2/(Ar+H_2)$ flow ratios on polyethersulfon (PES) flexible polymer substrates at room temperature by radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique. The CdS thin films deposited at room temperature showed a (002) preferred orientation and the smooth surface morphologies. Films deposited at a hydrogen flow ratio of 25% exhibited a photo- and dark-sheet resistance of about 50 and $2.7\;{\times}\;10^5\;{\Omega}/square$, respectively. From the result of the bending test, CdS films exhibit a strong adhesion with the PES polymer substrates and the $Al_2O_3$ passivation layer deposited on the CdS films only shows an increase of the resistance of 8.4% after exposure for 120 h in air atmosphere.

  • Fillers have been used for papermaking in order to enhance the optical properties, to improve sheet formation, printability and dimensional stability and to reduce the furnish cost. However, filler particles in paper interfere with fiber-fiber bonding, resulting in decreased paper strength. In order to increase filler content in paper without sacrificing too much paper strength, dual addition technology of fillers was investigated. As a first step, the effects of thick stock addition of fillers on paper properties and papermaking process were elucidated. It was shown that thick stock addition of fillers could increase paper strength at a given filler content. No significant adverse effects on formation, drainage and filler retention were observed. However, bulk of paper was reduced with thick stock addition of fillers, which shall be resolved with regulating other factors such as the mixing ratio of pulps and type of fillers.

  • In this paper, the finite element method was used for the flow and strength analysis of aluminum alloy under friction stir welding. The simulations were carried out using Sysweld s/w, and the modeling of the sheet was executed using Unigraphics NX6 s/w. The welding variables for the analysis were the shoulder diameter, rotating speed, and welding speed of the tool. Additionally, a three-way factorial design method was applied to confirm the effect of the welding variables on the flow and strength analysis with variance analysis. From these results, the rotating speed had the greatest influence on the maximum temperature, and the maximum temperature was $578.84{\pm}12.72$ at a confidence interval of 99%. The greater the rotating speed and shoulder diameter, the greater the difference between maximum and minimum temperature. Furthermore, the shoulder diameter had the largest influence on von Mises stress, and the von Mises stress was $184.54{\pm}12.62$ at a confidence interval of 99%. In addition to the increased shoulder diameter, welding speed, and rotating speed of the tool increased the von Mises stress.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the interaction of vortices over a delta wing with leading edge extension(LEX) through the off-surface flow visualization and the 5-hole probe measurements of the wing wake region. Especially, the application of a new visualization technique is employed by ultrasonic humidifier water droplet and laser beam sheet. The results, both the off-surface visualization and the 5-hole probe, show that LEX tends to stabilize the vortices of the delta wing up to the high angle of attack even though the model is yawed. With increasing yaw, the windward leading edge vortex moves inward, and closer to the wing surface, while the leeward vortex moves outwards and away from the wing surface. The vortex interaction is promoted in the windward side, and is delayed in the leeward side.

  • This study investigates the effects of the size of copper sheets on the plastic deformation behavior in a microscale deep drawing process. Tensile tests are conducted on the copper sheets to study the flow stress of the materials with different grain sizes before carrying out the microscale deep drawing experiments. After the tensile tests, a novel desktop-sized microscale deep drawing system is used to perform the microscale deep drawing process. A series of microscale deep drawing experiments are subsequently performed, and the experimental results indicate that an increase in the grain size results in the reduction of the deformation load of the copper sheets due to the effects of the surface grain. The results also show that the blank holder gap improves both the formability of copper sheets and the material flow.

  • The present study adopted the PTV method for the velocity acquisition. The system consists of an image grabber built-in a personal computer and a laser-based sheet light projector and particle identification softwares. Velocity vectors are obtained, by PTV and they are used as velocity components for Poisson equation for pressure. Related boundary conditions and no-slip condition at solid wall and the linear velocity extrapolation on the upper side of cavity are well examined for the present study. For calculation of pressure, resolution of grid is basically $40{\times}40$ and 2-dimensional uniform mesh using MAC staggered grid is adopted. The result of experiment reveal that, newly suggested measuring method is capable of estimating pressure and velocity distribution of flow field reasonably.

  • An experimental study was carried out in a vertical channel with square heat source by visualization equipment with laser apparatus. The image processing system consists of one commercial image board slit into a personal computer and 2-dimensional sheet light by Argon-Ion Laser with cylindrical lens and flow picture recording system. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by 2-D PIV system which adopted two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm. Heat source was uniform heat flux(5W). The obtained results show various flow patterns such as the kinetic energy distribution and the turbulent kinetic energy distribution.
