A Numerical Study on the Flow Fields in the Continuous Casting Mold with Electromagnetic Brake (EMBR이 적용된 연속주조 몰드 내부에서의 유동장 해석)

  • We developed a computer program to simulate the flow field in the presence of electro-magnetic fields. The steady, two-dimensional conservation equations for mass and momentum were solved simultaneously with Maxwell equations for electro-magnetic fields. Using this program, a numerical analysis was carried out to analyze the fluid flow in the continuous casting mold with electromagnetic brake. The effects of magnetic fields size, nozzle angle and EMBR yoke position on the flow fields in the continuous casting were investigated in the present study. The flow fields with EMBR were compared with those without EMBR. We also investigated the distribution of tracer concentration as a function of time in order to calculate their residence time in the mold with EMBR. By controlling the flow fields properly using EMBR, we can prevent the direct flow impaction on the wall which can give a damage on the mold surface and reduce surface defects of stainless steel sheet products.

  • This paper suggests the new technology to control metal flow in orther to change of the cold forging from conventional deep drawing forming. This technology can be summarized the complex forming, which consists of bulk forming and sheet forming, and multi-action forging, which be performed double action press. The proposed technology is applied to hub clutch model which is part of auto-transmission for automobile. The purpose of this study is to investigate the material flow behavior of hub clutch through control the relative velocity ratio and the stroke of mandrel and punch using the flow forming technique. First of all, the finite element simulations are applied to analyse optimal process conditions to prevent flow defect(necking defect etc.) from non-uniform metal flow, then the results are compared with the plasticine model material experiments. The punch load for real material is predict from similarity law. Finally, the model material experiment results are in good agreement with the FE simulation ones.

An Experimental Study on the Flow characteristics in the Plenum Chamber (플레넘 챔버 내의 유동 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The MPI engine becomes increasingly popular because it meets two requirements of stringent pollutant emission and the lower fuel consumption. Even though supplies the same amount of fuel to each cylinder , it is hard to precisely control the air-duel ration due to the different amount of air flowing into each cylinder. The uniformity of air-fuel ration in each cylinder is considerably affected by the plenum chamber configuration . This study is focused on experimentally analyzing the flow characteristics within the plenum chamber In the present experiment , steady and valve dynamic state flow tests are performed and the flow field inside the plenum chamber is visualized and measured by utilizing a laser sheet visualization technique and a PTV method. These measured results indicate that the flow structure in the plenum chamber is highly influenced by the plenum chamber configurations, suction flow rates, crank speeds and so on.

Interaction between Raindrops Splash and Sheet Flow in Interrill Erosion of Steep Hillslopes (급경사면의 세류간 침식에서 빗물튀김과 면상흐름의 상호작용)

  • Interrill erosion by the rainfall is divided into a detachment of soil particles by raindrop splash when raindrops having kinetic energy strike on the surface soil and a sediment transport by sheet flow of surface runoff. Rainfall kinetic energy is widely used as an indicator expressing the potential ability to separate the soil particles from soil mass. In this study, the soil erosion experiments of rainfall simulation were operated to evaluate the effects of rainfall kinetic energy on interrill erosion as using the strip cover to control raindrop impact. The kinetic energy from rainfall simulator was 0.58 times to that of natural rainfall. Surface runoff and subsurface runoff increased and decreased respectively with increase of rainfall intensity. Surface runoff discharge from plots of non-cover was 1.82 times more than that from plots with cover. The rainfall kinetic energy influenced on the starting time of surface and subsurface runoff. Soil erosion quantity greatly varied according to existence of the surface cover that can intercept rainfall energy. Sediment yields by the interaction between raindrop splash and sheet flow increased 3.6~5.9 times and the increase rates of those decreased with rainfall intensity. As a results from analysis of relationship between stream power and sediment yields, rainfall kinetic energy increased the transport capacity according to increase of surface runoff as well as the detachment of soil particles by raindrop splash.

Hydraulic Characteristics of Fluid-Granule Mixed Flow in Embankment of Noncohesive Materials Due to Overflow (越流에 의한 非粘着性 堤體에서의 流體-固體 混合流의 水理特性)

  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis for a velocity profile of fluid-granule mixed flow and a sheet erosion of an embankment having noncohesive materials due to overflow. The velocity profile were obtained using the stress-strain relationships based on a grain-inertia regime and an erosion depth was obtained using dynamic Coulomb criterion. Experiments were performed to compare with theoretical values and fairly good agreements were found. Theoretical results on velocity profiles, which can be applied to any type of velocity profiles in a fluid-granule mixed flow, showed a considerable improvement for the existing theories on a debris flow. for a design purpose, formulas and figure diagrams for obtaining a velocity profile, an erosion depth, an overflow depth and a granular discharge were proposed for given values of a flood discharge, particle properties and embankment scale.

  • A low order panel method based on the perturbation potential is applied for prediction of performance of blown-flap rudders. In order to improve the solution behavior at the large angle of attacks, the geometry of the trailing wake sheet is computed by aligning freely with the local flow. The effect of the wake sheet roll-up is also included with use of a high order panel method. The flow in the gap between the main component and the flap of the rudder is modeled as Couette flow. The effects of the gap and the flow jet are included in application of a kinematic and a dynamic boundary condition on the inlet and the outlet of the gap as well as on the flap and the wake. The results with the present method are compared with existing experimental data. The method is shown to be capable of determining accurately the flow characteristics even for large flap angles.

Numerical Study on Vortex Structures in a Two-dimensional Bluff-Body Burner in the Transitional Flow Regime

  • Vortical structures are investigated numerically for both cold and combusting flows from a two-dimensional bluff-body burner in the transitional flow regime from steady to unsteady state. The Reynolds number of the central fuel flow is varied from 10 to 230 at a fixed air Reynolds number of 400. The flame sheet model of infinite chemical reaction and unit Lewis number are assumed in the simulation. The temperature dependence of the viscosity and diffusivity of the gas mixture is also considered. The vortex shedding is observed depending on the fuel flow. For cold flow, four different types of vortical structure are identified. However, for combusting flow of methane-air system the vortical structures change significantly due to a large amount of heat release during the combustion process, in contract to cold flow.

  • The Purpose of this study is to give the hydrologically basic data for the development of water resources in Korea and a quantity of daily average precipitation and its frequency in a year are investigated to study the presumption which is affected to river flow. Characteristics of precipitation is poor as source of water resources compared with its efficiency. So, because of such characteristics of precipitation, river flow also is in harmony and distribution of river flow comes to the result of irregularity, that is, range of river coefficiet between the quantity of maximum river flow and others river flow is big, and it is insufficient as source of water resources. Yearly river flow being expressed by daily unit indicates the ratio(%) of distribution to total yearly river flow, and the model of hydrograph is drawn up. The gives the basis to make yearly water balance sheet. This study is not completed, yet but in forth-coming days, the water will try continuously to give more correct basis for the development of water resources according to a great deal of data.

Flow Characteristics around a NACA0012 Airfoil by PIV (PIV에 의한 NACA0012 익 주변의 유동특성)

  • The flow characteristics of a NACA0012 airfoil was investigated in rectangular water circulating channel. The flow patterns around an airfoil at various angles of attack between $0^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}\;at\;Re=1.91{\times}104$ were visualized and measured with 2-D PIV system and laser sheet illumination. Flow behaviors such as velocity distribution, kinetic energy and flow separation etc. around an airfoil were obtained by means of 2-D PIV system. The behaviors show the difference of flow pattern clearly and separation phenomena become more active with increasing angle of attack.

SERRATION MECHANISM OF AA5182/POLYPROPYLENE/AA5182 SANDWICH SHEETS

  • The AA5182/polypropylene/AA5182(AA/PP/AA) sandwich sheets have been developed for application to automotive body panels in future lightweight vehicles with significant weight reduction. It has been reported that the AA5182 aluminum sheet shows $L\"{u}ders$ band because of dissolved Mg atoms that cause fabrication process problem, especially surface roughness. The examination of serration behavior has been made after the tensile deformation of the AA/PP/AA sandwich sheets as well as that of the AA5182 aluminum skins at room and elevated temperatures. All sandwich sheets and the AA5182 aluminum skin showed serration behavior on their flow curves. However, the magnitude of serration was significantly diminished in the sandwich sheet with high volume fraction of the polypropylene core. According to the results of the analysis of the surface roughness following the tensile test, $L\"{u}ders$ band depth of the sandwich sheet evidently showed lower than that of the AA5182 aluminum skin. The strain rate sensitivity, m-value, of the AA5182 aluminum skin was -0.006. By attaching these skins to the polypropylene core, which has relatively large positive value of 0.050, m-value of the sandwich sheets changed to the positive value. The serration mechanism of the sandwich sheets was quantitatively investigated in the point of the effect on polypropylene thickness variation, that on the strain rate sensitivity and that on the localized stress state.
