소수력발전용 횡류수차의 러너 블레이드 깃수에 따른 성능해석 (Performance Analysis of a Cross Flow Hydro Turbine by Runner Blade Number)

  • Performance improvement of Small hydro turbine is a very important subject to solve in the stage of introduction and development of the turbine. Cross-flow hydro turbine should be also studied more in detail for the turbine performance in order to extend the sites of application. In order to improve the turbine performance, the effect of the turbine shape on the turbine performance should be examined. Therefore, the effect of runner blade number on the turbine performance is investigated by use of a commercial CFD code. The results show that runner blade number gives remarkable effect on the efficiency and output power of the turbine. Pressure on the surface of the runner blade changes considerably by the blade number at Stage 1, but relatively small change of velocity distribution occurs in the flow passage.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on compressible convex-corner flows, which correspond to an upper surface of a deflected flap of an aircraft wing. The flow is naturally developed along a flat plate with two different lengths, resulting in different incoming boundary layer thicknesses or Reynolds numbers. It is found that boundary layer Reynolds number, ranging from $8.04{\times}10^4$ to $1.63{\times}10^5$, has a minor influence on flow expansion and compression near the corner apex in the transonic flow regime, but not for the subsonic expansion flow. For shock-induced separated flow, higher peak pressure fluctuations are observed at smaller Reynolds number, corresponding to the excursion phenomena and the shorter region of shock-induced boundary layer separation. An explicit correlation of separation length with deflection angle is also presented.

  • In the jet engines on the aircrafts cruising at high altitude over 20 km and subsonic speed, the Reynolds number in terms of the compressor blades becomes very low. In such an operating condition with low Reynolds number, it is widely reported that total pressure loss of the air flow through the compressor cascades increases dramatically due to separation of the boundary layer and the secondary-flow. But the detail of flow mechanisms causes the total pressure loss has not been fully understood yet. In the present study, two series of numerical investigations were conducted to study the effects of Reynolds number on the aerodynamic characteristics of compressor cascades. At first, the incompressible flow fields in the two-dimensional compressor cascade composed of C4 airfoils were numerically simulated with various values of Reynolds number. Compared with the corresponding experimental data, the numerically estimated trend of total pressure loss as a function of Reynolds number showed good agreement with that of experiment. From the visualized numerical results, the thickness of boundary layer and wake were found to increase with the decrease of Reynolds number. Especially at very low Reynolds number, the separation of boundary layer and vortex shedding were observed. The other series, as the preparatory investigation, the flow fields in the transonic compressor, NASA Rotor 37, were simulated under the several conditions, which corresponded to the operation at sea level static and at 10 km of altitude with low density and temperature. It was found that, in the case of operation at high altitude, the separation region on the blade surface became lager, and that the radial and reverse flow around the trailing edge become stronger than those under sea level static condition.

  • An investigation of low Reynolds number flow in nozzles and diffusers which are widely used in the valveless micropump is presented. Flow characteristics in the nozzle and diffuser are explained in view of viscous effect and flow oscillation induced by pumping membrane. These calculation results show that the rectification property of valveless micropump is due to a flow separation in the diffuser and the separation is largely originated from the flow oscillation. Under the assumptions of steady flow velocity profile and flow separation in the diffuser, simplified analytical models are provided to see the dependency of rectification on the micropump geometry. Geometric parameters of channel length, nozzle throat, chamber size, and converging/diverging angle are depicted through the analytical models in low Reynolds number flow, and the prediction and experimental results are compared. This theoretical study can be used to determine the optimum geometry of valveless micropump.

박막이 부착된 채널내의 2차원 층류유동장에 대한 연구 (Study on Two-Dimensional Laminar Flow through a Finned Channel)

  • A two-dimensional laminar flow through a channel with a pair of symmetric vertical fins is investigated. At far up- and down-stream from the fins, the plane Poiseuille flow exists in the channel. The Stokes flow for this channel is first investigated analytically and then the other laminar flows by numerical method. For analytic method, the method of eigen function expansion and collocation method are employed. In numerical solution for laminar flows, finite difference method(FDM) is used to obtain vorticity and stream function. From the results, the streamline patterns are shown and the additional pressure drop due to the attached fins and the force exerted on the fin are calculated. It is clear that the force depends on the length of fins and Reynolds number. When the Reynolds number exceeds a critical value, the flow becomes asymmetric. This critical Reynolds number Re/sub c/ depends on the length of the fins.

  • In this study, two and three dimensional low Reynolds number flows are compared. For the two dimensional flow, an airfoil was considered and for the three dimensional low wing and full-body aircraft were considered. Because a flight condition of the aircraft is in a low Reynolds number flow, itl requires reflecting flow transition. In the two dimensional analysis, transition is predicted using en method. In the three dimensional flow, the effect of transition is included using k-w SST turbulence models.

  • Large eddy simulation(LES) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on the flow field at $Re_{\tau}$=180, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. A dynamic subgrid-scale model for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses was employed to close the governing equations. The mean flow properties, mean velocity profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The Reynolds number effects were observed in the higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor). Furthermore, the budgets of the Reynolds stresses and turbulent kinetic energy were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effect of Reynolds number on the turbulent structures.

  • In order to understand the laminar flow heat transfer enhancement by the swirl flow, the effects of heat transfer in a circular pipe with a twisted tape insert were investigated experimentally. In the present study, the uniform heat flux condition was considered. The laminar heat transfer correlations were developed using the least-square-fit from the surface temperature distribution of an electrically-heated pipe and flow property data. Average Nusselt number correlations with the twisted tape insert were expressed as a function of swirl parameter, Reynolds number and Prandtl number. In the case of the twisted ratio y = 6.05, the mean Nusselt number increased approximately 500% and the friction factor increased approximately 300%, compared to the case of the empty pipe, respectively.

Flow Field Analysis of Smoke in a Rectangular Tunnel

  • In order to simulate a smoke or poisonous gas emergency in a rectangular tunnel and to investigate a better way to exhaust the smoke, the characteristics of smoke flow have been analyzed using flow field data acquired by Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). Olive oil has been used as tracer particles with the kinematic viscosity of air, $1.51{\times}10^{-5}\;m^2/s$. The investigation has done in the range of Reynolds number of 1600 to 5333 due to the inlet velocities of 0.3 m/s to 1 m/s respectively. The average velocity vector and instantaneous kinematic energy fields with respect to the three different Reynolds numbers are comparatively discussed by the Flow Manager. In general, the smoke flow becomes more disorderly and turbulent with the increase of Reynolds number. Kinematic energy in the measured region increases with the increase of Reynolds number while decreasing at the leeward direction about the outlet region.

The Effect of Buoyancy Orientation on Flow Structures in Turbulent Channel Flow using DNS

  • The effect of buoyancy orientation on turbulent channel flow has been investigated using DNS (direct numerical simulation). Grashof number is kept at 9.6 $\times 10^{5}$ while changing the orientation of the buoyancy vector to be parallel or perpendicular to the channel walls. Four study cases can be distinguished during this research namely; streamwise, wall-normal unstable stratification, wall-normal stable stratification and spanwise oriented buoyancy. The driving mean pressure gradient used in all cases is adjusted to keep mass flow rate constant while friction Reynolds number is around 150. At this Grashof number, the skin friction shows decrement in the unstable and stable stratification and increment in the other two cases. Analyses of the changes of flow structure for the four cases are presented highlighting on the mean quantities and second order statistics.
