  • Four simulation models of plastic plate heat exchangers are designed and simulated. The flat plate type heat exchanger is designed as the reference model in order to evaluate how much thermal performance increases. The turbulence promoter type heat exchanger is fabricated with cylindrical-type vortex generators and rib-type turbulence promoters. The corrugate type is obtained from the conventional stainless steel compact heat exchangers, which are called the herringbone-type compact heat exchangers. The dimple type heat exchanger has a number of dimples on its surface. In this study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the plastic plate heat exchanger are investigated using numerical simulation and compared with experimental results. The flows are assumed as a three-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent model. The standard k-$\varepsilon$ model is used as the turbulent flow modeling, the SIMPLE algorithm is used to treat the coupling between pressure and velocity, and first order upwind scheme is used for discretization of momentum, turbulent and energy. The computational analysis and experimental results both show that the friction coefficient and Nu number is highest in the corrugate type.

  • Oil-film surface flow visualizations and three-dimensional flow measurements using a straight five-hole probe have been conducted for a circular impinging jet which is normally oriented to the crossflow in a channel. Throughout the experiments, the ratio of channel height to injection hole diameter, H/D, is fixed to be 1.0, and blowing ratio is varied to be 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0. From the surface flow visualizations for both top wall(target plate) and bottom wall, impinging jet region on the target plate can be clearly identified, and for the small value of H/D = 1.0, presence of the bottom wall changes the near-hole flow structure, significantly. The three-dimensional flow measurements show that in the dawnstream region of the injection hole, there exist a pair of counter-rotating vortices, called "scarf vortices", and the strength of the vortices strongly depends on the blowing ratio. In addition, a new flow model in the flow symmetry plane has been proposed for H/D = 1.0.

  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a sirocco fan under the maximum flowrate condition. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used for this unsteady and three-dimensional numerical analysis. In consequence, because a flow is unstable within the range of about 50% of a housing depth from a bellmouth around the cutoff region, the passing flow through the blade cascade occurred on the X-Y plane is a slow or a reverse with approaching to the housing inlet. Also, the secondary flow shows on the radial plane of a housing, and its vortex center exists within about 33% of a housing depth from a bellmouth except the cutoff region. Moreover, the flow occurring on the exit plane of a sirocco fan shows a complex secondary flow.

  • When high speed train meets sidewind, folwfields around the train is very complex. In this case, the force by sidewind has a bad effect on stability of train. We can observe that the flow separates, reattaches, and forms all unsteady vortex in the wake region behind tile structure. Such folwfield can be analyzed by $\kappa$-$\omega$ SST model, and we investigate the effect for various section shape of high speed train. So we acquire the result that as tile corner of train section is rounder, stability of train is better.

  • In this study pressure and shaft torque pulsation were measured with variation of head and flow during the model test for a 15 MW Francis Turbine. Pressure pulsations were measured at the inlet of the spiral casing and 4 points in the cone of the diffuser and shaft torque pulsation at the upper position of the turbine. The maximum amplitude of pressure pulsation appeared 2.03% of the maximum rated head with the frequency of 25% of the rated revolution and at the guide vane opening of $10^{\circ}$. Shaft torque pulsation appeared 0.01% of the rated shaft torque, fairly low value. Air was admitted through the cone and pressure pulsation gradually decreased with increase of air flow and kept nearly constant after 5% of the rated flow. A new Francis turbine of which specific speed is 115 m-kW had been designed to rehabilitate the old one and the model test was performed at EPFL. The commercial code, STAR-$CCM^+$ was used for numerical simulation of flow.

  • Wind flow and pressure on the roof of the Texas Tech Experimental Building are studied along with the incident wind in an effort to understand the wind-structure interaction and the mechanisms of roof pressure generation. Two distinct flow phenomena, cornering vortices and separation bubble, are investigated. It is found for the cornering vortices that the incident wind angle that favors formation of strong vortices is bounded in a range of approximately 50 degrees symmetrical about the roof-corner bisector. Peak pressures on the roof corner are produced by wind gusts approaching at wind angles conducive to strong vortex formation. A simple analytical model is established to predict fluctuating pressure coefficients on the leading roof corner from the knowledge of the mean pressure coefficients and the incident wind. For the separation bubble situation, the mean structure of the separation bubble is established. The role of incident wind turbulence in pressure-generation mechanisms for the two flow phenomena is better understood.

  • Model tests and CFD were carried out to find out the cause of cavitation surge in hydraulic power plants. In experiments the cavitation surge was observed at flow rate, both with and without a surge tank placed just upstream of the inlet volute. The surge frequency at smaller flow rate was much smaller than the swirl mode frequency caused by the whirl of vortex rope. An unsteady CFD was carried out with two boundary conditions: (1) the flow rate is fixed to be constant at the volute inlet, (2) the total pressure is kept constant at the volute inlet, corresponding to the experiments without/with the surge tank. The surge was observed with both boundary conditions at both higher and lower flow rates. Discussions as to the cause of the surge are made based on additional tests with an orifice at the diffuser exit, and with the diffuser replaced with a straight pipe.

  • Numerical simulation based on the Reynolds Averaged Naviere-Stokes (RANS) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method had been carried out with the commercial code ANSYS CFX. The structured grid and SST $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model had been adopted. The impact of non-condensable gas (NCG) on cavitation performance had been introduced into the Schnerr and Sauer cavitation model. The numerical investigation of cavitating flow of marine propeller E779A was carried out with different advance ratios and cavitation numbers to verify the numerical simulation method. Tip clearance effects on the performance of pumpjet propulsor had been investigated. Results showed that the structure and characteristics of the tip leakage vortex and the efficiency of the propulsor dropped more sharply with the increase of the tip clearance size. Furthermore, the numerical simulation of tip clearance cavitation of pumpjet propulsor had been presented with different rotational speed and tip clearance size. The mechanism of tip clearance cavitation causing a further loss of the efficiency had been studied. The influence of rotational speed and tip clearance size on tip clearance cavitation had been investigated.

  • The flow field around a three dimensional minivan-like body has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system using second-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives, and third/second-order scheme for the spatial derivatives. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. A H-H type of multi-block grid system is generated around a three dimensional minivan-like body. Turbulent flows have been modeled by the Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model. To validate present procedure, the flows around the Ahmed body with 12.5° of slant angle are simulated. A good agreement with other numerical results is achived. After code validation, the flows around a mimivan-like body are simulated. The simulation shows three dimensional vortex-pair just behind body. The flow separation is also observed on the rear of the body. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agreed with physical flow phenomena.

  • Local scour is associate with particular local types of vortex around bridge piers. This paper is method of protection local scour for the existing Busan City subway 3 Line bridge piers and Gupo large bridge piers. In order to take design of protection of local scour this bridge piers, We calculate the local scour hole of depth , scour width, riprap construction , filter construction by formulas. We had experimental hydraulic model test for this bridge piers in order to take proof for the calculation of local scour. We knew that the vortex intensifies the local flow velocities and acts to erode sediment from the scour hole and transport it downstream. As the result of hydraulic model test, we could suggest three types method of protection local scour this bridges. We knew that FHWA HEC-18(Richardson et al. 2001: Modified CSU) Formula is useful to checking calculation as application of field. One is pier protection using the sheet piles and riprap, the others are pier protection using the riprap with filter and to make renew Wall-caisson. The best method of protection for the existing Busan City subway 3 Line bridge piers and Gupo large bridge piers is pier protection using the sheet piles and riprap.
