  • There are two kinds of models in two-phase pressured drop; homogeneous flow model and separated flow model. Many previous researchers have developed correlations for two-phase pressure drop in a microchannel. Most correlations were modified Lockhart and Martinelli's correlation, which was based on the separated flow model. In this study, experiments for adiabatic liquid water and nitrogen gas flow in rectangular microchannels were conducted to investigate two-phase pressure drop in the rectangular microchannels. Two-phase frictional pressure drop in the rectangular microchannels is highly related with flow regime. Homogeneous model with six two-phase viscosity models: $Owen^{(21)}$'s, $MacAdams^{(22)}$'s, Cicchitti et ${al.}^{(23)}$'s, Dukler et ${al.}^{(24)}$'s, Beattie and ${Whalley}^{(25)}$'s, Lin et ${al.}^{(26)}$'s models and six separated flow models: Lockhart and $Martinelli^{(27)}$'s, ${Chisholm}^{(31)}$'s, Zhang et ${al.,}^{(15)}$'s, Lee and ${Lee}^{(5)}$'s, Moriyama and ${Inue}^{(4)}$'s, Qu and $Mudawar^{(8)}$'s models were assessed with our experimental data. The best two-phase viscosity model is Beattie and Whalley's model. The best separated flow model is Qu and Mudawar's correlation. Flow regime dependency in both homogeneous and separated flow models was observed. Therefore, new flow pattern based correlations for both homogeneous and separated flow models were individually proposed.

  • This study presents some results of a preliminary study for the coupled precipitation and river flow prediction system. The model system in based on three numerical models, Mesoscale Atmospheric Simulation model for generating atmospheric variables. Soil-Plant-Snow model for computing interactions within soil-canopy-snow system as well as the energy and water exchange between the atmosphere and underlying surfaces, and TOPMODEL for simulating stream flow, subsurface flow, and water tabled depth in an watershed. The selected study area is the 2,703 $\alpha_4$ $\km_2$ Soyang River basin with outlet at Soyang dam site. In addition to providing the results of rainfall and stream flow predictions, some results of DEM and GIS application are presented. It is obvious that the accurate river flow predictions are highly dependant on the accurate predictation predictions.

  • A numerical study of three-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer in the metering section of a single screw extruder has been performed. The mathematical model for the screw channel is simplified by unwound channel and fixing the coordinate system to the screw. The pressure boundary and the prescribed mass flow rate conditions are imposed on the inlet and outlet, respectively. The commercial code STAR-CD based on the finite volume method is used to obtain the results of the present work. The computation of the reverse flow, which cannot be computed by the marching-type 3-D model, is performed in the present study.

  • Interfacial pressure jump terms based on the physics of phasic interface and bubble dynamics are introduced into the momentum equations of the two-fluid model for bubbly flow. The pressure discontinuity across the phasic interface due to the surface tension force is expressed as the function of fluid bulk moduli and bubble radius. The consequence is that we obtain from the system of equations the real eigenvalues representing the void-fraction propagation speed and the pressure wave speed in terms of the bubble diameter. Inversely, we obtain an analytic closure relation for the radius of bubbles in the bubbly flow by using the kinematic wave speed given empirically in the literature. It is remarkable to see that the present mechanistic model using this practical bubble radius can indeed represent both the mathematical well-posedness and the physical wave speeds in the bubbly flow.

  • The spray characteristics of liquid jet in cross flow with variation of injection angle are numerically studied. Numerical analysis was carried out using KIVA code, which was modified to be suitable for simulating liquid jet ejected into cross flow. Wave model and Kelvin-Helmholtz(KH)/Rayleigh-Taylor(RT) hybrid model were used for the purpose of analyzing liquid column, ligament, and the breakup of droplet. Numerical results were compared with experimental data in order to verify the reliability of the physical model. Liquid jet penetration length, volume flux, droplet velocity profile and SMD were obtained. Penetration length increases as flow velocity decreases and injection velocity increases. From the bottom wall, the SMD increases as vertical distance increases. Also the SMD decreases as injection angle increases.

  • The characteristic of unsteady flowfields on gas turbine, particularly on a rotor blade surface has been numerically investigated. The unsteady flow in a rotor blade passage as a result of wake/blade interaction is modeled by the inviscid flow approach, and solved by Euler equations using a time accurate marching scheme. Unsteady flow in the blade passage is induced by periodically moving a wake model across the passage inlet. The wake model used in this study is the Gaussian wate model in which the wake flow is assumed to be parallel with uniform static pressure and uniform relative total enthalpy. Numerical results show that for the case of Ps/Pr=1.5, the velocity and pressure distribution on the blade surfaces have much more complex profiles than for the case of Ps/Pr=1.0.

  • A grid-based hydrological model, CELTHYM, capable of estimating base flow and surface runoff using only readily available data, was used to assess hydrologic impacts caused by land use change on Little Eagle Creek (LEC) in Central Indiana. Using time periods when land use data are available, the model was calibrated with two years of observed stream flow data, 1983-1984, and verified by comparison of model predictions with observed stream flow data for 1972-1974 and 1990-1992. Stream flow data were separated into direct runoff and base flow using HYSEP (USGS) to estimate the impacts of urbanization on each hydrologic component. Analysis of the ratio between direct runoff and total runoff from simulation results, and the change in these ratios with land use change, shows that the ratio of direct runoff increases proportionally with increasing urban area. The ratio of direct runoff also varies with annual rainfall, with dry year ratios larger than those for wet years shows that urbanization might be more harmful during dry years than abundant rainfall years in terms of water yield and water quality management.

  • A numerical investigation on the turbulent flows over a three-dimensional steep hill is presented. The numerical model developed for the present work is based on the finite volume method and the SIMPLE algorithm with a non-staggered grid system. Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and Shih's non-linear model are tested for the validation of the prediction accuracy in the 3D separated flow. Comparisons of the mean velocity and turbulence profiles between the numerical predictions and the measurements show good agreement. The Shih's non-linear model is found to predict mean flow and turbulence better than the Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$. Flow patterns have also been examined to explain the difference in the cavity zone between 2D and 3D hills.
