  • In operating a turbomachine at off-design conditions various instabilities caused by anomalous flow phenomena occur and sometimes lead to the damage of a turbomachine. In order to avoid these phenomena various devices characteristic to each phenomenon have been developed, however they make turbomachines large-sized and cause efficiency drop. The present author has developed a very simple and innovative device, termed "J-groove," of suppressing various anomalous flow phenomena commonly by controlling the angular momentum of the main flow. It has been revealed that J-groove makes an operation of a turbomachine stable in all flow range, causes little efficiency drop, and can be easily applied to an existing machine. Here is reviewed totally the results of suppressing various anomalous flow phenomena in turbomachines.

  • An experimental flow visualization study of the entrance section of channels formed with wavy plates was made. The experiments were conducted in a water channel and a laser illuminated particle tracking was used as the technique of flow visualization. The flow region that were found in the experiments are steady, unsteady and significantly-mixed flows. Instabilities of the flow first appear near the exit of the channel. As the Reynolds number increases, the flows are characterized by the appearance of flow separation and the growth of recirculation region.

  • The governing equations for high-speed lateral atomizing injector nozzle flow based on the LES-VOF model in conjunction with the CSF model are presented, and then an integrated parallel computation are performed to clarify the detailed atomization process of a high speed nozzle flow and to acquire data which is difficult to confirm by experiment such as atomization length, liquid core shapes, droplets size distributions, spray angle and droplets velocity profiles. According to the present analysis, it is found that the atomization rate and the droplets-gas two-phase flow characteristics are controlled by the turbulence perturbation upstream of the injector nozzle, hydrodynamic instabilities at the gas-liquid interface, shear stresses between liquid core and periphery of the jet. Furthermore, stable and a high-resolution computation can be attained in the high density ratio (pl/ pg = 554) conditions conditions by using our numerical method.

  • The numerical simulation of shock waves in supersonic flows is challenging because of several instabilities which can affect the solution. Among them, the carbuncle phenomenon can introduce nonphysical perturbations in captured shock waves. In the present work, a hybrid numerical flux is proposed for the evaluation of the convective fluxes that avoids carbuncle and keeps high-accuracy on shocks and boundary layers. In particular, the proposed flux is a combination between an upwind approximate Riemann problem solver and the Local Lax-Friedrichs scheme. A simple strategy to mix the two fluxes is proposed and tested in the framework of a discontinuous Galerkin discretisation. The approach is investigated on the subsonic flow in a channel, on the supersonic flow around a cylinder, on the supersonic flow on a flat plate and on the flow in a overexpanded rocket nozzle.

  • In this study, flutter characteristics of a composite wing have been studied for the variation of laminate angles in the subsonic, transonic and supersonic flow regime. The laminate angles are selected by the aspect of engineering practice such as 0, $\pm$45 and 90 degrees. To calculate the unsteady aerodynamics for flutter analysis, the Doublet Lattice Method(DLM) in subsonic flow and the Doublet Point Method(DPM) in supersonic flow are applied in the frequency domain. In transonic flow, transonic small disturbance(TSD) code is used to calculate the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in the time domain. Aeroelastic governing equation has been solved by v-g method in the frequency domain and also by Coupled Time-Integration Method(CTIM) in the time domain. from the results of present study, characteristics of free vibration responses and aeroelastic instabilities of a composite wing are presented for the set of various lamination angles in the all flow range.

  • Lean burn combustion is an important concept for improving the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. However, the lean burning is associated with increased cycle-to-cycle combustion variations due to the ignition instabilities and redu- ced flame propagation rates. Engine stability under lean mixture conditions could be improved by increasing flame speed through enhanced flow characteristics and by securing ignitability with improvement of ignition systems. The effects of flow motion and ignition characteristics on the combustion performances were investigated in a 4-valve SI engine. Flow motions of tumble-swirl were varied with a swirl control valve attached at the inlet ports, while ignition energy and its distribution were controlled in a high -frequency ignition system by changing spark duration and spark frequency. The improvement of lean burn performance by the optimum flow motion and ignition characteristics is discussed.

  • Three-dimensional, time-dependent solutions of fluid flow past a circular cylinder with a periodic array of circular fins are obtained using an accurate and efficient spectral multidomain methodology. A Fourier expansion with a corresponding uniform grid is used along the circumferential direction. A spectral multidomain method with Chebyshev collocation is used along the r-z plane to handle the periodic array of circular fins attached to the surface of the cylinder. Unlike the flow past a circular cylinder, Second instabilities like mode A and mode B are not found in the Reynolds number range $100\~500$. It is found that three-dimensional instability of vortical structures is suppressed due to the presence of fin. The present numerical solutions report the detailed information of flow quantities near wake of finned cylinder.

  • The tone generation mechanism and aeroacoustic characteristics have been investigated for flow over open cavities using direct acoustic numerical simulations. Physically the tone generation mechanism of open cavity is more complicated when flow instabilities are excited by the correlation effects of flow parameters. From non-dimensional parameter studies in very low Mach number range, it is shown that characteristics of cavity resonance inherently involve typical acoustic pattern at each discrete tone frequency, and especially in laminar flow the fundamental tone frequency is determined within flow instability criterion of laminar shear layer as well as cavity geometry, length to depth ratio.

  • The attachment of inducer upstream of main impeller is an effective method to improve the suction performance of turbopump. However, various types of cavitation instabilities are known to occur even at the designed flow rate as well as in the partial flow rate region. The cavitation surge occurring at partial flow rates is known to be strongly associated with the inlet back flow. In the present study, in order to understand the detailed structure of internal flow of inducer, we firstly carried out the experimental and numerical studies of non-cavitating flow, focusing on the flow field near the inlet throat section and inside the blade passage of a two bladed inducer at a partial flow rate. The steady flow simulation with cavitation model was also made to investigate the difference of flow field between in the cavitating and no-cavitating conditions.

  • The plastic instable flow phenomenon happens in practical forming process, I. e. upsetting, backward extrusion, piercing, indentation. And also, it is difficult to control precisely the shape and dimensions of forming process. It is found that instabilities of the process are mainly connected with imperfections in the lubrication, billet eccentricity, inclined punch alignment. In view of the direct relationship between instable material flow and quality defects of the products and for better control of forming operation, we should necessarily find out their phenomena. In this study, we introduced the friction disturbance due to inclined punch angle. Analysis of upset forging is carried out using the rigid plastic FEM and slab method with eccentricity. Also, we considered the buckling parameters of billet with the large aspect ratio in upset forging.
