  • Recently, the HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine has been spotlighted as a next generation engine because it has a good potential for high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. This study was carried out to investigate the in-cylinder flow characteristics generated in a HSDI diesel engine with a 4-valve type cylinder head. The four kinds of cylinder head were manufactured to elucidate the effect of intake port geometry on the in-cylinder flow characteristics. The steady flow characteristics such as coefficient of flow rate $(C_{f})$, swirl ratio (Rs), and mass flow rate (m,) were measured by the steady flow test rig and the unsteady flow velocity within a cylinder was measured by PIV. In addition, the in-cylinder flow patterns were visualized by the visualization experiment and these results were compared with simulation results calculated by the commercial CFD code. The steady flow test results indicated that the mass flow rate of the cylinder head with a short distance between the two intake ports is $13\%$ more than that of the other head. However, the non-dimensional swirl ratio is decreased by approximately $15\%$. As a result of in-cylinder flow characteristics obtained by PIV and CFD calculation, we found that the swirl center was eccentric from the cylinder center and the position of swirl center was changed with crank angle. As the piston moves to near the TDC, the swirl center corresponded to the cylinder center and the velocity distribution became uniform. In addition, the results of the calculation are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Hemodialysis is essential for patients with end stage renal failure. It is important to improve the patency rate and to minimize occurrence of the stenosis. Also, the blood flow to the artificial kidney can affect the blood flow characteristics through arteriovenous graft. Thus, the delivered dose are important factors for analyzing hemodynamic characteristics during hemodialysis access. In this study, the numerical analysis was performed for the effect of the delivered dose during hemodialysis access on the blood flow through the graft. As a result, The adverse pressure gradient occurred in case of a larger delivered dose through a catheter than standard dose and the flow instability increased. Also the circulation flow appeared largely at anastomotic site of the vein when the delivered dose was exceeded about half blood flow of inlet blood flow.

  • The subsidence characteristics of artificial reef (AFR) in the unsteady flow such as tidal flow were investigated. The scour and subsidence characteristics were confirmed in the steady flow field. In a main study, the interaction of "Flow - Sediment Movement - Structure Behavior" and scou $r_sidence mechanism were discussed int he unsteady flow field. AFR subsidence characteristics was discussed with Reynolds number(Re*), Shields number(Sn*), dimensionless acceleration of flow (af/g) and dimensionless time (t/T). Most of all, the continuous AFR subsidence from the scour was occurred by periodic behavior of AFR. This behavior is result from the asymmetric ground, and is influenced by maximum velocity, duration time and direction of flow.ow.

  • Flow characteristics of a compressible gas flow through a rotating disc-type rotary valve are investigated experimentally under various conditions. It is known that the mass flow rate through poppet valves of 4-stroke cycle engines and through piston valves of 2-stoke cycle engines decrease with increase in engine speed. Rotary valve is one means by which air may be made to flow inter-mittently through a pipe. In this paper an exhaust system simulator of engine was used to experi-mentally analyze the decrease in flow rate at high rotation speeds and to determine what variables other than rotational speed give rise to the observed behaviour. These variables have been included in an empirical equation which is representative of the measured flow characteristics.

  • Flow divider valve, a kind of hydraulic control valve to divide the flow from one input line to two output line uniformly, should be able to keep the constant flow to output lines despite of the change load or supply pressure. Having 5-10% flow diving error in commercial hydraulic products is one of main source of the accumulated error caused hydraulic system problem and demands the development of flow divider valve to control flow more accurately, In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of flow divider valve are investigated by the numerical estimation of the spool motion considered the external supply force. The optimum design of flow divider valve are proposed to reduce the flow diving error. For the dynamic characteristics analysis, the change of sectional area of fixed and variable orifice, and spool are studied when the input signal is accepted to a constant load.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the flow duration characteristics of Nakdong, Seomjin and Geum river due to environmental change. The water level gauging stations of Nakdong, Seomjin and Geum river were selected to analyze the change of flow duration. The construction period of multipurpose dam was considered to analyze flow duration characteristics. As the result of this study, it show that ninety-five day flow, normal flow, low flow and drought flow were increased by multipurpose dam construction at all stations except a Jukpo gauging station. Especially, improved effect of flow duration in downstream part was bigger than that in upstream and midstream part. The coefficients of river regime of Nakdong, Seomjin and Geum river were decreased and also coefficients of flow duration were decreased after the multipurpose dam construction. However decline of coefficient of flow duration was smaller than coefficient of river regime because coefficient of flow duration is less affected by maximum discharge and minimum discharge than coefficient of river regime, It was confirmed that multipurpose dam on upstream and midstream has a useful effect for improving the flow duration characteristics.

  • To identify the flow characteristics of the SMART reactor, a flow distribution model test and a numerical simulation are performed in KAERI. Among several part of the SMART reactor, the fuel assemblies are simulated using simulators because of the complexity. The geometries of the core in the SMART reactor and simulator are different, but some similarities are maintained such as the ratio of pressure drop in the vertical and cross directions. There are cross flow holes in each core simulator to reproduce the cross flow of SMART fuel assemblies. To know the flow characteristics of the cross flow, numerical analysis is performed. As the cross flow area is decreased, the pressure drop between inlet and outlet is decreased. Also, when the flow imbalance between two core simulators is constant, the cross flow area does not significantly affect the cross flow.

  • For decades, researchers have rigorously studied the characteristics of flow traveling around blunt objects in order to gain greater understanding of the flow around aircraft, vehicles or vessels. Many different types of flow exist, such as boundary layer flow, flow separation, laminar and turbulent flow, vortex and vortex shedding; such types are especially observed around circular cylinders. Vortex shedding around a circular cylinder exhibits a two-dimensional flow structure possessing a Reynolds number within the range of 47 and 180. As the Reynolds number increases, the Karman vortex changes into a three-dimensional flow structure. In this paper, a numerical analysis was performed examining the flow and aero-acoustic field characteristics around a circular cylinder using an optimized high-order compact scheme, which is a high order scheme. The analysis was conducted with a Reynolds number ranging between 300 and 1,000, which belongs to B-mode flow around a circular cylinder. For a B-mode Reynolds number, a proper spanwise length is analyzed in order to obtain the characteristics of three-dimensional flow. The numerical results of the Strouhal number as well as the lift and drag coefficients according to Reynolds numbers are coincident with the other experimental results. Basic research has been conducted studying the effects an unstable three-dimensional wake flow on an aero-acoustic field.

  • In this study, visualization of in-cylinder spray behavior and spark channel stretching by air flow characteristics depending on engine operating conditions were investigated. For in-cylinder spray behavior, increase in engine rpm did not alter the counter-clockwise air flow direction and location of in-cylinder dominant air flow but increased average air flow velocity, which hindered spray propagation parallel to the piston surface. When injection timing was retarded, direction of in-cylinder dominant air flow was changed, and average air flow velocity was reduced resulting in an increase in spray penetration length and change in direction. For spark channel stretching, increase in air flow speed did not affect spark channel stretch direction but affected length due to increase in spark channel resistance and limitation of energy ignition coil can handle. Change in air flow direction affected spark channel stretch direction where the air flow was obstructed by ground electrode which caused spark channel direction to occur in the opposing direction of air flow. It also affected spark channel stretch length due to change in air flow speed around the spark plug electrode from the interaction between the air flow and ground electrode.
