Recently, a great deal of research and development of a fuel cell have been carried out to solve problems on the drain of fossil fuel, air pollution and global warning. In order to improve the efficiency of a fuel cell, it is necessary to clarify the flow in separator. In this study, distributions of velocity flow rate and pressure, and streamlines are examined in detail from numerical analysis with CFD code. In the experiment the distribution of flow rate is measured and flow in the each grooves of the separator is visualized by dye method changing Reynolds number. Furthermore, effects of size of the inlet and outlet manifolds and shape of ribs near the inlet outlet on the distributions of flow and pressure are examined.

Major design targets such as test cell type, cell flow, cell bypass ratio, approach velocity, cell depression, front cell distortion, noise level and vibration level to construct a new 150,000 lbf thrust aircraft engine test facility were established. Based on the final aerodynamic and acoustic performance tests conducted at the newly constructed test facility, it was found that the new test facility is judged to be excellent and meets design targets.
A thin layer flow cell with cell volume of $8\;{\mu}{\ell}$ was constructed. Diffusion currents of ascorbic acid was directly proportional to the 1/3 power of volume flow rates. A linear dynamic range was obtained at the concentration range between $10^{-7}\;M\;and\;10^{-4}\;M$ of ascorbic acid with a detection limit of $10^{-8}\;M$. Ascorbic acid in the multivitamin product was amperometrically determined at TLFC after simply dissolving mg range ground product in $100m{\ell}$ of pH 7.0 phosphate buffer.
To improve the safety, the fuel cell operate inside a pressurized enclosure which contains inert gas so called protective gas. The protective gas not only prevents the mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, but also removes the water in the vessel with the condenser. This study presents the details of the flow optimization in order to reduce the humidity in the fuel cell housing. The protective gas flow in the fuel cell container is studied by Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations. This study focuses on optimizing the geometry of an protective gas circulation system in fuel cell module to reduce the humidity in the vessel. CFD analysis was carried out for an existing model to understand the flow behavior through the fuel cell system. Based on existing model CFD results, geometrical changes like inlet placement, optimization of outlet size, modification of fuel cell module system are carried out, to improve the flow characteristics. The CFD analysis of the optimized model is again carried out and the results show good improvement in protective gas flow behavior.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the performance of commercial fuel cell (rated capacity 1000W) with the help of resistive load and output power variation with change in H2 flow rate and calculate the maximum power point (MPP) of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) while changing AC and DC load respectively. The factors influencing the output power of a fuel cell are hydrogen flow rate, cell temperature, and membrane water content. The results show that when the H2 flow rate is changed from 11, 13, and 15 Lpm, MPP is increased from lower to higher flow rate. The power of the fuel cell is increased at the rate of 29% by increasing the flow rate from 11 to 15 lpm. This study will allow small-scale industries and residential buildings (in remote or inaccessible areas) to characterize the performance of PEMFC. Furthermore, fuel cell helps in reducing emission in the environment compared to fossil fuels. Also, fuel cells are ecofriendly as well as cost effective and can be the best alternative way to convert energy.
Experiments have been performed to investigate effects of pulsating cathode flow on a 10-cell proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. For all the experiments, the flow rate, temperature and relative humidity of hydrogen at the anode inlet are fixed. The effects of the pulsating frequency, amplitude and flow rate at the cathode inlet on performance of 10-cell PEMFC are examined. The polarization and power curves show that the power output and limiting current is substantially increased when the pulsating component is added to cathode flow channel. The maximum power output increases by up to 38% and enhancement of the overall performance is more pronounced at lower flow rate region.
Variations of temperature and velocity fields in a Hele-Shaw Convection Cell (HSC) were measured using a holographic interferometry and PIV technique with varying Rayleigh number. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow at high Rayleigh numbers. Two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry, double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed to measure the temperature field variations of HSC convective flow. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves can be eliminated and reconstruction images are clear, but transient flow structure cannot be observed clearly. On the other hand, transient flow can be observed and reconstructed well using the real-time method. PIV results show that flow inside the HSC is periodic and the oscillating state is well matched with the temperature field results. The holographic interferometry and PIV techniques employed in this study are useful for analyzing the unsteady convective thermal fluid flows.

In this paper, numerical analysis of hydrogen recycle system has been conducted in order to enhance the efficiency of automotive fuel cell. Generally, the excess hydrogen is provided in the automotive fuel cell. Since the non-reaction hydrogen reduces automotive fuel cell efficiency, reuse of the non-reaction hydrogen can be helpful to improve the fuel cell performance. In case of PEM FC, the water vapor is provided to hydrogen from the cathode so that the mixture experiences phase change depending on the changes of pressure and temperature. The internal flow of the mixture in the hydrogen recirculation system of fuel cell was investigated for real flow conditions. The variation of performance, properties and mass fractions of mixture, hydrogen and water-vapor were investigated. This study was performed based on 80KW level automotive fuel cell's recycling system.
General polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC) operates at less than $80^{\circ}C$. Therefore liquid phase water resulting from electrochemical reaction accumulates and floods the cell which in turn increases the mass transfer loss. To prevent the flooding, it is common to employ serpentine flow channel, which can efficiently export liquid phase water to the outlet. The major drawback of utilizing serpentine flow channel is the large pressure drop that happens between the inlet and outlet. On the other hand, in the high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell (HT-PEMFC), since the operating temperature is 130 to $180^{\circ}C$, the generated water is in the state of gas, so the flooding phenomenon is not taken into consideration. In HT-PEMFCs parallel flow channel with lower pressure drop between the inlet and outlet is employed therefore, in order to circulate hydrogen and air in the cell less pumping power is required. In this study we analyzed HT-PEMFC's different flow channels by parallel computation using previously developed 3-D isothermal model. All the flow channels had an active area of $25cm^2$. Also, we numerically compared the performance of HT-PEMFC parallel flow channel with different manifold area and Rib interval against the original serpentine flow channel. Results of the analysis are shown in the form of three-dimensional contour polarization curves, flow characteristics in the channel, current density distribution in the Membrane, overpotential distribution in the catalyst layer, and hydrogen and oxygen concentration distribution. As a result, the performance of a real area fuel cell was predicted.
Proper water management is crucial for the efficient operation of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Especially, for automotive applications, A novel water management that can avoid both membrane dry-out and flooding is a very important task to achieve good performance and efficiency of PEM fuel cells. The aim of this study is to investigate the liquid water behavior on the gas diffusion layer (GDL) surface and in the cathode flow channel of a PEM unit fuel cell under flooding conditions. For this purpose, a transparent unit fuel cell is devised and fabricated by modifying the conventional PEM fuel cell design. The results of water droplet behavior under flooding conditions are mainly presented. The water distributions in the cathode flow channels with cell operating voltage are also compared and analyzed. Through this work, it is expected that the data obtained from this fundamental study can be effectively used to establish the basic water management strategy in terms of water removal from the flow channels in a PEM fuel cell stack.
