The present paper studies the leakage flow model used in the performance prediction of a scroll compressor. Two leakage flow models, isentropic and Fanno flow model, are studied in detail. Their predictions are also compared with CFD solutions to check the validity as a leakage flow model. Comparison with CFD solutions shows that the isentropic flow model predicts excessive leakage flow rate, while the Fanno flow model shows acceptable agreement with CFD solutions. The excessive leakage flow rate by isentropic flow model results in under-prediction of the overall performance of a scroll compressor.

This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flow through single opening and partitioned opening. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with a small opening on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. Flow measurements are made with the opening, for partition ratios H_p/H$_1$$ in the range 0 to 1. where H_p$ and H$_1$ are partition length and height of the opening. respectively. In the case of H_p/H$_1$$ of 0, flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air within the opening are unseparated (bidirectional), and the two flows interfere within the opening. The unseparated flow increases strength of flow resistance and therefore, the exchange flow rate is minimum through range of the partition ratios. Two flow zones, i.e., separated (unidirectional) flow zone and unseparated (bidirectional) flow zone, exist with increasing the partition length. The exchange flow rate increases with increasing the separated flow zone. It is found that a maximum exchange flow rate exists at H_p/H$_1$$ of 1. As a result of comparison of the exchange flow rates by changing the partition ratio, the fluids Interference in the unseparated zone is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow rate.

In order to investigate the characteristics of electromagnetic flowmeter in two -phase flow, an AC electromagnetic flowmeter was designed and manufactured. In various flow conditions, the signals and noises from the flowmeter were obtained and analyzed by comparison with the observed flow patterns with a high speed CCD camera. The experiment with the void simulators in which rod shaped non-conducting material was used was carried out to investigate the effect of the bubble position and the void fraction on the flowmeter. Based on the results from the void simulator, two -phase flow experiments encompassed from bubbly to slug flow regime were conducted. The simple relation $\Delta$$U_{TP}$ = $\Delta$$U_{SP}$ (l-$\alpha$) was verified with measurements of the potential difference and the void fraction. Due to the lack of homogeneity in a rent two -phase flow, the discrepancy between the relation and the present measurement was slightly increased with void fraction and also liquid volumetric flux jf. Whereas there is no difference in the shape of the raw signal between single-phase flow and bubbly flow, the signal amplitude for bubbly flow is higher than that for single -phase flow at the same water flow rate, since the passage area of the water flow is reduced. In the case of slug flow, the phase and the amplitude of the flowmeter output show dramatically the flow characteristics around each slug bubble and the position of a slug bubble itself. Therefore, the electromagnetic flowmeter shows a good possibility of being useful for identifying the flow regimes.ul for identifying the flow regimes.

To secure instream flow at the Yudeung urban stream reach of Daejeon city in South Korea, Yudeung upstream diversion was designed with total water storage of $59{\times}10^4m^3$, and the upstream Seongol reservoir was planned to raise the bank with various sizes. Downstream streamflows were simulated by considering outflows from upstream diversion and reservoir, and after then flow durations were analyzed and compared with flows of no reservoir condition. In case of no diversion or reservoir upstream, flow durations were $1^{st}$ flow of $84.72m^3/s$, $95^{th}$ flow of $2.10m^3/s$, $185^{th}$ flow of $0.92m^3/s$, $275^{th}$ flow of $0.42m^3/s$, and $355^{th}$ flow of $0.31m^3/s$. In case of upstream diversion, flow durations were $1^{st}$ flow of $94.38m^3/s$, $95^{th}$ flow of $2.96m^3/s$, $185^{th}$ flow of $1.22m^3/s$, $275^{th}$ flow of $0.50m^3/s$, and $355^{th}$ flow of $0.35m^3/s$. The increase flow rates were $0.04m^3/s$ in $355^{th}$ flow, $0.08m^3/s$ in $275^{th}$, and $0.30m^3/s$ in 185th. In case of Seongol reservoir with effective storage capacities of $365{\times}10^4m^3$, $544{\times}10^4m^3$, $750{\times}10^4m^3$, and $992{\times}10^4m^3$, flow durations were $85.5{\sim}83.9m^3/s$ on $1^{st}$ flow, $2.85{\sim}2.57m^3/s$ on $95^{th}$ flow, $1.16{\sim}1.27m^3/s$ on $185^{th}$ flow, $0.64{\sim}0.99m^3/s$ on $275^{th}$ flow, and $0.56{\sim}0.94m^3/s$ on $355^{th}$ flow. The increase flow rates were $0.25{\sim}0.63m^3/s$ in $355^{th}$ flow, $0.22{\sim}0.57m^3/s$ in $275^{th}$, and $0.24{\sim}0.35m^3/s$ in $185^{th}$. The more the sizes of upstream reservoirs increased, the $1^{st}$ and $95^{th}$ flows decreased in which coefficients of determination were 0.92, 0.99, respectively and the $185^{th}$, $275^{th}$, and $355^{th}$ flows increased in which coefficients of determination were 0.93 to 0.99.

Both flow visualizations and computational fluid dynamics were performed to determine hemodynamics in a total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) model for surgically correcting congenital heart defects. From magnetic resonance images, an anatomically correct glass model was fabricated to visualize steady flow. The total flow rates were 4, 6 and 8L/min and flow rates from SVC and IVC were 40:60. The flow split ratio between LPA and RPA was varied by 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50. A pressure-based finite-volume software was used to solve steady flow dynamics in TCPC models. Results showed that superior vena cava(SVC) and inferior vena cava(IVC) flow merged directly to the intra-atrial conduit, creating two large vortices. Significant swirl motions were observed in the intra-atrial conduit and pulmonary arteries. Flow collision or swirling flow resulted in energy loss in TCPC models. In addition, a large intra-atrial channel or a sharp bend in TCPC geometries could influence on energy losses. Energy conservation was efficient when flow rates in pulmonary branches were balanced. In order to increase energy efficiency in Fontan operations, it is necessary to remove a flow collision in the intra-atrial channel and a sharp bend in the pulmonary bifurcation.

Analysis of flow phenomena in a centrifugal compressor impeller has been carried out with numerical simulation to understand the physics of flow near stall. Near stall point, tip leakage flow spills ahead of the leading edge of adjacent blade and other leakage flow passes over the clearance of the adjacent blade instead of rolling up into vortex within the passage. The tip leakage flow at the mid chord of impeller blade impinges against the pressure surface of the adjacent blade and then rolls up into vortex within the passage, which blocks the flow passage and generates viscous loss. The spillage of leakage flow ahead of the adjacent blade generates the recirculation of flow entering the impeller, which causes the power transferred into the flow by the impeller to decrease and blocks the flow passage. Near diffuser hub wall, flow recirculation occurs. As operating point goes to stall point, the core of recirculation approaches the impeller exit The length rises to peak point and then drops with mass flow reduction, while the height steadily rises.

To describe the air flow characteristics within an air cleaner cover and mass air flow sensor (MAFS) entry region installed in a 3.0L engine air induction system, flow visualization, velocity and turbulence intensity measurements were taken in several view planes. A detailed knowledge of the interaction between the design parameters and the flow structures will enhance our understanding of the motions within the flow field and enable engineers to optimize the induction system and reduce the signal-to-noise ratio in the MAFS output. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of coherent motions and the controlling parameters which affect the air flow in the MAFS entrance region over a flow rate of 13-240 kg/hr. The high speed motion pictures illustrated that the air flow generated within the air cleaner cover under steady state condition is quite complex. In both axial and radial planes of the main passage it was found that the flow pattern is remarkably influenced by the air cleaner cover and main passage configuration. A comparison of the flow patterns and measurements in the original and modified air cleaner cover is presented. Measurements from the MAFS indicated an significant reduction in pressure drop and signal noise for the modified cover as compared with the original cover, over an air flow rate of 13-240 kg/hr.
Here we demonstrate complex transient behavior of viscoelastic liquid described numerically with the Leonov model in straight and contraction channel flow domains. Finite element and implicit Euler time integration methods are employed for spatial discretization and time marching. In order to stabilize the computational procedure, the tensor-logarithmic formulation of the constitutive equation with SUPG and DEVSS algorithms is implemented. For completeness of numerical formulation, the so called traction boundaries are assigned for flow inlet and outlet boundaries. At the inlet, finite traction force in the flow direction with stress free condition is allocated whereas the traction free boundary is assigned at the outlet. The numerical result has illustrated severe forward-backward fluctuations of overall flow rate in inertial straight channel flow ultimately followed by steady state of forward flow. When the flow reversal occurs, the flow patterns exhibit quite complicated time variation of streamlines. In the inertialess flow, it takes much more time to reach the steady state in the contraction flow than in the straight pipe flow. Even in the inertialess case during startup contraction flow, quite distinctly altering flow patterns with the lapse of time have been observed such as appearing and vanishing of lip vortices, coexistence of multiple vortices at the contraction comer and their merging into one.

An experimental study is carried out to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer of outside helical tubes. The main heat exchanger consists of twelve curved columns with each 300mm diameter and the total length of 1.2m copper tube having an outer diameter of 19.05mm with 1.5mm thickness. Water flows down the outside of helical tube, where flow patterns are the vertical film falling flow, immerged flow, and mixed-flow which is the combination of film falling flow and immerged flow. Refrigerant 11 flow the inside of the tube countercurrently. The experimental range of inside flow rate is 1.7~3.2$\ell$/min and outside flow rate is 21-33$\ell$/min. The results are presented as Nusselt number with corresponding Reynolds number for variety of outside and inside flow rates. The heat transfer rates of the mixed flow are 8 to 56% higher than those of film falling flow or immerged flow only. Interpretation of the results is given on the basis of physical reasoning and the correlation equations.
