  • In the era of climate change, the feasibility of a 'multi-functional storage facility' was evaluated in terms of various key performance indices such as flooding prevention effects, urban pollution reduction effects, and rainwater harvesting effects. As a result, the Korea Ministry of Environment introduced a new concept of 'multi-functional storage facility' for sewer flooding prevention and urban non-point pollution reduction. Prior to introducing these infrastructure (a large underground storage facility), the more details were needed to be examined carefully in all of technical aspects of construction and management. It was also well known that the validity of installation of 'multi-functional storage facility' was sometimes weakened because of a low B/C ratio.

  • Background and objective: Urban topology can be characterized as impervious, which changes the hydrologic features of an area, increasing surface water flow during local heavy rain events. The pluvial flooding is also influenced by the vertical structures of the urban area. This study suggested a modified digital elevation model (DEM) to identify changes in urban hydrological conditions and segmentalized urban micro catchment areas using a geographical information system (GIS). Methods: This study suggests using a modified DEM creation process based on Rolling Ball Method concepts along with a GIS program. This method proposes adding realized urban vertical data to normal DEM data and simulating hydrological analyses based on RBM concepts. The most important aspect is the combination of the DEM with polygon data, which includes urban vertical data in three datasets: the contour polyline, the locations of buildings and roads, and the elevation point data from the DEM. DEM without vertical data (DCA) were compared with the DEM including vertical data (VCA) to analyze catchment areas in Shin-wol district, Seoul, Korea. Results: The DCA had 136 catchments, and the area of each catchment ranged from 3,406 m2 to 423,449 m2. The VCA had 2,963 catchments, with the area of each ranging from 50 m2 to 16,209 m2. The most important finding is that in the overlapped VCA; the boundary of areas directly affected by flooding and the direction of surface water flow could be identified. Flooding data from September 21, 2010 and July 27, 2011 in the Shin-wol district were applied as ground reference data. The finding is that in the overlapped VCA; the boundary of areas directly affected by flooding and the direction of surface water flow could be identified. Conclusion: The analysis of the area vulnerable to surface water flooding (SWF) was more accurately determined using the VCA than using the DCA.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of the grain size distribution of the sediments obtained from the flooding in Ibang-myeon, Changnyeong-gun, which was caused by the collapse of a embarkment on the Nakdong River on August 9, 2020. As a results, it was found that the mean grain size decreases and the sorting becomes poorer as the distance from the embarkment collapse point increases. This is attributed to the fact that the transport energy of the river decreases when flooding occurs, ensuring that coarse-grained sediments are deposited first. Further, as the transport energy further reduces and becomes dispersed, the sorting for the fine-grained sediments becomes poor. Considering the characteristics of spatial distribution, sediments along the farm road showed the properties of floodplain deposits that transport to natural levee and back swamp due to river flooding. On the other hand, sediments along the irrigation ditch exhibited the properties of the deposits that are carried by the flow backward of ditch from the river after the collapse of the embarkment. The results of this study are significant because characteristics of flood sediments were elucidated for major rivers where flooding rarely occurs due to the recently built artificial structures. In addition, by applying the grain size distribution characteristics of present river flood sediments, it will be able to contribute to clarifying the sedimentary environments of the paleo river flood deposits.

  • Globally, abnormal climate phenomena have led to an increase in rainfall intensity, consequently causing a rise in flooding-related damages. Agricultural areas, in particular, experience significant annual losses every year due to a lack of research on flooding in these regions. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the flood event that occurred on July 16, 2017, in the agricultural area situated in Sindaedong, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju-si. To achieve this, the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was employed to generate runoff data by rainfall information. The produced runoff data facilitated the identification of flood occurrence points, and the analysis results exhibited a strong correlation with inundation trace maps provided by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS). The detailed output of the SWMM model enabled the extraction of time-specific runoff information at each inundation point, allowing for a detailed understanding of the inundation status in the agricultural area over different time frames. This research underscores the significance of utilizing the SWMM model to simulate inundation in agricultural areas, thereby validating the efficacy of flood alerts and risk management plans. In particular, the integration of rainfall data and the SWMM model in flood prediction methodologies is expected to enhance the formulation of preventative measures and response strategies against flood damages in agricultural areas.

  • On the IoT-based sensor networks, users or sensor nodes must perform a Service Discovery (SD) procedure before access to the wanted service. Current approach uses a center-concentrated Resource Directory (RD) servers or P2P technique, but these can cause a point-of-failure or flooding of SD messages. In this paper, we proposes an improved SWoT SD approach for CoAP-based sensor networks, which integrates Social Web of Things (SWoT) concept to current CoAP-based SD approach that makes up for weak points of existing systems. This new approach can perform a function like a keyword or location-based search originated from SNS, which can enhances the usability. Finally, we implemented a real system to evaluate.

  • When an agricultural soil dam collapses, the extent of inundation and the rate of diffusion vary depending on where the collapse occurs in the dam body. In this study, a dam collapse scenario was established and a two-dimensional numerical model FLO-2D was used to closely examine the inundation pattern of the downstream residential area according to the dam collapse point. The results were presented as a flood risk map showing the changes and patterns of the extent of inundation spread. The flood level and the time to reach the maximum water level vary depending on the point of collapse, and the inundation of the downstream area proceeds rapidly in the order of the midpoint, left point, and right point collapse. In the left collapse point, the submergence appeared about 0.5 hour slower than the middle point, and the right collapse point appeared about 1 hour slower than the middle point. Since the relative damage pattern is different depending on the dam collapse point, insurance and disaster countermeasures will have to be established differently.

  • This study was carried out to interpret hydraulic behavior and CO2 gas desorption in counter-current packing tower which packed 50mm plastic Hiflow-ring. The results are as follow : To compare with conventional packing, 50mm Hiflow-ring could save energy because of low pressure drop under high load. As relative error between calculated value and investigated value was less than 6% in the loading point and flooding point we found that we are predict results mathematically which occur in packing tower. The unique magnitude of packing which was used are as follows. $C_L=2.1{\times}10^{-4}$, n=0.787 so we can predict efficiency which occur

  • This study was initiated from question raised on existing study achievement that purpose for Wolji construction simply was to build gardens. In this research, after raising a question on existing theory about the Wolji construction, another purpose of Wolji construction is investigated. Study result is as follows. First, two questions raised on Wolji construction are "Was Wolji constructed as a garden from the beginning?" and "Was Wolji region available land as now at time of creation?" However, it was verified that the purpose of Wolji construction was to use not as a garden but as a detention pond, and the land of such region was unserviceable at time of Wolji construction. Second, in terms of locations and Topography, it was confirmed that Wolji has a favorable condition for undercurrent function as it is positioned at the end point of flow path formed by gushout water spurting from the water flooded from Bukcheon, or low and wetland. Third, from hydraulic point of view, Bukcheon always has a possibility of flooding occurrence before completing river bank build up, and such flooding damage was curved at Guhwangdongwonji, and at Wolji once again in order to prevent the damage spread into the center of Wanggyeong. Fourth, from urban planning point of view, it was confirmed that urban functions were not established in Wolji region before Wolji construction, and urban planning was completed through the opening of roads and others, after Wolji construction. Fifth, it was confirmed that inflow and outflow device of Wolji, and vertical stone platform at western side of Wolji were the facilities to provide sufficient functions as detention ponds.

  • In this paper, a traffic trend analysis based SNMP algorithm is proposed for improving the problem of existing traffic analysis using SNMP. The existing traffic analysis method has a vulnerability that is taken much time In analyzing by using a threshold and not detected a harmful traffic at the point of transition. The method that is proposed in this paper can solve the problems that the existing method had, simultaneously using traffic trend analysis of the day, traffic trend analysis happening in each protocol and MIB object analysis responding to attacks instead of using the threshold. The algorithm proposed in this paper will analyze harmful traffic more quickly and more precisely; hence it can reduce the damage made by traffic flooding attacks. When traffic happens, it can detect the abnormality through the three analysis methods previously mentioned. After that, if abnormal traffic overlaps in at least two of the three methods, we can consider it as harmful traffic. The proposed algorithm will analyze harmful traffic more quickly and more precisely; hence it can reduce the damage made by traffic flooding attacks.

  • A field server was developed by using ubiquitous sensor network technology to monitor the abrupt weather variation in local or mountain area. The data transmissions between deployed field servers in local terrain are very important technology in disaster prevention monitoring system. Weather related information such as temperature, humidity, illumination, atmospheric pressure, dew point and meteorological data are collected from the designated field at a regular interval. The received information from the multiple sensors located at the sensor field is used flooding routing protocol transmission techniques and the sensing data is transferred to gateway through multi-hop method. Telosb sensor node are programmed by nesC language in TinyOS platform to monitor the weather parameters of the local terrain.
