  • Hydrological characteristics and urbanization effects in the Gap river catchment were investigated employing the SWAT model. The hydrological characteristics analysis showed that total runoff in the whole catchment from 2001 to 2004 consists of 44% of groundwater flow, 6% of lateral flow and 50% of surface flow under year 2000 landuse conditions. The analysis of urbanization effect using different landuse maps for year 1975 and 2000 indicated that although 5% increase in urbanized areas did not significantly impact on the total runoff in the whole catchment, a sub-basin where urbanized area increased by 32% over the past 30 years showed $68{\sim}73%$ decrease in groundwater flow and $22{\sim}66%$ increase in surface flow. It was found that urbanization decreased overall soil moisture and percolation rate except for some increase in soil moisture during dry season. Urbanization effect was found more sensitive during a dry year which has less rainfall and higher evapotranspiration than during a wet year. Therefore, from the results of this study we could infer increased flood damage during wet season and dried stream during dry season due to urbanization. To conclude, the results of this study can provide fundamental information to the eco-friendly restoration project for the three major rivers (Gap-cheon, Yudeung-cheon and Daejeon-cheon) in Daejeon Metropolitan City.

  • Large-scale earthquakes are occurring globally, especially in the South Asian crust, which is experiencing a state of tension in the aftermath of the 2011 East Japan Earthquake. Uncertainty and fear regarding the possibility of further seismic activity in the near future have been on the rise in the region. The National Disaster Management Research Institute has previously studied and analyzed the overflow characteristics of a tsunami and the rate of flood forecasting through tsunami numerical simulations of the East Sea of South Korea. However, there is currently a significant lack of research on the Southern Coast tsunamis compared to the East Coast. On the Southern Coast, the tidal difference is between 1~4 m, and the impact of the tides is hard to ignore. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the impact of the tide propagation characteristics on the tsunami. Occurrence regions that may cradle tsunamis that affect the southern coast region are the Ryukyu Island and Nankai Trough, which are active seafloor fault zones. The Southern Coast has not experienced direct damage from tsunamis before, but since the possibility is always present, further research is required to prepare precautionary measures in the face of a potential event. Therefore, this study numerically simulated a hypothetical tsunami scenario that could impact the southern coast of South Korea. In addition, the tidal wave propagation characteristics that emerge at the shore due to tide and tsunami interactions will be analyzed. This study will be used to prepare for tsunamis that might occur on the southern coast through tsunami hazard and risk analysis.

  • Due to unpredictable climate change, the frequency of occurrence of water-related disasters and the scale of damage are also continuously increasing. In terms of disaster management, it is essential to identify the damaged area in a wide area and monitor for mid-term and long-term forecasting. In the field of water disasters, research on remote sensing technology using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite images for wide-area monitoring is being actively conducted. Time-series analysis for monitoring requires a complex preprocessing process that collects a large amount of images and considers the noisy radar characteristics, and for this, a considerable amount of time is required. With the recent development of cloud computing technology, many platforms capable of performing spatiotemporal analysis using satellite big data have been proposed. Google Earth Engine (GEE)is a representative platform that provides about 600 satellite data for free and enables semi real time space time analysis based on the analysis preparation data of satellite images. Therefore, in this study, immediate water disaster damage detection and mid to long term time series observation studies were conducted using GEE. Through the Otsu technique, which is mainly used for change detection, changes in river width and flood area due to river flooding were confirmed, centered on the torrential rains that occurred in 2020. In addition, in terms of disaster management, the change trend of the time series waterbody from 2018 to 2022 was confirmed. The short processing time through javascript based coding, and the strength of spatiotemporal analysis and result expression, are expected to enable use in the field of water disasters. In addition, it is expected that the field of application will be expanded through connection with various satellite bigdata in the future.

  • In case of the domestic condition, as the initiating from Sumjin River Dam, total 14 units of multipurpose dams had been constructed in 1965 for the roles of flood control, waterpower generation, irrigation, water supply, industrial water supply. In the case of such multipurpose dam, it produces electric energy by converting the potential energy utilizing its head and quantity of the water into kinetic energy. However, in this process, since during the time when the turbine connected to the hydraulic turbine dynamo revolves and there occurs a loud noise, it brings the physical, mental bad influences to those people also a decline of an effective working efficiency. On such point of view, after selection of various 16 measurement points, this study has measured and analyzed the travelling characteristics of noise generated at the hydraulic turbine dynamo in Daechung Dam, and also has evaluated the degree of indoor noise using the evaluation index such as PSIL, NC. As the result of noise-evaluation, in case of Daechung Dam, since the noise damage grade appears very seriously at various spaces, it is considering that its soundproof measure would be necessitated keenly. Also, it is considered that such data could be utilized as the valuable material hereafter for establishment of an efficient noise-reduction countermeasure and a comfortable working environment for the hydraulic turbine dynamo plant.

  • In August 2022, even though flood damage occurred in the metropolitan area due to heavy rain, drought warnings were issued in Jeolla province, which indicates that the regional drought is intensified recent years. To cope with regarding intensified regional droughts, many studies have been conducted to identify spatial patterns of the occurrence of meteorological drought, however, case studies of spatial clustering for water shortage are not sufficient. In this study, using the estimations of water shortage in the Han River Basin in 2030 of the Master Plans for National Water Management, the spatial characteristics of water shortage were analyzed to identify the hotspot areas based on the Local Moran's I and Getis-Ord Gi*, which are representative indicators of spatial clustering analysis. The spatial characteristics of water shortage areas were verified based on the p-value and the Moran scatter plot. The overall results of for three anayisis periods (S0(1967-1983), S1(1984-2000), S2(2001-2018)) indicated that the lower Imjin River (#1023) was the hotspot for water shortage, and there are moving patterns of water shortage from the east of lower Imjin River (#1023) to the west during S2 compared to S0 and S1. In addition, the Yangyang-namdaecheon (#1301) was the HL area that is adjacent to a high water shortage area and a low water shortage area, and had water shortage pattern in S2 compared to S0 and S1.

  • In recent, the heavy rainfall is frequently occurred and the damage tends to be increased. So, more careful hydrologic analysis is required for the designs of the hydraulic or disaster prevention structures. The time distribution of a rainfall is one of the important factors for the estimation of peak flow in hydrologic and hydraulic designs. This study is to suggest a methodology for the estimation of a rainfall time distribution which can reflect the meteorologic and topographical characteristics of Daejeon area. We collect the 34 years' rainfall data recorded in the range of 1969 to 2002 for Daejeon area and we performed the rainfall analysis with the data in between May and October of each year. According to the Huff method, the collected data corresponds to the first quartile which the rainfall is concentrated in the primary stage but the suggested method shows the different rainfall distribution with the Huff method in time. The reason is that the Huff method determines the quartile in each storm event while the suggested one determines it by estimating the dimensionless distribution of rainfall in duration after the accumulation of rainfall in time. The rainfall distributions estimated by two methodologies were applied to the Gabcheon basin in Daejeon area for the estimation of flood flow. Here we use the SCS method for the effective rainfall and unit hydrograph for the flood discharge. As the results, the peak flow for 24-hour of 100-year frequency was estimated as a $3421.20m^3/sec$ by the Huff method and $3493.38m^3/sec$ by the suggested one. We can see the difference of $72.18m^3/sec$ in between two methods and thus we may carefully determine the rainfall time distribution and compute the effective rainfall for the estimation of the peak flow.

  • In meteorology Korea has 2/3 of rain of annual total rainfall at the month of Jun through Sept and it has possibility to have serious flood damage because geographically it is composed of mountainous area with steep slope which account for 70% of its country. Also, the increase of impervious layer due to industrialization and urbanization causes direct runoff, which deteriorates contamination of rivers by moving the contaminated material on the surface at the beginning of rain. In particular, the area of leisure facilities needs the management of water quality absolutely because dense population requires space of park function and place to relax and increases moving capability of non-point pollution source. For disposition of rainfall & runoff, the standard of initial rainfall, which is to be used for the computation of disposition volume, is significant factors for the runoff study of non-point pollution source, Until now, a great deal of study has been done by many researchers. However, it is the current reality that the characteristics of runoff varies according to land protection comprising river basin and the standard of initial rainfall by each researcher is not clearly defined yet. Therefore, in this research, it is suggested that, with the introduction of SOM (Self-Organizing Map), the standard of initial rainfall be determined after analyzing each sectional data by executing pattern classification about runoff and water quality data measured at the test river basin for this research.

  • Youngju multipurpose dam is planned to minimizing the damage by flood and obtaining the water for industrial use in Nakdong river region. Faults in rock mass have strong influences on the behaviors of dam structure. Thus, it is very important to analyse for the characteristics of fault rocks in dam design. However, due to the limitation of geotechnical investigation in design stages, engineers have to carry out the additional geological survey including directional boring to find the distribution of faults and the engineering properties of faults for stability of dam. Especially, the selection of location of dam and type of dam considering fault zone must be analyzed through various experimental and numerical analysis. In this study, various geological survey and field tests were carried out to analyse the characteristics of the large fault zone through the complex dam is designed in foundation region. Also, the distribution of structural geology, the shape of faults and the mechanical properties of fault rock were studied for the reasonable design of the location and type of dam for long-term stability of the complex dam.

  • This study derives essential information elements that should be shared in the situation board by utilizing the concept of common operating picture (COP). The COP's concept and actual overseas cases were confirmed, and COP information elements that should be considered for disaster situations were redefined. The COP disaster response information elements were derived by analyzing the standard manual for disaster response and daily situation reports issued in Korea. The information elements were divided into four stages (①Report reception and recognition stages, ②Situation propagation and reporting stages, ③Emergency equipment operation stages, ④Recovery and recovery stages), centered on storm and flood damage. Further analysis of the detailed information elements was conducted to derive the information elements that must be shared in the context board. The information is shared along with spatial and geographical characteristics due to the characteristics of the COP, providing complex information to decisionmakers and officials, enabling diverse access to disaster situations. Furthermore, it is expected that disaster response will be more efficient by sharing the information in common.
