With heavy rainfall due to extreme weather causing increasing damage, the importance of urban flood forecasting continues to grow. To forecast urban flooding accurately and promptly, a sewer network and surface grid with appropriate detail are necessary. However, for urban areas with complex storm sewer networks and terrain structures, high-resolution grids and detailed networks can significantly prolong the analysis. Therefore, determining an appropriate level of network simplification and a suitable surface grid resolution is essential to secure the golden time for urban flood forecasting. In this study, InfoWorks ICM, a software program capable of 1D-2D coupled simulation, was used to examine urban flood forecasting performance for storm sewer networks with various levels of simplification and different surface grid resolutions. The inundation depth, inundation area, and simulation time were analyzed for each simplification level. Based on the analysis, the simulation time was reduced by up to 65% upon simplifying the storm sewer networks and by up to 96% depending on the surface grid resolution; further, the inundation area was overestimated as the grid resolution increased. This study provides insights into optimizing the simplification level and surface grid resolution for storm sewer networks to ensure efficient and accurate urban flood forecasting.
In this study, it was examined that a methodology for evaluating the design flood level reasonably at Imjin River estuary affected by the tide periodically. First of all, the change of the flood level was observed by performing unsteady simulation which can take into account the characteristics of the tidal rivers. And the variations of the flood level was analyzed by change of the Manning's roughness coefficient which is sensitive to the water level calculation. The results were compared with the design flood level at Imjin River estuary announced in the 2011 Imjin River Basic Plan Report. For reference, the design flood level reported in 2011 has been calculated by using a section of a huge riverbed dredging section as input data. From the simulation results, it was found that the flood level evaluated by this study was able to satisfy the freeboard of the levee without the riverbed dredging when the roughness coefficient was assigned to the same value as that of the Han river estuary in the calculation of the flood level, and the unsteady flow simulation was carried out to reflect on the tidal river.
Urban floods are usually caused by the lack of drainage capacity. Hence, sewer capacity expansion methodology by replacing small pipes with bigger ones is primarily applied as a flood control measure. However, this approach is often unreasonable because of the costs and time involved. Thus, the installation of underground rainwater storage tanks with the two advantages of flood control and water conservation is proposed. This study compared the effectiveness of flood control by both the sewer expansion methodology and rainwater storage tanks using the Storm Water Management Model. Three cases were simulated in this study. The first case analyzed flood reduction by the storm sewer expansion methodology. The simulation results indicate that the overflow volume from manholes was reduced by 49% with this methodology. The second case analyzed flood reduction by installation of rainwater storage tanks. The simulation results indicate that the overflow volume was reduced by 62%. However, these two cases could not prevent urban floods completely. Hence, the third case analyzed the joint application of the storm sewer expansion methodology and rainwater storage tanks. In this simulation, flooding did not occur. Consequently, the results of this study clearly show that underground rainwater storage tanks are more effective for flood control than capacity expansion of storm sewer. Furthermore, the joint application of these two flood control measures is more effective than their separate application.

In this study(II), The developed rainfall forecast model was applied to the NakDong River Basin for the heavy rainfall on 6th to 16th of August in 2002. The results demonstrated that the rainfall forecasts of 3 hours lead time showed good agreement with observed data. The inundation aspect of simulation depends on actual levee failure in the same basin. Rainfall forecasts were used for flood amount computation in the target watershed. Also the flood amount in the target watershed was used on boundary condition for flood inundation simulation in a protected lowland and a river. The results of simulation are consistent with actuality inundation traces and flood level data of the target watershed. This study provides practical applicability of satellite data in rainfall forecast of extreme events such as heavy rainfall or typhoon. Also this study presented an advanced integrated model of rainfall, runoff, and inundation analysis which can be applicable for flood disaster prevention and mitigation.

An arbitrary representation of an urban drainage sewer system was devised using a geographic information system (GIS) tool in order to calculate the surface and subsurface flow interaction for simulating urban flood. The proposed methodology is a mean to supplement the unavailability of systematized drainage system using high-resolution digital elevation(DEM) data in under-developed countries. A modified DEM was also developed to represent the flood propagation through buildings and road system from digital surface models (DSM) and barely visible streams in digital terrain models (DTM). The manhole, sewer pipe and storm drain parameters are obtained through field validation and followed the guidelines from the Plumbing law of the Philippines. The flow discharge from surface to the devised sewer pipes through the storm drains are calculated. The resulting flood simulation using the modified DEM was validated using the observed flood inundation during a rainfall event. The proposed methodology for constructing a hypothetical drainage system allows parameter adjustments such as size, elevation, location, slope, etc. which permits the flood depth prediction for variable factors the Plumbing law. The research can therefore be employed to simulate urban flood forecasts that can be utilized from traffic advisories to early warning procedures during extreme rainfall events.
Riverine flood is one of the critical natural threats to river-crossing bridges. As floods are the most-occurred natural hazard worldwide, survival probability of bridges due to floods must be assessed in a speedy but precise manner. In this regard, the paper presents a reliability-based approach for a rapid assessment of failure probability of vulnerable bridge components under floods. This robust method is generic in nature and can be applied to both concrete and steel girder bridges. The developed methodology essentially utilizes limit state performance functions, expressed in terms of capacity and flood demand, for probable failure modes of various vulnerable components of bridges. Advanced First Order Reliability Method (AFORM), Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS), and Latin Hypercube Simulation (LHS) techniques are applied for the purpose of reliability assessment and developing flood fragility curves of bridges in which flow velocity and water height are taken as flood intensity measures. Upon validating the proposed method, it is applied to a case study bridge that experiences the flood scenario of a river in Gujarat, India. Research outcome portrays how effectively and efficiently the proposed reliability-based method can be applied for a quick assessment of flood vulnerability of bridges in any flood-prone region of interest.
Remote Sensing Monitoring and Loss Estimated System of Flood Disaster based on GIS is an integrated system comprised flood disaster information receiving and collection, flood disaster simulation, and flood disaster estimation. When the system receives and collects remote sensing monitoring and conventional investigation information, the distributional features of flood disaster on space and time is obtained by means of image processing and information fusion. The economic loss of flood disaster can be classified into two pus: direct economic loss and indirect economic loss. The estimation of direct economic loss applies macroscopic economic analysis methods, i.e. applying Product (Industry and Agriculture Gross Product or Gross Domestic Product - GDP) or Unit Synthetic Economic Loss Index, direct economic loss can be estimated. Estimating indirect economic loss applies reduction coefficient methods with direct economic loss. The system can real-timely ascertains flood disaster and estimates flood Loss, so that the science basis fur decision-making of flood control and relieving disaster may be provided.

Hydrologic pattern under climate change has been paid attention to as one of the most important issues in hydrologic science group. Rainfall and runoff is a key element in the Earth's hydrological cycle, and associated with many different aspects such as water supply, flood prevention and river restoration. In this regard, a main objective of this study is to evaluate design flood using simulation techniques which can consider a full spectrum of uncertainty. Here we utilize a weather state based stochastic multivariate model as conditional probability model for simulating the rainfall field. A major premise of this study is that large scale climatic patterns are a major driver of such persistent year to year changes in rainfall probabilities. Uncertainty analysis in estimating design flood is inevitably needed to examine reliability for the estimated results. With regard to this point, this study applies a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo scheme to the NWS-PC rainfall-runoff model that has been widely used, and a case study is performed in Soyang Dam watershed in Korea. A comprehensive discussion on design flood under climate change is provided.
For performance analysis of flood prevention projects, this study performed simulation (SWMM) for the five sites where the projects have been completed. The models were constructed using watershed and sewer information of the project sites and were verified using flood records in the past to improve accuracy. In this simulation, the design rainfall data (probability 30~50 years) and the rainfall data in the summer of 2017 were applied. When the design rainfall data was applied to the models, simulation results presented that all the sites were flooded before the projects, but after the projects all the sites were not flooded due to improve discharge capacity. And when the rainfall data in the summer of 2017 was applied to the models, simulation results presented that all the sites were flooded before the projects, but after the projects any sites did not occur flooding in this summer. So if the projects had not been completed, all the sites might be flooded in the summer of 2017. These effects were analyzed as the improvement of discharge capacity due to rehabilitation of sewer, construction of underground tunnel and pumping station, etc. As the results, ratio of sewer that water depth exceed diameter reduced from 52.3~75.8% to 17.1~39.8%.
Considering the flood problem in urban areas, it is important to estimate disaster risk using accurate numerical analysis for inundation. In this study, it is carried out to calculate inundation depth in Samcheok city which suffered from serious flood damage in 2002. The urban flood model was developed by cording Manning n, elevation, and building's rare on ArcGIS for reducing error on data exchange, and applied for estimating flood damage by grid. This paper describes the extraction of sewer lines and buildings area, estimates its influence on flood inundation extent, and integrated 1D/2D flow to simulate inundation depth in high-density building area. This paper shows an integrated urban flood modeling including rainfall-runoff, inundation simulation, and mathematical flood damage estimation, and will serve drainage design for reducing its damage.
