Achieving very low phosphorus levels in treated wastewater will require the installation of additional treatment. Phosphorus removal experiments by chemical coagulation were carried out for the effluent of wastewater treatment plant in this study. TP (total phosphorus) or phosphate were highly related to the addition of PAC (poly aluminium chloride) which is one of the inorganic coagulants. But, organic polymer did not significantly affect the phosphorus removal efficiency. Polymer affected the flocculation of particle especially particle matter less than 10 micrometer so, the number of micro particles was decreased by polymer dose. Chlorination would not affect on chemical coagulation process and TP and turbidity could be effectively removed by the co-addition of PAC and polymer.

In order to simulate the actual wet-end process in papermachine, RDA, a novel handsheet former, was used and following results were obtained. While the addition of polyelectrolytes gives significant effect on fiber flocculation, increase of stock consistency influenced on the formation of RDA sheets greatly. In particular, the consistency increase from 0.3 % to 0.4% abruptly increased floe size of RDA sheet and it results in severe deterioration of paper strength. Stock consistency, therefore, should be regarded as the most important factor in the formation simulation with RDA and should be controlled as the first sequence of tuning the operating conditions of RDA to simulate correctly the target machine paper's formation.

It is of critical importance to understand the characteristics of papermaking additives and their reaction mechanisms to fully utilize the benefits they provide. Among the papermaking additives, retention aids play critical roles in improving productivity, product quality and process economy. Diverse research efforts to understand the reaction mechanisms between cationic polymers and anionic microparticles have been made since microparticle retention systems were introduced into the market. And it is most commonly accepted that flocs formed by the addition of cationic polymers are dispersed by shear force and the broken flocs are reflocculated instantly with the addition of microparticles. There are still many unanswered questions, however, on the reaction phenomena between cationic polymers and anionic microparticles. In this study, several cationic polymers including waxy maize starch, com starch and guar gum were used to investigate their retention efficiency when they were used along with anionic colloidal silica.
Because of varied functions and characteristics, water soluble polymers have lone attracted much intrest in both academic and industrial fields, especially now in pollution problems such as wastewater treatment through ployrneric flocculants. In this regard, the main objective of this study is to synthesize polymeric floccuants containning hydrophobic group in presence of the potassium persulfate/sodium thiosulfate redox system and to estimate their flocculating ability on the kaolin suspension. In order to test the flocculating power of flocculant prepared on the kaolin suspension system, turbidity of the supernatant liquid, residence time, filtration rate of flocculated samples, have additionally been measured from the flocculation experiments and analysed In comparision with the theoretical background.
The present study is developed device that effectively mixes raw water and chemicals by using the residual head of fluid in the front pipe of flocculation basin, and performed non-dimensional analysis and presented design standard to apply to water plants that have different equipment capacity. The variables for design are a proper ratio between an outer diameter of deflector and a diameter of pipe, a distance between deflector and orifice and a determination of orifice diameter for an optimal mixing. Numerical study has analyzed flow field on a basis of turbulent intensity in an orifice downstream. As Reynolds number of In-Line Orifice was increased from identical design variable, the turbulent intensity of pipe center was no changed almost.
The floc strength of Escherichia coli was enhanced by adding water soluble polymer flocculants (BPA-5020 and BPA-5000) to the particulate flocculant (BPA-1000) as indicated by the increase in the shear index. The shear index of the E. coli flocs increased from 0.39 with the particulate flocculant alone to 0.94 with the particulate flocculant in conjunction with the water soluble polymer flocculant. In addition, the sedimentation rate of flocs was higher and the sedimented volume of flocs was smaller when the particulate flocculant was used with the water soluble polymer flocculant. When E. coli was flocculated first with the water soluble flocculant and the particulate flocculant was added later into the E. coli flocs formed, the sedimentation rate of the flocs was greater than that of any other combination. The shear index of the flocs was, however, independent of the sequence of the flocculant addition.
This paper describes the numerical calculation of elastic properties of a simulated microstructure of cement paste from very early age, when most previous models fail to give accurate results. The development of elastic properties of tricalcium silicate pastes was calculated by discretising a numerical resolution-free 3D vector microstructure to a regular cubic mesh. Due to the connections formed in the microstructure as an artefact of the meshing procedure, the simulated elastic moduli were found to be higher than expected. Furthermore, the percolation of the solids was found to occur even before hydration started. A procedure to remove these artefacts, on the basis of the information available in the vector microstructures was developed. After this correction, a better agreement of the experimental results with calculations was obtained between 20% and 40% hydration. However, percolation threshold was found to be delayed significantly. More realistic estimates of percolation threshold were obtained if either flocculation or a densification of calcium silicate hydrate with hydration was assumed.
In this research, biological treatability test was conduced using seawater flocculated tannery wastewater by fixed biofilm reactor. During one cycle, the removal efficiency of organic corbon obtained with fixed biofilm process for treating tannery wastewater was considerably greater than that with activated sludge process. As the hydraulic retention time increased form 0.5day to 4day, removal efficiency of organic carbon was increased from 72% to 87.3%. Attached biomass in media increased with influent organic loading up to 29g MLSS/L, that could reduce the specific organic loading rate. The continual measurement of attached biomass was possible for the operation of the biofilm reactor. Equal and low nitrication rates were observed in both suspended growth activated sludge process and fixed biofilm process, despite commercial nitrifier was seeded. Through the process of treating the tannery wastewater, EC50 values which is measured by the use of Ceriopdaphnia dubia, were decreased to the extent of 50% after treatment of seawater flocculation and of 83% after biological treatment, respectively, compared to those of the untreated wastewater.
The kinetics of flocculation of heterodisperse suspension like those in water treatment plants and natural water system are usually described by the Smoluchowski equation, which incorporates collision frequency functions for particle collisions by Brownian motion, fluid shear, and differential sedimentation. These collisionfrequeney functions have been based on a rectilinear view of collisions, i.e., one that ignores short-range forces and changes in fluid motion as particles approach one another. In this research, a curvilinear approach, i.e., one that accounts for hydrodynamic forces and particle interaction in the collision of two different size particles is developed. Collision efficiency factors of each mechanism can be calculated by trajectory analysis (fluid shear and differential sedimentation) or the solution of diffusion equation (Brownian motion). The results are presented as a set of corrections to the rectilinear collision frequency functions for each mechanism.
