  • To perform combined tests with propellant feeding system and engine, which were developed for KSR-III launcher, vertical test stand was organized and a series of hot-fire combustion tests were carried out with engines of several injector faceplate types. In hot-fire tests in vertical installation, combustion instabilities occurred right after ignition with an engine without baffle, and such combustion instabilities did not occur at ignition add during mainstage operation for an engine with STS or composite baffle. 1.regular and temporary pressure pulsations(popping) were detected during steady operation with a baffle engine, however a development to combustion instabilities with resonant mode was highly suppressed by baffle. With a series of tests, it was confirmed that the last developed engine, which has composite baffle, was operated successfully in KSR-III flight propulsion system.

  • As the number of CFRD constructions increases, the necessity of an accurate assessment on its behavior also has been increasing accordingly. The performance of concrete faced rockfill dam (CFRD) under different water levels is greatly concerned by dam engineers and designers in the world. However, domestic research on CFRD design and construction has yet been insignificant. This study deals with three centrifuge model tests, mainly investigates the deformation of the concrete faced slabs with different face slab stiffness under different water levels. The prototype of a centrifugal model dam is half size of domestic CFRD dam. Detailed material preparation, model design, model set-up, model instrumentation and testing procedures are presented. In order to simulate the prototype concrete faced slab, three kinds of thin fiberglass plates with different thickness was adopted in the three model tests. The water level control facility was specially designed for this experiment to control the water level rise and drawdown during centrifuge flight. Although most of the results from the three model tests are satisfactory, it is also required that the centrifuge test results should be compared with those of numerical analysis and field measurements to analyze the centrifuge test results more in detail.

  • It is not uncommon to observe tilt of buildings and towers as a result of unexpected differential foundation settlements. Over the years, a number of engineering methods including the soil extraction technique have been attempted to reduce inclination of buildings and towers. In this research, a series of novel geotechnical centrifuge model tests by using a state-of-the-art in-flit robotic manipulator have been conducted to study key factors which govern the restoration of building tilts. In the centrifuge model tests, the robotic manipulator was used to drill and extract soil in-flight near an initially tilted model building. The soil extraction was to induce stress release, thereby mitigating the inclination of the model building. Insights into the effects of different configurations, soil density and sequences of drilling observed during the centrifuge model tests on the restoration of the model building are to be investigated.

  • The standard CPT(Cone Penetration Test), which can be easily performed to investigate in-situ soil engineering properties, has been widely used. CPT are also widely being utilized in centrifuge model tests. In this study, a miniature cone with 10mm diameter was developed and its applicability in the centrifuge was evaluated. The developed miniature cone was equipped with a four degree-of-freedom in-flight robot. A series of cone penetration tests was performed under four centrifuge acceleration levels. As results, the cone resistances measured at the same confining stress within shallow penetration depth were affected by the centrifugal accelerations. The critical depth was proportional to the cone diameter and relative density. Cone resistances results below the critical depth and soil parameters obtained from the laboratory tests were compared with those by previously proposed empirical relations.

  • Flush Air Data Sensing system (FADS) estimates air data states using pressure data measured at the surface of flight vehicles. The FADS system does not require intrusive probes, so it is suitable for high performance aircrafts, stealth vehicles, and hypersonic flight vehicles. In this study, calibration procedures and solution algorithms of the FADS for a sphere-cone shape vehicle are presented for the prediction of air data from subsonic to supersonic flights. Five flush pressure ports are arranged on the surface of nose section in order to measure surface pressure data. The algorithm selects the concept of separation for the prediction of flow angles and the prediction of pressure related variables, and it uses the pressure model which combines the potential flow solution for a subsonic flow with the modified Newtonian flow theory for a hypersonic flow. The CFD code which solves Euler equations is developed and used for the construction of calibration pressure data in the Mach number range of 0.5~3.0. Tests are conducted with various flight conditions for flight Mach numbers in the range of 0.6~3.0 and flow angles in the range of -10°~+10°. Air data such as angle of attack, angle of sideslip, Mach number, and freestream static pressure are predicted and their accuracies are analyzed by comparing predicted data with reference data.

  • In this paper, the contents of the design and development process of the 6U micro-satellite Snipe (SNIPE, national name Toyosat; small scale magnetospheric and Ionospheric plasma experiment ), which was developed to observe the near-global space environment through polarization flight for the first time in Korea, were described. Snipe performs transversal flight to observe the Earth's surrounding space environment in three dimensions, and aims to simultaneously observe the space plasma density and temperature in the ionosphere, as well as temporal changes in the solar magnetic field and electromagnetic waves. In this way, it was developed by dividing it into a test certification model (EQM) and a flight model (FM) to perform the actual mission for at least six months, away from developing a cube satellite for short-term space technology verification or manpower training. Currently, Snipe, which has completed the development of a total of four FM and completed all space environment tests, is scheduled to launch 2023. In this paper, we introduce the design contents and development process of the Snipe satellite body ahead of launch, and hope that it will be a useful reference for the development of 6U-class micro-satellite for full-scale mission in Korea.

  • This paper describes a study of performance prediction of an electric propulsion system for multirotor UAVs. The electric propulsion system consists of motors, propellers, batteries and speed controllers, and significantly affects performance characteristics of the platform. The performance of the electric propulsion system for multirotor UAVs was predicted using an analytical model derived from the characteristics of each component, operation experiments and statistical analyses. Ground performance tests and endurance flights were performed to verify the reliability of the proposed performance prediction method. A quadrotor platform was designed to demonstrate the parcel delivery service used in the endurance flight. From the result of verification tests, it was confirmed that the proposed method has a good agreement.

  • Although a centrifuge model test is performed with scaled models, it has a lot of advantages compared with usual scale model tests, for the reproduction of stress levels equal to a full scale test is possible. At the beginning of the Daewoo Institute of Construction Technology, a servo-motor-driven single axis actuator was introduced and has been in use with a geo-centrifuge. However, for variety of experiments and construction stage simulation, various apparatuses have been developed, such as a vacuum generator, a lateral actuator for tidal power simulation, a gravel hopper and a sand drainer for filled-up ground, and a water level controller. The apparatuses have been manufactured with enough strength and durability to be operated under specific g levels. This paper presents the properties of the apparatuses and the results of the tests performed with those.

  • Stability rating of KSR-III rocket engine is conducted based on stability rating tests in the course of development of KSR-III rocket engine. Rocket engine is approved to have combustion stabilization ability when it can suppress the external perturbation or pressure oscillation with finite amplitude and recover the original stable combustion. Rocket engine in flight nay be perturbed with unexpectedly large amplitude and thus a designer should not only assure combustion stabilization ability of the engine but also quantify the stabilization capacity. For this, several quantitative parameters and their evaluation are introduced. To verify dynamic stability of KSR-III rocket engine, five stability rating tests have been conducted. Based on these test results, such parameters are quantified and thereby, the stabilization capacity of KSR-III rocket engine is evaluated.

  • This paper deals with the static and dynamic analysis of the housing and PCB of TCU(Thruster Control Unit) for KSLV-I(Korea Space Launch Vehicle-I). TCU should pass the environment test simulating the flight environment of KSLV-I. The most important tests are the vibration and the shock tests. In this research, we proposed a design standard about the vibration and the shock environment and then verified TCU housing and PCB design met the standard. Based on the analytical results, the TCU housing was redesigned to meet the design standard. The new design is supposed to pass the environment test.
