  • FAA AC120-40B Level D flight dynamics model for T-50 Full Mission Trainer was successfully developed. Since AC120-40B Level D requires the quantitative validation tests for simulation model compared with flight test data, T-50 flight test data for each validation test item was gathered, and also automatic test environments which include AFT (Automatic Fidelity Tester) and STA (Simulation Test Analyzer) were developed. The final test results after the iterative test-tuning processes were all within the tolerances specified in AC120-40B Level D. Qualification Test Guide, QTG contains the detail test processes and results.

  • Flight modes of automatic flight control system for light general aviation flight deck. Garmin G1000, were realized using Stateflow. In developing aircraft, it is difficult to verify the operational flight program in particular branch statement because developer can not see any visual logical steam. So, Stateflow has been used to visualize logical stream, transition from one flight mode to another flight mode. The performance was approved by applying flight mode transition conditions of G1000 to proposed transition system that is composed of states, switches, events, data and transition conditions. DURMI-II was used as 6-DOF simulation model.

  • The goal of this paper is to develop an on-board controller for a model helicopter's hovering attitude control, using i8096 one-chip microcontroller. Required controller algorithm is programmed in ASM-96 assembly language and downloaded into an i8096 microcontroller. The performance of hovering flight using this system is verified by experiments with the model helicopter mounted on an instrumented flight stand where 3 potentiometers and an optical proximity sensor measure te attitude and main rotor speed of the helicopter.

  • The main purpose of this paper is cost reduction in absurd pilot positive expense and human accident prevention which is caused by in the pilot selection process. We use classification models such as logistic regression, decision tree, and neural network based on aptitude test results of 505 ROK Air Force applicants in 2001~2004. First, we determine the reliability and propriety against the aptitude test system which has been improved. Based on this conference flight simulator test item was compared to the new aptitude test item in order to make additional yes or no decision from different models in terms of classification accuracy, ROC and Response Threshold side. Decision tree was selected as the most efficient for each sequential flight training result and the last flight training results predict excellent. Therefore, we propose that the standard of pilot selection be adopted by the decision tree and it presents in the aptitude test item which is new a conference flight simulator test.

  • This paper is the second in a series and aims to build a high-fidelity mathematical model for a propeller-driven airplane using the propeller's aerodynamics and inertial models, as developed in the first paper. It focuses on aerodynamic models for the fuselage, the main wing, and the stabilizers under the influence of the wake trailed from the propeller. For this, application of the vortex lattice method is proposed to reflect the propeller's wake effect on those aerodynamic surfaces. By considering the maneuvering flight states and the flow field generated by the propeller wake, the induced velocity at any point on the aerodynamic surfaces can be computed for general flight conditions. Thus, strip theory is well suited to predict the distribution of air loads over wing components and the viscous flow effect can be duly considered using the 2D aerodynamic coefficients for the airfoils used in each wing. These approaches are implemented in building a high-fidelity mathematical model for a propeller-driven airplane. Flight dynamic analysis modules for the trim, linearization, and simulation analyses were developed using the proposed techniques. The flight test results for a series of maneuvering flights with a scaled model were used for comparison with those obtained using the flight dynamics analysis modules to validate the usefulness of the present approaches. The resulting good correlations between the two data sets demonstrate that the flight characteristics of the propeller-driven airplane can be analyzed effectively through the integrated framework with the propeller and airframe aerodynamic models proposed in this study.

  • Reconfigurable flight control using various kinds of adaptive control methods has been studied since the 1970s to enhance the survivability of aircraft in case of severe in-flight failure. Early studies were mainly focused on the failure of actuators. Recently, studies of reconfigurable flight controls that can accommodate complex damage (partial wing and tail loss) in conventional aircraft were reported. However, the partial wing loss effects on the aerodynamics of conventional type aircraft are quite different to those of BWB(blended wing body) aircraft. In this paper, a reconfigurable flight control algorithm was designed using a direct model reference adaptive method to overcome the instability caused by a complex damage of a BWB aircraft. A model reference adaptive control was incorporated into the inner loop rate control system enhancing the performance of the baseline control to cope with abrupt loss of stability. Gains of the model reference adaptive control were polled out using the Liapunov's stability theorem. Outer loop attitude autopilot was designed to manage roll and pitch of the BWB UAV as well. A 6-DOF dynamic model was built-up, where the normal flight can be made to switch to the damaged state abruptly reflecting the possible real flight situation. 22% of right wing loss as well as 25% loss for both vertical tail and rudder control surface were considered in this study. Static aerodynamic coefficients were obtained via wind tunnel test. Numerical simulations were conducted to demonstrate the performance of the reconfigurable flight control system.

  • Human and material resource planning is one representative example of Operations Research. Resource planning is important not only in civilian settings but also in military ones. In the Air Force, flight scheduling is one of the primary issues that must be addressed by the personnel who are connected to flight missions. However, although the topic is of great importance, relatively few studies have attempted to resolve the problem on a scientific basis. Each flight squadron has its own scheduling officers who manually draw up the flight schedules each day. While mistakes may not occur while drafting schedules, officers may experience difficulties in systematically adjusting to them. To increase efficiency in this context, this study proposes a mathematical model based on a binary variable. This model automatically drafts flight schedules considering pilot's mission efficiency. Furthermore, it also recommends that schedules be drawn up monthly and updated weekly, rather than being drafted from scratch each day. This will enable easier control when taking the various relevant factors into account. The model incorporates several parameters, such as matching of the main pilots and co-pilots, turn around time, availability of pilots and aircraft, monthly requirements of each flight mission, and maximum/minimum number of sorties that would be flown per week. The optimal solution to this model demonstrated an average improvement of nearly 47% compared with other feasible solutions.

  • This paper studies the feasibility of using the nonlinear model predictive control as a formation flight control algorithm for unmanned aerial vehicles. The optimal control inputs for formation flight are calculated through the cost function which incorporates the relative positions of the individual vehicles to maintain a desired formation and also the inequality constraints on inputs and states using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. In the nonlinear model predictive control setting, the optimal control inputs are implemented in a receding horizon manner, which is suitable for dealing with dynamic constraints. Numerical simulations are executed for the validation of the proposed scheme.

  • This paper presents an adaptive neural dynamic surface control (DSC) approach with $H_{\infty}$ tracking performance for a full dynamics of a nonlinear flight system. It is assumed in this paper that model uncertainties such as structured and unstrutured uncertainties and external disturbances influence the nonlinear aircraft model. In our control system, self recurrent wavelet neural networks (SRWNNs) are used to compensate model uncertainties of the nonlinear flight system, and an adaptive DSC technique is extended for disturbance attenuation of the nonlinear flight system. From Lyapunov stability theorem, it is shown that $H_{\infty}$ performance from external disturbances can be obtained. Finally, we perform the simulation for the nonlinear six-degree-of-freedom F-16 aircraft model to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control system.
