  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the flexural strengthening effects of RC beams reinforced with carbon fiber sheets (CFS) in variable of strengthening amount and anchorage length of CFS. This study can be summarized as follows. The CFS shares the tensile stress such as rebar during loading test. Also, as the strengthening amount of CFS is increased, the maximum flexural strength of RC beams reinforced with CFS is increased. Therefore, it is confirmed that the CFS's strengthening method is very effective to improve the flexural strength of RC beams. The maximum flexural strength of RC beams with CFS is determined by bond failure between CFS and concrete surface. So, the evaluation of CFS's strengthening effect can be calculated using the tensile stress of CFS which is peeling. When the anchorage length of CFS. But, in case of same anchorage length of CFS, when the strengthening amount of CFA is increased, the ductility is decreased. Therefore, it is considered that the anchorage of CFS in the end zone is necessary.

  • The object of this paper is to study the flexural strengthening effectiveness on the construction method of bonding of the FRP. The existing FRP flexural strengthening methods were divided into FRP sheet strengthening and FRP plate strengthening according to the FRP condition. For improving the existing construction method, this paper proposed the velcro type anchorage system for temporary bonding material, and flexural strengthening effects were tested. Test variables were bonding methods of the FRP strengthening materials, and total 4 specimens were tested. Following to the test results, it is shown that FRP-plate strengthening method using the velcro can get better workability than existing construction methods, and have excellent strengthening performance including flexural strength, stiffness, ductility and failure aspect.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis that can effectively predict the effect of strengthening of cracked flexural members is developed using axial deformation link elements. Concrete and interface between concrete and repair material are considered as quasi-brittle material. Reinforcing bars and reinforcing steel plates are assumed to perform as elasto-plastic materials. Unloading behavior of axial deformation link element is implemented. In the developed numerical model, a flexural member is intentionally cracked by pre-loading, then, the cracked member is repaired using extra elements, and reloaded. The results from analysis of repaired flexural members agrees well with available experiment results. Also, it was shown that the effect of strengthening and the change of failure mode with respect to the time for strengthening and thickness of repair materials. Based on the results, it was determined that the developed numerical model has a good agreement for determining failure modes and effect of strengthening in cracked flexural members. By utilizing the developed numerical analysis, the time and dimension of external strengthening in an existing cracked flexural member with predition of failure mechanism can be determined.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) infrastructures often require strengthening due to error in design, degradation of materials properties after prolong utilization and increases load carrying capacity persuaded by new use of the structures. For this purpose, a newly proposed Side Near Surface Mounted (SNSM) composite technique was used for flexural strengthening of RC beam specimens. Analytical and non-linear finite element modeling (FEM) using ABAQUS were performed to predict the flexural performance of RC specimens strengthened with S-NSM using steel bars as a strengthening reinforcement. RC beams with various SNSM reinforcement ratios were tested for flexural performance using four-point bending under monotonic loading condition. Results showed significantly increase the yield and ultimate strengths up to 140% and 144% respectively and improved failure modes. The flexural response, such as failure load, mode of failure, yield load, ultimate load, deflection, strain, cracks characteristic and ductility of the beams were compared with those predicted results. The strengthened RC beam specimens showed good agreement of predicted flexural behavior with the experimental outcomes.

  • In most cases, quantity of reinforcement is determined without regard to the difference of initial strain, and status of damages when calculated the strengthening in flexure at beams. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the flexural strengthening efficiency and behavior of RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets(CFS) considering different status of damages. in this paper, a nonlinear analysis program considering rip-off strength and residual stress of steel bars and concrete in different status of damages is developed to predict the flexural behavior of CFS strengthened beams. Rip-off strength equation is obtained by modifying moment of inertia in the Robert's equation. And conformed developed nonlinear analysis program in variable of strengthening CFS amount and status of damages(initial, case1, case2, case3) and tension reinforcement ratio(0.2~1.0%).

  • Steel-concrete composite beam with profiled steel sheet has gained its popularity in the last two decades. Due to the ageing of these structures, retrofitting in terms of flexural strength is necessary to ensure that the aged structures can carry the increased traffic load throughout their design life. The steel ribs, which presented in the profiled steel deck, limit the use of shear connectors. This leads to a poor degree of composite action between the concrete slab and steel beam compared to the solid slab situation. As a result, the shear connectors that connects the slab and beam will be subjected to higher shear stress which may also require strengthening to increase the load carrying capacity of an existing composite structure. While most of the available studies focus on the strengthening of longitudinal shear and flexural strength separately, the present work investigates the effect of both flexural and longitudinal shear strengthening of steel-concrete composite beam with composite slab in terms of failure modes, ultimate load carrying capacity, ductility, end-slip, strain profile and interface differential strain. The flexural strengthening was conducted using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) or steel plate on the soffit of the steel I-beam, while longitudinal shear capacity was enhanced using post-installed high strength bolts. Moreover, a combination of both the longitudinal shear and flexural strengthening techniques was also implemented (hybrid strengthening). It is concluded that hybrid strengthening improved the ultimate load carrying capacity and reduce slip and interface differential strain that lead to improved composite action. However, hybrid strengthening resulted in brittle failure mode that decreased ductility of the beam.

  • Since improved capacity for RC bridges has been required due to deterioration or increase in traffic, the deflection of cracked reinforced concrete slabs need to be reconsidered. Strengthening is known as the better way to improve capacity of bridges than reconstructing. In this paper, Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) was introduced as one of the best strengthening methods for civil structures. The structures strengthened with FRPs can improve the strengthening capacity and serviceability. Therefore, CFRP sheet and Glass Fiber-Steel Composite Plate (GSP) in this research were used for strengthening slabs of RC bridges. Experimental data from the strengthening will be helpful to better understand the effect of the strengthening and effective flexural rigidity.

  • This paper performs an experimental study on the flexural behavior of preloaded reinforced self-compacted concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers CFRP. A group of six preloaded strengthened beams was investigated along with one unstrengthened beam used as a reference beam RB. All beams have the same dimensions and reinforcement details: three beams are strengthened with CFRP laminates against flexural failure and three beams are strengthened with CFRP sheets. For simulating actual conditions, the beams are loaded before strengthening. Then, after strengthening, the beams are tested for flexural strength using 4-point loads where cracked and ultimate load and failure mode, along with load-deflection relation are recorded. To study the different configurations of strengthening, one layer, two layers, and U-wrap formation of laminates and sheets are considered. The results show that strengthing the RC beams using CFRP is an effective method to increase the beam's capacity by 47% up to 153% where deflection is reduced by 5%-80%. So, the beams strengthened with CFRP laminates have higher load capacity and lower ductility in comparison with the beams strengthened with CFRP sheets.

  • Flexural tests on 3.0m reinfored concrete beams with epoxy and anchor bolt bonded CFRF-Grid reported in these tests. The selected experimental variables are concrete compressive strength, strengthening length and strengthening method. The effects of these variables in overall behavior are discussed. The results generally shown that the main flexural mode of strengthened beams is separation failure. The strengthening of the chipping by the tensile bar is really necessary in order to prevent CFRP-Grid from rip-off failure.
