  • The use of spliced reinforcing bars in sustainable concrete members to manage inadequate bars length is a common practical issue which is may be due to some limitations. The lap splicing means two bars overlapped in parallel with specified length called the splice length in order to provide the required bond between the two bars. The bond between sustainable concrete and spliced steel bars is another important issue. The normal strength sustainable concrete specimens of sizes 1700×150×150 mm with tension reinforcement lap spliced were selected according to testing device length limitations. These members were designed to fail in flexure in order to investigate the lap spliced tension bars effect. The selected lap spliced tension bars were of 10 mm size with smooth and deformed surfaces in order to investigate the surface nature accompanied with the splice nature. The sustainable concrete mechanical properties and mix workability were also studied. This study reveals that the effect of number of spliced bars on the response of beams reinforced with smooth bars is found to be more obvious than deformed one. Finite element modeling in three dimensions was carried out for the tested beams using ABAQUS software. A parametric study is carried out using finite elements on considering the following parameters, concrete compressive strength, load type and opening in cross section (hollow section) for weight reduction purposes. The laboratory and numerical results show good agreements in terms of ultimate load and deflection with an average difference of 10% and 15% in ultimate load and deflection respectively.

  • Nanocelluloses, mainly cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC, i.e., defect-free, rod-like crystalline residues after acid hydrolysis of fibers), have been the subject of recent interest. Due to the presence of hydroxyl groups on the surface of nanocelluloses, their surfaces are reactive, making them suitable candidates for reinforcing materials for manufacturing polymer composites. In this study, CNF was used as a reinforcing material for manufacturing cement composites. CNF was prepared by TEMPO (2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl piperidine-1-oxyl radical) oxidation procedure combined with extensive homogenization and ultrasonication. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the suspension showed the width of CNF between 10 and 15 nm. The compressive strength of cement composites containing 0.5% CNF was comparable to that of conventional cement composites. On the other hand, the tensile and flexural strength were improved by 49.7% and 38.8%, respectively, compared to those of conventional cement composites. Also, at an ambient condition, the degree of self-shrinkage reduction reached to 18.9% in one day, followed by 5.9% in 28 days after molding.

  • To determine the effect of chemical structure of aromatic amino curing agents on thermal and mechanical properties, standard epoxy resin DGEBF (diglycidylether of bisphenol F) was cured with diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) and diaminodiphenyl sulphone (DDS) in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio. From this work the effect of aromatic amino curing agents on the thermal and mechanical properties is significantly influenced by the chemical structure of curing agents. In contrast, the results show that the DGEBF/DDS system having the sulfone structure between the benzene rings had higher values in the thermal stability, density, shrinkage ($\%$), thermal expansion coefficient, tensile modulus and strength, flexural modulus and strength than the DGEBF/DDM system having methylene structure between the benzene rings, whereas the DGEBF/DDS system presented low values in maximum exothermic temperature, conversion of epoxide, and grass transition temperature. These results are caused by the relative effects of sulfone group having strong electronegativity and methylene group having (+) repulsive property. The result of fractography shows that the grain distribution of DGEBF/DDS system is more irregular than that of the DGEBF/DDM system.

  • The aluminum honeycomb sandwich panel (AHSP) structure not only have high flexural rigidity and strength per density but also excellence in vibration and noise properties. The AHSP structure are very useful for railway, airplane and high speed ship which need lighter-weighted and more strengthened elements. In this paper, from comparison the AHSP with the equivalent aluminum single plate (EASP) structure on the result of analysis, it was shown that the AHSP is S times lighter weight to the same stiffness than the EASP. And the AHSP structure have high bending rigidity and small shear rigidity in the direction of the thickness. Also, to the characteristics of vibration for the AHSP and EASP, which the stiffness is larger than the EASP, are higher than EASP.

  • $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ composites were fabricated by pressureless sintering from commercial powders and/or nano composite powder of $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$. The Properties of the composites such as density, strength, hardness and fracture toughness were evaluated. Microstructures and fracture surfaces ware also examined. The flexural strength remains unchanged(~640 MPa) as long as the content of commercial powders is not extreamly high, and depends on microstructures of the composites. Fracture toughness(4.3-5.3 $Mpa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$) increases with increasing content of commercial powders. Fractography shows that failure-initiating sources are 1)surface flaws resulting from machining damage, 2)crack-shaped voids formed due to $ZrO_2$ agglomeration, and 3)surface separation caused by inhomogeneous blending and by sinterability difference between nato composite powder and commercial powders of $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$. Failure mode of the composites was mainly transgranular.

  • Polymer modified cement mortar (PCM) can improve the performance of adhesion strength, flexural strength, chemical resistance, etc., compared with cement mortar, and is widely used when repairing RC structures. However, PCM causes a burst in an environment with high temperature and fire rate, which causes problems in the stability of the structure. In this study, for the purpose of developing explosive reduction PCM, the polymer mixing ratio is 2%, 4%, 6%, the fiber length is 6mm, 12mm, 6+12mm, and the PP fiber mixing rate is 0.05 Vol% and 0.1 Vol%. Furnace heating experiment (600℃, 800℃) was carried out. As a result of comparative analysis of the explosive properties, it was confirmed that the explosive reduction effect due to the fiber incorporation was insufficient when the polymer mixing amount was 6% or more.

  • Hollow slab is a floor system which reduces the load of vertical structural members and earthquake load by decreasing self-weight of slab. Although hollow slab can reduce self-weight of slab remarkably, flexural strength and shear strength reduce due to the hollow section inside the slab, so it is very important to predict structural behavior. In spite of plenty of domestic and foreign studies on hollow slab, there is a shortage of research on shear performance according to shear reinforcement of one-way hollow slab. Therefore, this study aims to verify the need for shear reinforcement of one-way hollow slab by analyzing failure modes of one-way hollow slab depending on the state of shear reinforcement and comparing shear strengths of estimation formula and experimental value with one another.

  • This study has attempted to suggest a proper reinforcement method by strengthening unbonded post -tensioning through height of an anchorage hole, form of a saddle, and loading time point as parameters and evaluating the reinforcement method through a bending experiment. The result of this experiment indicated effects of reinforcement since the maximum strength ratio(the ratio of an experimental value to theoretical value) of SC composite beams before prestressed was 0.97 and after prestress were 1.00~1.21. As a result of analysis on displacement and strain, irrespective of height of an anchorage hole and loading time point, the D120-series specimen where an anchorage hole was installed on the neutral axis after reinforcement showed that its deflection continuously increased without sudden load reduction after maximum load and it stably behaved with relatively low strain of each part. In terms of reinforcement effects, the maximum strength of SCR-UD120 specimen prestressed after pre-loading was increased 1.72 times comparing to SC composite beams so SCR-UD120 specimen prestressed after pre-loading was shown to be the best.

  • In steel frame-tube structures (SFTSs) the application of flexural beam is not suitable for the beam with span-to-depth ratio lower than five because the plastic hinges at beam-ends can not be developed properly. This can lead to lower ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the SFTS. To address this problem, a replaceable shear link, acting as a ductile fuse at the mid length of deep beams, is proposed. SFTS with replaceable shear links (SFTS-RSLs) dissipate seismic energy through shear deformation of the link. In order to evaluate this proposal, buildings were designed to compare the seismic performance of SFTS-RSLs and SFTSs. Several sub-structures were selected from the design buildings and finite element models (FEMs) were established to study their hysteretic behavior. Static pushover and dynamic analyses were undertaken in comparing seismic performance of the FEMs for each building. The results indicated that the SFTS-RSL and SFTS had similar initial lateral stiffness. Compared with SFTS, SFTS-RSL had lower yield strength and maximum strength, but higher ductility and energy dissipation capacity. During earthquakes, SFTS-RSL had lower interstory drift, maximum base shear force and story shear force compared with the SFTS. Placing a shear link at the beam mid-span did not increase shear lag effects for the structure. The SFTS-RSL concentrates plasticity on the shear link. Other structural components remain elastic during seismic loading. It is expected that the SFTS-RSL will be a reliable dual resistant system. It offers the benefit of being able to repair the structure by replacing damaged shear links after earthquakes.

  • Slab panels are very important to develop asphalt concrete (AC) track for minimizing the roadbed stress due to the train load and reducing the plastic deformation of infrared-sensitive AC. In this study, the slab panel for AC track was developed through the shape design and the indoor performance test and its structural integrity has been investigated through the finite element analysis under the flexural tensile stress and the design moment according to various static load combination by KRL-2012 standard train load model and KR-C code. In order to verify the suitability of the slab panel for AC track, static bending strength test and dynamic bending strength test were performed according to EN 13230-2. Results show that the slab panel for AC track satisfies all the performance standards required by European standards such as crack loads and crack extension.
