This study is based on the use and performance of bamboo reinforcements in construction of low-cost structures. This study investigated the physical and mechanical properties of bamboo reinforcements. Bamboo reinforced concrete beam specimens were tested with different reinforcement ratios and observed the load capacity, deflection and failure patterns. It was observed that, flexural strength of bamboo reinforced column is sufficient higher than plain cement concrete and comparable to steel reinforced concrete beams. Bamboo reinforced concrete columns with different reinforcement ratio also tested and observed the ultimate compressive strength and failure pattern. It found, all columns failed in a similar pattern due to crushing of concrete. According to cost analysis, bamboo reinforced beams and columns with moderate reinforcement ratio showed the best strength-cost ratio among plain cement concrete and steel reinforced concrete.

This paper presents the appropriateness for using high strength reinforcement according to the use of high strength concrete. Nine flexural tests were conducted on full-scale beam specimens according to the concrete strength, reinforcement strength and reinforcement ratio as main variable. The structural behavior was analyzed due to the flexural strength, stress-strain curve, deflections at yielding and fracture point, crack appearance and ductility factor. The member with high-strength reinforcements showed large deflection at yielding point and this was analyzed as a main cause to decrease the ductility factor. Structural behavior after yielding point, however, showed similarity to behavior of members with normal strength reinforcements of same stiffness. It was found that in the case of using reinforcements of $5500kgf/cm^2$ strength, the combination with concrete of $800kgf/cm^2$ strength demonstrated the great appropriateness which can increase the flexural capacity without any reduction of maximum reinforcement ratio.
The two major widely used building design code documents of reinforced concrete structures are the ACI 318-05 and Eurocode for the Design of Concrete Structures EC2. Therefore, a thorough comparative analysis of the provisions of these codes is required to confirm their validity and identify discrepancies in either code. In this context, provisions of flexural computations would be particularly attractive for detailed comparison. The provisions of safety concepts, design assumptions, cross-sectional moment capacity, ductility, minimum and maximum reinforcement ratios, and load safety factors of both the ACI 318-05 and EC2 is conducted with parametric analysis. In order to conduct the comparison successfully, the parameters and procedures of EC2 were reformatted and defined in terms of those of ACI 318-05. This paper concluded that although the adopted rationale and methodology of computing the design strength is significantly different between the two codes, the overall EC2 flexural provisions are slightly more conservative with a little of practical difference than those of ACI 318-05. In addition, for the limit of maximum reinforcement ratio, EC2 assures higher sectional ductility than ACI 318-05. Overall, EC2 provisions provide a higher safety factor than those of ACI 318-05 for low values of Live/Dead load ratios. As the ratio increases the difference between the two codes decreases and becomes almost negligible for ratios higher than 4.

This paper presents flexural test results of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP and conventional steel reinforcement for comparison. The beams were tested under static loading to investigate the effects of reinforcement ratio and compressive ,strength of concrete on cracking, deflection, ultimate capacity and mode of failure, This study attempts to establish a theoretical basis for the development of simple and rational design guideline. Test results show that ultimate capacity increases as the reinforcement ratio and concrete strength increase. The ultimate capacity increased up to $8\%-25\%$ by using high strength concrete. The deflection at maximum load of GFRP reinforced beams was about three times that of steel reinforced beams. For GFRP-reinforced beams, the ACI code 440 design method resulted in conservative flexural strength -estimates.
This paper describes the numerical modelling of an interior slab-column connection to investigate the punching shear resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) slabs under fire conditions. Parameters of the study were the fire direction, flexural reinforcement ratio, load levels, shear reinforcement and compressive strength of concrete. Moreover, the efficiency of the insulating material, gypsum, in reducing the heat transferred to the slab was assessed. Validation studies were conducted comparing the simulation results to experiments from the literature and common codes of practice. Temperature dependencies of both concrete and reinforcing steel bars were considered in thermo-mechanical analyses. Results showed that there is a slight difference in temperature endurance of various models with respect to concrete with different compressive strengths. It was also concluded that compared to a slab without gypsum, 10-mm and 20-mm thick gypsum reduce the maximum heat transferred to the slab by 45.8% and 70%, respectively. Finally, it was observed that increasing the flexural reinforcement ratio changes the failure mode from flexural punching to brittle punching in most cases.
The reinforced high-strength-concrete beam subjected to flexure moment behaves more brittly than the moderate-strength-concrete beam reinforced with equal reinforcement ratio($\rho$/$\rho_b$). Test results show that when the concrete strength exceeds 830kg/$cm^2$, the maximum reinforcement ratio should be less than $0.6{\rho}_b$ for ductile behavior (${\rho}_b$=balanced steel ratio). The ratio of flexural strength between experimental results and analytical results with rectangular stress block decrease as the compressive strength of concrete increase. The shape of the compressive stress block distributed triangularly. because the ascending part of the stress-strain curve shows fairly linear response up to maximum stress in contrast to the nonlinear behavior of the medium and low strength specimens.

This paper describes the specifications on balanced steel ratio and maximum reinforcement for the design of RC flexural members by the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code based on limit states design. The Korean Highway Bridge Design Code (Limit States Design) is not provide for the balanced steel ratio specification for the calculation of required steel area of RC flexural members design. The maximum steel area limited the depth of the neutral axis at the ultimate limit states after redistribution of the moment, and also recommended the maximum steel area should not exceed 4 percent of the cross sectional area. However, from the maximum neutral axis depth provisions should increase the cross section is calculated to be less the maximum reinforcement area, and according to the 4% of the cross sectional area of the concrete, the tensile strain of the reinforcement is calculated to be greater than double the yielding strain, so can not guarantee a ductile behavior. This study developed a balanced reinforcement ratio that is basis for the required reinforcement calculation for tension-controlled RC flexural members design in the ultimate limit states verification provisons and material properties and applied the ultimate strain of the concrete compressive strength with a simple formular to be applied to design practice induced. And assumed the minimum allowable tensile strain of reinforcement double the yielding strain, and applying correction coefficient up to the ratio of maximum neutral axis depth, proposed maximum steel ratio that can be applied irrespective of the reinforcement yield strength and concrete compressive strength.
In the design of reinforced concrete beams, it is a standard practice to use the yield stress of the steel reinforcement for the evaluation of the flexural strength. However, because of strain hardening, the tensile strength of the steel reinforcement is often substantially higher than the yield stress. Thus, it is a common belief that the actual flexural strength should be higher than the theoretical flexural strength evaluated with strain hardening ignored. The possible increase in flexural strength due to strain hardening is a two-edge sword. In some cases, it may be treated as strength reserve contributing to extra safety. In other cases, it could lead to greater shear demand causing brittle shear failure of the beam or unexpected greater capacity of the beam causing violation of the strong column-weak beam design philosophy. Strain hardening may also have certain effect on the flexural ductility. In this paper, the effects of strain hardening on the post-peak flexural behaviour, particularly the flexural strength and ductility, of reinforced normal- and high-strength concrete beams are studied. The results reveal that the effects of strain hardening could be quite significant when the tension steel ratio is relatively small.

This paper presents the results of flexural test of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP and conventional steel reinforcement for comparison. The beams were tested under a static load to examine the effects of the reinforcement ratio and compressive strength of concrete on cracking, deflection, ultimate capacity, and modes of failure. The test results showed that the ultimate capacity of the GFRP-reinforced beams increased with increasing reinforcement ratio and concrete strength, showing a 41.3~51.6% increase compared to steel reinforced beams. The deflections at maximum loads of the GFRP reinforced beams were 4.1~6.3 times higher that of steel reinforced beams. The measured deflections of GFRP reinforced beams decreased approximately 31% compared to the theoretical predictions because the theoretical flexural stiffness was underestimated at the maximum loads. For the GFRP-reinforced beams, the ACI code 440 design method resulted in conservative flexural strength estimates.

Although many structures. with high strength concrete have been recently constructed, the flexural behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams with high strength concrete is not exactly defined. This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural strength of the high strength concrete beams. Five large scale beams simply supported were tested and measured. Each beam was loaded by two symmetrical concentrated loads applied at 1.25m from the center of span. The concrete strength, the prestressed force and longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio vary from beam to beam. From the experimental tests, the flexural strength from tests is larger than the nominal flexural strength of codes. Moreover, the initial crack-load is affected by the prestressed force and the crack width and spacing are controlled by the longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio.
