  • In vitro studies are essential to predict the clinical performance of ceramic widely used as restorative materials. Traditional experiments such as fracture toughness and flexural strength have been used to evaluate the properties of brittle ceramics. However, these experiments have a limitation that the load conditions, failure patterns, and load values at which failure occurs are not similar to human occlusal force ranges or clinical failures. On the other hand, the edge chipping test (ECT), which was recently introduced to study chipping fracture of ceramics, has similar failure patterns to clinical trials. In addition, the failure loads from ECT were similar to human occlusal force. ECT can be usefully used in the study of ceramic properties. In this literature review, a more clinically meaningful experimental study of ceramics by examining the meaning and limitations of traditional ceramic failure tests and comparing them with ECT.

  • In this study, standoff detonation tests and static beam tests on $160{\times}290{\times}2200mm$ RC beams were conducted to investigate the effect of local damage on the flexural strength and ductility index. And also, blast resistance of RC beams strengthened with steel fiber and FRP sheet were evaluated by these tests. The standoff detonation tests were performed with charge weight of 1kg and standoff distance of 0.1m. After the tests, crater diameters and loss weights of specimens were measured to evaluate the local damage of specimens. Flexural strength and ductility index were measured by conducting the static beam tests on the damaged and undamaged specimens. As a test results, normal concrete specimen(NC) showed relatively large crater and spall diameters that caused weight loss of 23.5kg as a local damage. Whereas, steel fiber reinforced concrete specimen(SFRC) and FRP sheet retrofitted specimens(NC-F, NC-FS) showed higher blast resistance than NC by reducing crater size and weight loss. Flexural strength and ductility index were decreased in case of local damaged specimens by detonation. Especially, large decrease of flexural strength was shown in NC as compared with intact specimen and brittle failure was occurred due to buckling of compressive reinforcement. In case of specimens strengthened with steel fiber and FRP sheet, residual flexural strength and ductility index were increased as compared with NC. In these results, it is concluded that critical local damage can be occurred unless enough standoff distance can be assured even if the charge weight is small. and it is verified that strengthening method using steel fiber and FRP sheet can increase blast resistance.

  • Welded joints and mechanical joints using bolt connection have been used as a pile-to-pile connecting method for PHC piles. These PHC pile joint methods may have difficulty in securing connecting quality and connecting performance in PHC pile joining process. Therefore, this study proposes a non-welded connection plate type mechanical PHC pile joint to improve the disadvantages of existing PHC pile connection methods and to secure the connection performance of PHC pile joint. Its connection performance was evaluated from nonlinear FE analysis and loading tests for actual PHC piles with suggested pile joints. From nonlinear FE analysis for the proposed PHC pile joint, it was evaluated to have sufficient connection performance under flexural, compressive, tensile, shear, and eccentric compressive load condition. PHC piles connected by the suggested connection plate type mechanical PHC pile joint show that they show stable linear behaviors for the crack moment and the flexural moment level of the PHC pile. Therefore, the proposed a non-welded connection plate type mechanical PHC pile joint can secure sufficient connection performance in PHC pile.

  • The CFT (Concrete Filled steel Tubes) column-footing connection is cast-in-place embedded type which provides simple construction procedure, low cost, and superior structural performance. In this study, CFT column-footing connection of modular pier is proposed and structural performance is evaluated by experimental tests. To evaluate structural performance of the CFT column-footing connection, a series of experimental tests were performed for the 4 specimens with different embedded depth. As a result of the quasi-static test, the specimen with 0.6D (0.6 times the outside diameter of steel tube) embedded depth showed relatively low ductility than other specimens with larger embedded depth due to cone failure of base concrete occurred during the lower loading step. On the contrary, cone failure of the base concrete was not observed in the specimens with larger embedded depth than 0.9D, but typical flexural failure in lower part of CFT column was observed. With the analyses of force-displacement curve, displacement ductility, and energy dissipation capacity, it is concluded that the rational range of embedded depth of the CFT column-footing connection is from 0.9D to 1.2D in view of good seismic performance.

  • Recently, the level of fine dust and ultrafine dust has reached its highest level, threatening the public's health. If the air purifier was not operated indoors, natural ventilation would not be possible. In this study, photocatalyst is applied to building materials to purify air in a passive manner. In order to use photocatalyst for LEFC(Light Emotion Friendly Concrete), it is necessary to secure self-consolidating capability. Therefore, self-consolidating performance was evaluated by slump test, J-ring test and L-box test with UHPC materials applied. Based on these results, the mixture proportion was determined, and the mechanical performance was evaluated by compressive and flexural tests. Concrete blocks were constructed with a fabrication method that improved the existing process of making LEFC. Also, the concrete block was emptied as a way to reduce the use of expensive photocatalyst. Finally, in order to identify the distribution of TiO2, an EDS analysis was performed.

  • Types of noise barrier installed for noise attenuation are largely divided into noise-absorbing format and noise-proofing format. In these days, installation of transparent noise barrier is general trend to solve problems that hinder sunshine and landscape. Some kinds of transparent boards are used to one of components in noise barriers, but in some cases, less transparency and worse pollution due to yellowing phenomena, and severe material deformation are to harm the urban aesthetics Therefore laminated-tempered glass board in that yellowing phenomena does not occur can be replaced as a transparent one to secure those shortcomings. In this paper, the structural safety against train induced vibration and the resistibility to wind load are analyzed for laminated-tempered glass system as a component of noise barrier installed on Metro railway elevated bridges. Also the appropriateness is evaluated through flexural bending performance test, compressive strength test, modulus of elasticity tests, and impact test for the system or the glass material itself. All of these processes are intended to present the deployment of logic to evaluate the adequacy for the system.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the flexure-shear behavior of bridge columns under seismic loads. Four full scale circular reinforced concrete columns were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. The selected test variables are aspect ratio(1.825, 2.5, 4.0), transverse steel configuration, and longitudinal steel ratio. Volumetric ratio of transverse hoop of all the columns is 0.0023 in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to $24\%$ of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by limited ductility concept. The columns showed flexural failure or flexure-shear failure depending on the test variables. Failure behavior and seismic performance are investigated and discussed in this paper.

  • Ultra High Performance Concrete(UHPC) is a superior structural material with high strength and durability. Construction of light and slim structures is realized to apply this expectable new materials in practice. This research is a part of the project to develop UHPC precast deck system for hybrid cable stayed bridge. The main object of this study is to investigate behavior of the lap-spliced reinforced connection in UHPC. The major parameter considered in experimental plan was lap-spliced length. The 4-points bending test for 12 specimens were conducted to verify the effect of considered parameters. Test results show that the minimum value of lap spliced length of 300mm which specified in current korea high bridge design code was very conservative for UHPC precast deck system.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the improvement effect of adhesion in tension and flexure of polymer cement mortars that have widely used as a repair-reinforcement material in construction field according to adding of polymer dispersions depending on different three types test methods. From the test results, the adhesion performance is improved with a raise in polymer-cement ratio irrespective of the type of polymer. The maximums of A type adhesion in tension, B type adhesion in tension and adhesion in flexure show 1.90 times, 2.17 times and 1.83 times, respectively that of plain cement mortar. The relative strength ratios, B type adhesion in tension and adhesion in flexure of polymer cement mortars to tensile and flexural strengths of plain mortar respectively are in ranges of 50.1% to 101.7% and 73.8% to 132.9% compared to 46.9% of plain mortar. It is apparent that polymer cement mortars with EVA and polymer cement ratios of 10% to 15% are recommended considering its adhesion performance and cost as a repair-reinforcement material in construction field.

  • Cracks in concrete structures are inevitable phenomena caused by shrinkage, hydration heat, and external loads. These cracks facilitate the penetration of external harmful ions into the concrete, which greatly reduces its durability. Recently, self-healing concrete has been actively studied. Also, self-healing fiber-reinforced concrete have been studied to control the crack in concrete and to maximize the shelf-healing capability. In this study, mortar specimens containing PVA fiber, fly ash and crystalline admixture were fabricated. The compressive and flexural strength were evaluated. Also, the self-healing performance was evaluated by the absorption test. From the results, it was confirmed that the amount of water absorbed by healing of the crack decreased as time increased. It was also found that PVA fiber is beneficial for the production of calcium carbonate, an additional healing product.
